February 2013
Dear ,

Tax filing season is upon us and we're meeting with many of our clients over the next few months. For some of our clients this may be the only face-to-face meeting we have all year. We prefer to meet more frequently than that and be more involved in our clients' businesses and finances. We like to be a "trusted advisor" to our clients -- someone they can count on for objective, competent, financial, accounting and tax expertise. In a recent study by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, 52% of business decision-makers rank CPAs as their most trusted advisor, the highest among all finance professionals. Does SME or your current CPA fall into the category of your most trusted advisor? We certainly hope so!

In other news, with all the tax law changes taking effect in 2013, there has never been a better time to meet with us and discuss planning opportunities. Higher tax rates, higher social security taxes, phase out of exemptions, and new Medicare taxes are only a few of the changes in store. Start planning now to lessen the impact of these changes in your finances.

We hope to see you soon for a face-to-face meeting!

Selling Professional Services

Widget selling and service selling are different in many ways.  You can see, smell, touch, hear or taste a widget.  However, selling a service means selling a relationship and trust.  If you are selling widgets you employ a salesperson on a showroom floor to demonstrate the widget's abilities.  Selling a service means acquiring the facts of the project in order to best communicate how you will meet the needs of the project.  A person who is technically competent to meet the needs of the project may not be equipped with the skill to address key project concerns such as a target budget, the competition, what the client liked or disliked about their last provider and how the decision is made and who is making it.

So while it is important to understand the technical aspect of any project, knowing what is driving the decision will determine your success at winning the new client.  If you currently do not have a professional salesperson on staff, I recommend hiring one or at least obtain sales training for your technical employees.  Remember, this isn't widgets - this is a relationship.

TSPLOST Changes Steps for Filing Georgia Sales Tax

Clients who attempt to file their January sales tax may notice calculation issues on the GTC website when using the short form.  One client noticed that the online form was not calculating his tax at 8% -- it was higher.  The GTC representative in Atlanta responded that there are changes in a couple of steps for counties impacted by the TSPLOST.  Therefore, we wanted to share the information with you now.

Here are the steps to follow after logging in to GTC:

(1)    Log in as normal, and in Step 1: Do you have sales and use activity?  Select Yes.

(2)    On the next screen, the 4th box down that says you have sales/use tax in TSPLOST counties should be CHECKED.

(3)    This will lead you to the LONG form.  The short form is no longer available for TSPLOST counties.

(4)    Enter your total sales and exempt sales.  Your taxable sales and the state portion of the tax (4%) automatically calculate.

(5)    Click on the blue words in line #4 to choose your county or counties.

(6)    On the next screen, you will choose your counties and input the amount of TAXABLE sales for each county.

(7)    You will get a message that you have chosen a TSPLOST county and the TSPLOST amount will automatically calculate.

(8)    When you click OK, it takes you back to your sales tax form, where you will see the county amounts input, as well as the TSPLOST.

(9)    Your total tax will be 8%, and then vendor's compensation will come out from there like normal.

Thanks for taking the time to read our newsletter.  Stay tuned for next month's tips and features.

Sincerely,
