January 2014
Dear ,

Goodbye 2013 and welcome to 2014.  2013 was an interesting year on a number of fronts.  Many of the effects to 2013 will soon be realized as taxpayers file their income tax returns, renew their health insurance and pay insurance premiums.  On the positive side of things, many of our clients realized a better than average return on their investments in retirement plans and other accounts.  On the not so positive side of things, many taxpayers will experience an increase in income tax rates for ordinary income, capital gains and on passive income from investments and rental activities.

If you have any lingering questions regarding your tax status for 2013 and beyond, we are well prepared to assist you in providing not just answers but solutions to ease the burden and frustrations associated with tax minimization and wealth preservation.

Please check out this month's tax, marketing and technology tips.  We look forward to assisting you in 2014.

Boost Your Networking and Build Stronger Business Relationships

3 Strategies to Boost Your Networking

Not everyone finds networking easy, and even those who are extroverts find themselves in situations where even they don't want to network. But you have to network to succeed and should always do so with the right attitude. Networking helps build relationships. This is critical to help sustain and grow your business. Below are three common networking pain points and how to push through them.

"I'm Networked Out"

Maybe you are looking for a job or trying to build relationships in a new industry or city. Whatever the reason you have been attending many events lately and you just want a break. This is reasonable; you shouldn't burn the midnight oil every night.  But there are also times when you need to grin and bear it. It's times like these when you have to remind yourself that by not going you could miss out on a life changing connection.

"I Never Talk to Anyone Good"

For some people the reason they avoid networking events is because they always feel that they never leave having made any meaningful connections. You show up, get something to drink, a few snacks, chat for a few minutes, but you don't feel the relationship building juices flowing.

This is probably the hardest part about networking especially if you are more introverted and a little shy. One of the best ways to overcome this is to remember that people only want to get to know you as much as (if you look like) you want to get to know them.

Translation: Make sure you're not hanging out by the snack bar all night watching the clock to see how much longer the event is going to last. Walk around, smile, and then engage. If you are actively listening and pose a thought every now and then, the conversation will continue to flow and people will leave with a great impression of you.

"I'm Sick of the Small Talk"

At networking events there is a certain amount of getting to know each other that goes along with building relationships. But in order to get to this point it usually begins with a little surface level chit chat. If you feel that this is what most of your conversations at events consist of try updating your networking conversation starters. Also try a different venue for attending your networking events. They don't always have to be a cocktail hour reception. This could put you in a better mood or inspire you to collaborate through a different approach.

4 Tips on Building Stronger Business Relationships

An important aspect to remember about networking is that it is not a one-time deal. Once you make that connection, you have to continue to grow and build upon it.  Relationships need trust and require constant contact over time. Here are four tips to help you build valued connections.

Be Helpful

When working with business relationships people like to have connections with people they feel can help their career or business. Be that person. Provide advice, expertise, or feedback and make sure to share information such as events or research that may be beneficial to others. Also promote your contacts' work with others when appropriate. People will feel more inclined to help you when you are helpful to them.

Keep People Posted

Send updates about trends you are learning and tasks you are accomplishing. Ask your contacts to do the same. By doing this, you can determine who in your network is an industry leader in their field. This can lead to connections in the future.

Stay Top of Mind

Make sure to ask your connections to join you for coffee or invite them to an event you are attending. You don't want to go too long without being on someone's radar. If you do not have a reason to meet, send your connection an email and ask them a question. They will feel well-regarded that you value them as an expert and will be happy to provide advice. You can also communicate through social networks and comment on their blogs, etc.

Be Visible

Make it easy for people to see you and know what you are doing online. Maintain a strong online presence on relevant social network sites such as LinkedIn. Publicly promote your expertise and provide updates on your learnings here or through your personal blog.

Technology Tip from Sharon Bragg

Windows XP Support Expiring

The Windows XP operating system is 11 years old.  As far as Microsoft is concerned it is on its last legs.  Official support for XP expires on April 8, 2014.  That means there will be no further security updates for this operating system.  Approximately one-third of all PCs are still running XP.  Running software that will never be patched for security vulnerabilities is a significant gamble.

Windows XP has been a target of virus writers almost from its inception and will only attract more once the deadline for security patches passes.  Consider your migration plans carefully and determine when you can upgrade your operating system.  If you have custom software that requires XP to work, contact your vendor to find out their plans for upgrading their program to a newer operating system.

Microsoft offers a program called the Windows Upgrade Assistant, which you can download and run to determine if your PC meets the system requirements for upgrading to the latest version of Windows.  If it meets the requirements, you can upgrade.  If not, it might be time to consider shopping for a new computer.  Data security is a serious issue.  Don't put yours at risk by holding on to that outdated operating system.

Thanks for taking the time to read our newsletter.  Stay tuned for next month's tips and features.
