GESUNDHEIT: COPING WITH SPRING ALLERGIES

Spring has sprung and so has allergy season. As such, it is important to get ahead of your symptoms.

  • If you use over-the-counter or prescription allergy medication, start taking it now before your symptoms peak.
  • Monitor the pollen counts, and avoid spending too much time outside on days when the counts are high.
  • Keep the windows in your home closed and be sure the filter in your air conditioner is clean.
  • If you have a dog or cat that goes outside, be sure to wipe his fur off before allowing him in your home. Fur can trap pollen, dust, mold and other allergens.
  • Vacuum your home frequently.

If your symptoms become intolerable, consult your physician about other possible treatments.

APRIL: IBS AWARENESS MONTH

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a disorder characterized by abdominal pain or discomfort, bloating and altered bowel habits.

If you suffer the symptoms of IBS, you are not alone. IBS affects between 25 and 45 million people in the United States. Most persons with IBS are under the age of 50. But many older adults suffer as well.

The exact cause of IBS is not known. Symptoms may result from a disturbance in the way the gut, brain, and nervous system interact. This can cause changes in normal bowel movement and sensation.

Although IBS is common, few seek medical care for their symptoms. As such, if you think you may be suffering from IBS, speak with your doctor.

More information about IBS is available from the International Foundation for Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders
