Staff Picks: Summer Reading Favorites...

BooksEating the Alphabet: Fruits and Vegetables from A to Z

by Lois Ehlert

"This is a great book, especially with all the great fruits and vegetables that are now in season.  It is also an alphabet book, to help the children with letter names and sounds.  When you read to your child, talk about their favorite fruits and vegetables. Some in the book are more unusual - they may want to give them a try! Parents can also engage their children while visiting the grocery store or farmers market - talk about the fruits and vegetables you like best, and how you could make a fruit salad, soup, or anything else!"

- Jeannie Peirce, Program Coordinator

Contra Costa County

A Cat and a Dog

by Clair Masurel & Bob Kolar

"This story is about a cat and a dog that are always fighting with each other about everything. This book helps your child to develop critical thinking and narrative skills as you talk about the conflicts cat and dog deal with every day. This book is particularly great at fostering social-emotional development by demonstrating how to share and help others.  My favorite thing to do when sharing this book is to let the children think about what the dog and cat will do to solve their problems. They come up with very creative solutions!"

- Gabriela Rodriguez, Program Coordinator

San Francisco
