SCENES from MOTHER'S DAY PROCESSION
(photos courtesy Harry Connolly)

Saint Leo's Church extends GRAZIE to those who made its Mother's Day celebration a great success, especially Miss Lily Mariana Blattermann (pictured left) who crowned the Blessed Mother, escorted by Eleanor Stein who crowned the statue in 1941 at age 7. More thanks to musician Nancy Krebs, Sodality of Our Lady, Knights of Columbus and participants who walked in the parish procession. It was a beautiful event!

BLAST FROM THE PAST

Submitted by Joe Ribero
Owings Mills, MD

"This photo of family and friends of the neighborhood is from the mid-50s. First a little history ... My mother, Rosa Ippolito, of 909 Fawn Street married POW Giovanni Ribero, who was best friends with Lelio Tomasina, Bruno Brotto and Sergio Brotto. Lelio and Bruno were also POWs at Camp Meade. This is how my father met these lifelong friends. After the war, my mother married Giovanni and when they returned from Italy, they moved to Fawn Street until they purchased property and built a house in the county [photo taken in basement of that house]. This picture is a classic of my childhood, as we used to say ... the Sunday morning services. These were true friends that will never be apart.

Ancient Puppy Paw Prints Found on Roman Tiles. Read story online>>>

Chef Sergio Vitale at Aldo's in Little Italy has a similar tale ... "Anyone who has dined in our below-ground Tuscan Wine Cellar knows that we have a similar story to tell. When the tiles were being laid for our terra-cotta floor, I spotted a tile with puppy prints laying on top of a heap of discarded tiles. The paw prints baked into the tile reminded me of my own Labrador and of the many truffle-hunting dogs of Italy, so I decided the tile deserved a special place of honor and recognition in the room. I had it placed at the foot of the steps at the entrance to our Tuscan Wine Cellar. The next time you visit Aldo's, take a moment to tour the Wine Cellar ... and look for the tile with puppy prints!"
