I would like to remind everyone that the fall season is the perfect time to schedule your annual holistic physical. I introduced this service last year, and it was very successful. As you know, prevention is the most powerful energy with regards to staying healthy throughout the cold and flu season. Now would be the perfect time to schedule yours!

Make it a NO Cold and Flu Season

 

As the days get shorter and the air gets cooler, the fall and winter season may bring colds and flu for many people. This is a normal part of these seasons for some people. They believe it is completely normal to be debilitated by a cold or flu for more than a weeks time, and some people may even get multiple colds and flus throughout a fall and winter season.

 


Often people will remark to me that "something is going around because everyone in my office is coming down with the same thing".  The truth is there is always something going around, but it depends on your own immune system's function on whether you are affected by it. Many factors  determine whether you get sick and it has more to do with the functioning of your own immune system vs. exposure to a virus, bacteria, etc.

Stress, eating foods we are sensitive to, low vitamin and mineral levels, lack of exercise, too much sugar are just some of the things that deplete proper immune function. It is no coincidence that more people get sick in December and January than any time of year. They also indulge in more sugar and alcohol than at any time of year. Who doesn't have an office full of every chocolate and candy treat imaginable in December during holiday season?

In New York, these months also take away our exposure to natural sunlight, since the days are much shorter. People are outside less during these months because of the cold and get less exposure to the suns rays, which is the best way to get vitamin D. If you live north of Georgia, it is impossible to get adequate vitamin D absorption from the sun during the winter months, because UVb rays can't penetrate the earth's atmosphere enough for vitamin D production by the skin.

Depending on the person, vitamin D3 supplementation may help their immune system function better during the winter months. Not everyone needs vitamin D supplementation, but may need other nutrients. Many medical doctors tell patients to take vitamin D based on low blood values. Not everyone should take vitamin D and it depends on the individual whether this is right for them. Muscle Testing provides a clear answer whether vitamin D3 supplementation is safe for the individual.

Through my years of treating patients and helping so many people achieve better functioning immune systems, I have found there is one herb that helps people during these months vs. any other herb or supplement. Everyone has heard of this herb and may be surprised by the information in this newsletter about it.

Drum roll please, this herb is ECHINACEA. There is so much misinformation about this herb, starting with that it can't be used long term. First of all, most echinacea products are the aerial and flowering parts of the plant that is used in the product.

The echinacea product that has been studied to be the most effective and CAN BE TAKEN LONG TERM is the root of echinacea or echinacea premium. There is a great myth out there that echinacea can not be taken long term.

This is only true for the majority of echinacea products on the market which are the flowers and stem, the root can be taken long term very safely and has amazing immune enhancing effects on the body.

The quality of product is another important factor. Quality echinacea root that really works is very expensive and is only found in specific locations on our planet. The company mediherb ( standard process sister company) gets its echinacea root from a specific longitude and latitude. They rigorously test the roots to make sure they have proper alkylamides, which is the active ingredient.

There are also many echinacea species, and the echinacea species that is used in this product is echinacea angustifolia and purpurea. The dosaging matters as some people may need 2, 3, or 4 per day to protect against colds and flus. Three is usually a safe bet, spread out throughout the day.

Another product that generally will stop colds and flus in their tracks is andrographis complex by Mediherb. Everyone should have this product in their herbal medicine cabinet. It consists of andrographis, holy basil (used in ayurvedic medicine), and echinacea root. If you feel a cold coming on or already have a cold or flu, this will do wonders to shorten the duration. Usually this is taken for no longer than one week for acute infections.
