Get ready for another great year with
Raising A Reader!
AUGUST 2014
Back to School season is upon us! This is an exciting time for parents, students, teachers, and Raising A Reader staff.

This summer has been one of our best yet. In addition to gaining new Board members, we have also brought on several new staff members to help us continue to implement the Red Bag book rotation program, as well as ensure that Raising A Reader brings you more of the parent workshops, educator workshops, and community events that have come to define the scope of our work.

To prepare for the upcoming program year, we're hosting our annual Book Sort event on September 5-6th.  If you'd like to help us sort and pack thousands of books that will be circulated to children throughout the Bay Area, please be sure to contact Julie Barton for more information. We hope to see you there!

Happy Reading!

Talk, Read, Sing Campaign Launch
at Children's Fairyland, Oakland
Raising A Reader teamed up with Too Small to Fail, the Kenneth Rainin Foundation, First 5 California, and several other Bay Area organizations to launch the "Talking is Teaching: Talk, Read, Sing" campaign. In addition to providing read-alouds throughout the day, the Raising A Reader team was invited on stage with bilingual children's author and performer José-Luis Orozco to dance! Read all about the event on the Kenneth Rainin Foundation blog.  See more photos of the event here, and visit TalkReadSing.org for more info.

Best Books: Staff Picks!

1, 2, 3 to the Zoo

by Eric Carle

"1,2,3 to the Zoo by Eric Carle. The first thing I adore about this book is that is wordless, which gives a ton of freedom to create stories, movements, and questions. Kids love the fact that it's a train that is taking the animals to the zoo, and the animals themselves offer opportunities to make different sounds throughout the story to build phonological awareness. It is also a counting book, which makes it perfect to practice numbers and shapes. This amazing book also has wonderful illustrations. You name it - it has it all!"

- Dulce Torres, Community Literacy Specialist

East Bay

Abiyoyo

by Pete Seeger

"This South African folktale is full of great vocabulary, singing, and adventure. Teach kids the words like "ukulele," " magic wand," and "ostracized" by letting them finish your sentences and using entertaining movements.  This book engages children of from Pre-K to 5th grade, and every time I read this story, children leave singing 'Abiyoyo' all day long."

- Sara Rizik-Baer, Program Coordinator

Alameda County
