 | Jenny Baker 2012-2013 DP/PC Chapter President |
Happy New Year! Is it really 2013? We have a lot of things planned for our engaged professionals, evolving leaders this year so be sure to jump on board when you hear of one of our fun and exciting upcoming events/programs.
One upcoming event is our local image awards. As public relations practitioners we have a chance to showcase all the hard-working efforts we have accomplished for our organization during 2012. Start compiling those projects now as we have a workshop planned for January 23 from 5:30 - 7:00 pm at Danny Kushmer's office in Bartow. If you would like additional information on the local image awards, please contact our image awards chair, Marybeth Soderstrom at marybeth_soderstrom@polkworks.org.
Also, our upcoming "Media Spring Training" event is set for March 19, and will be held at the Lake Myrtle Complex, located in Auburndale. Mark your calendars and contact Rosa Driggs (rosadriggs@polkfl.com,) our fundraising chair, if you would like to help with the planning process of this educational event.
Congrats DP/PC FPRA Chapter for having a 94 percent membership renewal! Our annual renewal goal was set at 80 percent and we exceeded it. I would like to thank Pamela Crain, our membership chair for her committed efforts; and to each and every one of you who realized the value of your FPRA membership and got your renewal in on time.
Our next monthly meeting will be on Wednesday, January 16 with Chrissanne Long, speaking on "The Social Media Mindset - Tapping into WHY it Matters." She is a Media & Marketing Consultant and Partner of Marketing Blueprint Solutions. I hope to see you all there. Please RSVP to Amy Wiggins (awiggins@LakelandChamber.com) by Monday, January 14 at 5 pm so we have enough seating for everyone.
I would like to thank ServiceMaster of Polk County for sponsoring our January luncheon. Don't forget, if you know someone or if your company would like to sponsor one of our monthly meetings, please call our fundraising chair, Rosa Driggs at 863-701-5247. Again, thank you to ServiceMaster of Polk County.

| December Meeting Recap |
On Wednesday, December 19, Roy Reid, APR, CPRC, partner at Consensus Communications, joined the DP/PC FPRA Chapter, offering great insight on crisis communications and how to "deal with an angry public." During the discussion, Reid said trust is the lynchpin of any good and lasting relationship between your organization and an outside party. When you encounter an angry customer, or even a crisis, Reid said training team members before it happens is crucial to your company's reputation. Reid presented these points to consider:
1) Have a plan and work your plan. Update it every year and practice it.
2) Realize that you can't necessarily manage the crisis, only the message.
3) Remember that people are looking for victims and a villain.
4) Communicate from the inside out. Remember that your employees are your ambassadors.
5) Assess the conversations that will take place across all media platforms for potential impact.
6) Stay on message.
As a result of Reid's presentation, attendees noted how relevant this topic was to their role in public relations and that his advice would be put to good use! |
| Happy 43rd Anniversary to the Dick Pope/Polk County Chapter |
The Dick Pope/Polk County Chapter of FPRA will celebrate its 43th anniversary on January 19. The chapter's namesake, the late Dick Pope, Sr., decided in 1970 that Polk County needed a PR professional organization such as FPRA. He formed a group of professional PR colleagues that met regularly and as a result, hundreds of PR professionals have benefited from networking, accreditation, professional development programs and much more over the past 43 years.

Carillon Classic 5k Run & Walk - Call for Committee Members
|
On Saturday, May 25, the DP/PC FPRA Chapter will, once again, partner with Bok Tower Gardens and the George W. Harris Jr. Youth Runaway and Crisis Shelter, to host the 2nd Annual Carillon Classic Run & Walk. This will be Memorial Day Weekend, so please mark your calendars to volunteer. Proceeds will benefit the shelter, along with our chapter's networking and educational initiatives. We need a fantastic volunteer showing from our membership, and I guarantee you will have fun and feel satisfied knowing you are making a difference!
Katy Martin and Marybeth Soderstrom have teamed up to co-chair the 5k. We have already begun planning and will hold our first committee meeting on Friday, January 18 at 1 p.m. at Bok Tower Gardens in Lake Wales. Subsequent meetings will be held in Lakeland. At our first committee meeting, we will talk about what we need to do in the areas of:
- Sponsorships
- Fine-tuning the course
- PR & Marketing
- Event planning
Also, we need creative minds to come up with an additional fund-raising element to add to the event this year. If you are interested in serving on this committee, please email katy.martin@LRMC.com.

Five Tips on Preparing FPRA Image Award Entries
|
1. Read the directions. Make sure to address all five elements of the summary: Research, Objectives, Implementation, Evaluation and Budget. Don't try to fake any of them. You must provide valid information on each element.
2. Track projects throughout the year, not just at awards time. Keep a file for notes, surveys and documentation. It will make compilation that much easier.
- Evaluate every project as a potential entry.
- Keep good records.
- Record your objectives.
- Set quantifiable goals.
- Organize your support materials. Include survey results, proof of research, before and after samples, media clips, letters of appreciation, pertinent reference material. Get audio and video files of all radio and television publicity.
3. Plan ahead to conduct research and document results. It will strengthen your work. Manage by fact. Measure your results.
4. Put the most work into the summary, not just the notebook. It is 70% of your total score. Be clear, concise and factual, not just creative.
5. Review the checklist provided in the Call for Entries. Be sure all criteria are met.
- Some part of the entry took place within the specified time frame.
- Entry is contained in a standard hardcover, stiff-spin, three-ring binder no larger than 3" thick.
- Original or photocopied entry form is the first page of the entry.
- Summary is a Word document no longer than two pages. Pages have a 1" margin and type is double-spaced. Font used is Times New Roman, no smaller than 10 point.
- Three copies of the summary are included, in addition to the original.
- A brief organizational overview immediately follows the two-page summary.
- All support materials and AV and electronic requirements are met.
- All support materials are labeled with proper identification, division and category.
- 50-word summary is included.
- Name(s) to be used on the award are specified and properly spelled.
- Check payment and duplicates of entry form (if check is used for more than one entry) are attached.
- CD containing the two-page summary, 50-word summary and digital image is labeled, placed in an envelope and attached to the 50-word summary.
