Book Sort Success
Thousands of books. Two days. One great team!
On September 5th and 6th, Raising A Reader volunteers, Board members, and staff gathered together in Oakland's Caltrans warehouse to pack red bags for over 14,000 Bay Area children. This is RAR's biggest volunteer event of the year, bringing together individual volunteers, as well as volunteers representing the Masons of California, Wells Fargo, Chevron, Oracle, and Caltrans.
Two days of hard work ensured that children in the Raising A Reader program received all the materials and books they need to enjoy the book bag rotation program that helps families throughout the Bay Area establish family book sharing routines.
Thank you to all the volunteers - we couldn't have done it without you!

...A Letter from Shani Ahearn

My name is Shani Ahearn and, as the new Director of Development & Communications at Raising A Reader, I want to thank you for all that you do to make this work possible. I have seen the power of Raising A Reader first-hand - both of my children were in the program and we cherished that moment every week when we opened our Red Bag to see what books awaited us inside. Your support is accomplishing amazing things!
We are working on a few ideas for ways to better connect you to your tremendous impact, so stay tuned for updates on that front (and reach out if you have suggestions!). In the meantime, you'll be seeing and hearing from me, and you should always feel free to call me if you would like more information about our work and how your gifts of time and financial support are bringing learning, love, and laughter to more than 14,000 children and families across the Bay Area. Thank you for your compassion and commitment to building early literacy through family engagement!
Best, Shani

Higher! Higher!
by Leslie Patricelli
"This book is so much fun! Tells the story of a girl who's dad pushes her higher and higher on a swing. Children get so excited about where she is going next. My favorite part is when the girl encounters a plane. I usually ask where is the plane going, and by the answers, I can tell where their family is from: Mexico, China, New Jersey, Los Angeles... This books is great for exercising prediction skills. It is also great for talking about space, rockets, and planets."

"When reading this book, notice how it may be adapted to the child's age. You can talk about shapes, numbers, and introduce new vocabulary words with this book. The story is a little complex, but it's beautiful. It talks about being able to stand up for yourself and others. It belongs to our list of recommended books for building social-emotional awareness, and is such a pleasure to read!"
