I want to thank everyone for all their hard work to help put on the Charity Auction! It takes a lot of planning and a lot of volunteer effort to get it done, but we did it. I will have more information in October, but we made about $9700. A special thanks to Mr. Tim Busby, our auctioneer, who worked hard to get the highest bid.

Next up, the DMAQG Show October 1-4. I know everyone will be busy putting final touches on their quilts, whether they will be judged or not. I can't wait!

If you missed the August newsletter, let me remind you that the DMAQG Board voted to move the site of our Guild meetings beginning in January 2015. We will meet at the WDM Christian Church.  Many of you are familiar with the location - that's where we have our wonderful quilt classes. This move will save us money in our facility rental fee, plus we will be able to show our raffle quilt and sell our raffle tickets on-site.

Remember your pillowcases for the September meetings. I thought I was doing good to make 12 pillowcases, but someone told me that one lady made 100!  The goal is 1,000,000 so every pillowcase counts.

Grab a friend and I'll see you on September 23!

Finish Those Quilts!

We are looking forward to seeing all of your quilts.  If you are unable to finish any of your quilts in time for our September quilt drop-off times, please notify Janora Hayes.  You can reach Janora at janorah@gmail.com if your quilt will not be finished so she will not print a label for your quilt.

Raffle Quilt

The Guild's major fund-raising opportunity at this show will be the sales of raffle tickets for the chance to win the quilt made by Guild members. The Guild has a state license to sell raffle tickets for a limited period of time - September 25 through October 4.  Tickets cost $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00.

The quilt will be displayed at the following fabric stores during regular business hours:

  • September 16-23 - Heart of Iowa, Valley Junction
  • September 23-27 - Woodside Quilting, Des Moines

Quilt Drop-Off

Each quilt entered in the show must be in a pillowcase for drop off. You will not get the same pillowcase back, so use an old pillowcase or use one of the pillowcases available from the Guild. We will have pillowcases for you to pick up at our September meetings.

  • September 19-26 for judged quilts. Quilts are to be dropped off at Creekside Quilting during regular business hours. Pillowcases will be available.
  • September 19-28 for non-judged quilts. Non-judged quilts are to be delivered to The Quilt Block during regular business hours. Pillowcases will be available.

Volunteers Wanted

Volunteer to work during the show at VolunteerSpot. If you need assistance please contact Lynn Johnson at  lmjohn112@yahoo.com.  Remember you get in free the day you volunteer!

Please note:  The AQS procedure for volunteers has changed for this year's show.  Name badges will not be issued for Guild volunteers.  Instead, AQS is issuing daily color-coded wrist bands.  Guild volunteers will need to pick up a band at the DMAQG volunteer table each day for that day's admittance.  We are going to have aprons available for most volunteer positions. PLEASE bring your own name tag to wear.  If you are volunteering before the show starts then you can choose your day and pick up a band for that day.

If you have any questions about volunteering please contact Lynn Johnson  or Deanne Main.

Silent Auction

Please bring your Little Quilts to the September meetings. Leigh Lussie will be there to collect them.  This is a major fundraiser for the Guild.

Quilt Pick-Up

The take-down of show quilts will begin at 5:00 p.m. on October 4. You must pick up your quilts in person or arrange to have someone else pick them up for you. You should give that person a signed authorization allowing them to pick up your quilts. Take-down generally is finished in less than one hour so you should be present at 5:00 p.m. to pick up your quilts.

Awesome Opportunity -

Quilt Appraisals

Quilt appraisals - for both antique and current quilts - will be available at our show this year by AQS certified appraiser, Carol Butzke.  Appraisals are only $45.00 per quilt.

Quilts in our DMAQG Show will be appraised during the show.  Those not in our DMAQG Show and antique quilts will be appraised on Monday, September 29.

If you have any questions about this appraisal opportunity or for an appraisal form, please contact Renee McPhee at (515)333-1902 or reneem@perspectivecp.com by Monday, September 22.

Vendor Volunteers Wanted

Please keep in mind that our first responsibility to the quilt show is to fill all our volunteer slots.  This is very important with our obligations to AQS and to our own DMAQG show.  Know that if you have previously signed up for a volunteer slot, we will counting on you!

Thanks for helping make our show a success.

It's that time of year again!  Please start thinking about the possibilities of working with the Guild by taking a Board position for the 2015 year!

If you have any interest in a Board position, I would LOVE to hear from you!  If you are called or approached, please entertain the idea of joining the Board.  It's a great opportunity to impact our Guild.

"Our Last Hurrah"
Fall Retreat

We are excited and we are full.  It's going to be a great retreat.  Anyone still interested in attending will be placed on a wait list on a first come basis.  We usually have several last minute cancellations, so send in your registration or contact Terry Holt to be placed on the wait list.

If you registered as a "Hold My Place", please contact Terry Holt if you will not be able to attend.  We may be able to find a substitute for you.

NOTE:

For those who are "Hold My Place" $25 registrants, if you have not sent in a full registration long form please find the long form on our website and mail me the information, or give it to one of the Retreat Committee members at our Guild meetings.  This info helps designate roommates and room sites.  Your final amount, if you paid $25 to "Hold My Place", will be $115 to be paid by the October meeting.

Several members have mentioned that they would be happy to donate a door prize for the fall retreat.  Please excuse me if I have forgotten who you are, it has been a long summer for my family.  I would greatly appreciate it if you would take a moment to remind me of your generosity.  If you have a donation, please give it to me, Terry Holt, or any of the Blue Ribbon Women committee members - Barb Anderson, Jane Barnes, Chris Boots, Sandy Lanning, and Karen Grimes.

Looking forward to celebrating "Our Last Hurrah!"

October:  JoAnn Belling

JoAnn has enjoyed the sewing machine since she began producing her own clothes at age 12.  In 1965, she began quilting with heavy polyester fabrics and no formal instruction. Encouraged by a friend, she enrolled in classes in 1977 and has since designed numerous quilts and wall hangings. She has taught a variety of classes in the United States and Japan. Her influence in quilting has been felt from coast to coast. The Belling household has hosted a number of quilt groups for lectures and tours. Her finest work has been reproduced in national publications.

JoAnn has received Best of Show and other ribbons on her quilts at the Iowa State Fair and other competitions.  A total of 9 quilts have hung at Paducah, as well as, other national quilt shows.  The Quilt Room at Hotel Pattee, Perry, Iowa, is the site for "My Jacobean Garden".

Concepts of color and composition, which JoAnn uses in her photographic art, are applied to the designing of quilts, borders and quilt backart. All phases of quilting are enjoyed by JoAnn, but of greatest interest are the color and design portion. JoAnn's quilt lectures and trunk shows are both educational and entertaining.
