I REMEMBER WHEN ...

"We still own 1003 and 1005 Fawn Street. My grandfather (born 1906) was born in #1003 and my grandmother (born 1905) was born in #1005; they bought the house at 1308 Gough Street when they got married. We still have that one, too. The other two have been in our family well over 100 years."  ~ Mark Cavaliere

LIPOA's CHRISTMAS PARTY

The Little Italy Property Owners Association (LIPOA) says "grazie" to all those who attended, restaurants that donated, and neighbors who volunteered in any capacity for the annual Little Italy Christmas Party. With over 100 counted guests, the Christmas spirit was seemingly felt by all, making this party a resounding success. Amidst great food, good company, jolly music, flowing wine and Santa, it is clear to see what makes 'The Neighborhood' such a special place to live in Baltimore.

BANALITA' (trivia)

THREE OF THE MOST ILLUSTRIOUS COMMUNICATORS IN ITALIAN HISTORY
were Boccaccio, Petrarca, and of course, Dante Alighieri. Each of these wordsmiths dusted off the world of highbrow literature and made it available to the people. As was typical for medieval times, Dante, and to a certain extent, Petrarca, wrote illustriously about love and of the conflict between heaven and earth. Boccaccio, in his Decameron, which marked him as the first Italian novelist, focuses exclusively on worldly tales and every day people as he saw them. His tales were for the people and about the people.

  • PIEDIGROTTA BAKERY was recently featured in Baltimore Business Journal.
    • By Jenn Ladd: When you enter Piedigrotta Bakery, on Bank Street ... you can see Carminantonio Iannaccone laboring over dough through a glass window behind the counter. The Italian baker immigrated to the U.S. in 1993, after establishing a baking empire in Italy. Iannaccone worked in pastry shops and gelaterias in his childhood, and in 1969 at the age of 23 he opened the first Piedigrotta, near Treviso, Italy. The restaurant/bakery/gelateria grew to have a 200-mile distribution radius for its desserts, among them tiramisu - which Iannaccone quite possibly invented. Almost a decade after moving to the U.S., Iannaccone ...>>> (full story viewable with BBJ subscription)

BLAST FROM THE PAST

Submitted by MARK CAVALIERE
On my birthday at 1308 Gough Street in 1970. [Pictured] - Chris Cavaliere (brother), Aunt Pat Mazziotte (grandmother's niece), Michael Cavaliere (brother), Mary Ellen Cavaliere (my late mom), Angela Bertorelli (great aunt - grandfather's sister and sister of Joe Bertorelli, Maryland State Senator), Florence Popoli Romeo (grandmother's sister).

"Another Little Italy produced off-spring has left us - Pat Mazziotte (daughter of Mary Popoli, sister of my grandmother, Elena Bertorelli, and brother Mike 'Hokie' Popoli. This is one of my favorite pictures of Aunt Pat, reminding me of the best years of my life surrounded by family, many long gone. Our culture just does not produce people like this any more. Seems like yesterday I can hear her with that distinctive voice yelling to me in the pool on the 4th of July - "Marco!" And, of course, the required reply. The voice, the black bouffant, her glass clown collection. She would have made a great movie character, but it was all real. Her dedication to church and family, tireless helper to another great person, Aunt Mary, providing the best Thanksgiving memories anyone could possibly have. It is unbelievable that as we are all moving towards the inevitable ending of our lives, these memories are the best thing I own. You will be missed, even if time and distance has kept us all apart for so many years."
