The word change, as a verb, means to transfer from one thing to another. At our August DMAQG Board meeting, the Board voted to change our Guild meeting venue from the WDM Methodist Church to the WDM Christian Church. We have had a long association with the WDM Methodist Church, but many Board members were concerned that we could not talk about, show, or sell raffle tickets for the Guild show quilt.

Beginning January 2015 we will a hold our Guild meetings at the WDM Christian Church at 4501 Mills Civic Pkwy, just about 2 blocks east of I-35. Many of you are familiar with this site.  It is the location of our workshops and classes.

There were many things that caused us to favor this location:

  • The seating is stadium-like, so you have better visibility.
  • There are NO stairs.
  • There is plenty of parking.
  • It will save us $80 per month.
  • We can show the raffle quilt, talk about the raffle and sell raffle tickets.

There are many changes in our lives, this will just be one more.

CHARITY AUCTION

On August 26 we will hold our 16th annual auction to benefit Women's Health Issues. The charities this year will be the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, American Heart Association, and the Alzheimer's Association.  The formal auction will begin at 6:00 p.m. with Mr. Tim Busby serving as our auctioneer.

New this year - a place to grab a drink or a cookie/bar and wait for Mall in the Hall to open at 5:00 p.m.. There will be a small fee for these items, as we have to pay to use the room. The café will be open from 3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.  So bring your items to sell, grab a snack, and wait to buy.

I hope you all grab a friend and attend the auction.

Mall in the Hall

Mall in the Hall is an exciting part of the Women's Charity Auction evening.  This wonderful giant quilting garage sale is a great place to purchase books, tools, fabric kits, and much, much more.

This year we are making a few changes in the Mall in the Hall procedures:

  • The committee will do all the pricing.  This will keep prices more consistent and fairer to all.  Bring your items to Fellowship Hall from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on the day of the auction.  Items should be worth less than $50.  The committee will move items to the live auction, if needed.
  • Bring items sale ready.  Items that need to be kept together need to be in a clear plastic bag or container.  Please make sure to indicate yardage on fabric.
  • Only the Mall in the Hall committee will be allowed in Fellowship Hall until the Mall in the Hall sale starts at 5:00 p.m.  This will insure that all will have a chance to get the bargains.
  • After dropping off your items for Mall in the Hall, go enjoy refreshments at the coffee shop which opens at 3:00 p.m. This will be an opportunity to meet and greet other Guild members.
  • A new addition to Mall in the Hall will be the Christmas Boutique.  Please see the following article to get ideas that you can contribute to this new area.
  • As always, you will pay for Mall in the Hall items in Fellowship hall.

Let's make this the best Mall in the Hall ever!

2014 Quilt Show News
October 1-4, 2014

Our quilt show is fast approaching.  Here are a few reminders that we wanted to bring to your attention as you prepare for the show.

Volunteers Wanted
Please sign up to volunteer as a Quilt Hostess. Your small group could sign up together and we will rotate your group around so you will get to see each other and the quilts! After your shift, you can spend the rest of the day at the show together. Individuals are also encouraged to sign up.

For those new to the guild or new to volunteering at the quilt show, here is a little information:

  • You get in free to the show the day you volunteer.
  • If you volunteer on Monday or Tuesday you can choose your day to get in free.
  • On Wednesday through Saturday, please check in at the volunteer check in area on the main floor of Hy-Vee Hall. We are just to the right of the main entrance, inside the front door. We will stamp your hand for admittance and give you a name badge.
  • We will have a place for you to leave your purse beginning on Wednesday.
  • For those hanging and taking down quilts, we ask that you just stick your car keys in your pocket and leave your purse locked in your car (trunk). We will not have a spot for purses during those times.
  • You must be a member of the guild to volunteer. We do allow husbands to sign up for hanging or take down.

Once again this year we are using VolunteerSpot to organize the volunteers for our quilt show. Here is how it works in 3 easy steps:

    1. Click this link to go to our invitation page on VolunteerSpot.
    2. Enter your email address.
    3. Sign up!  Choose your spots and VolunteerSpot will send you an automated confirmation and reminders. Easy!

Note: VolunteerSpot does not share your email address with anyone. If you have any problems please contact Lynn Johnson (lmjohn112@yahoo.com) or Deanne Main.

Please sign up on VolunteerSpot today!

AppraisalsNew for the 2014 Quilt Show

Quilt Appraisals

We are going to have a new addition to this year's show - the availability of appraisals by an AQS certified appraiser.  Our judge for this year's DMAQG show, Carol Butzke, is not only a certified judge but also a certified appraiser (who also teaches quilt appraising for AQS).  This has provided a wonderful opportunity for our guild to be able to offer appraisals.

On Monday, September 29, 2014, Carol will be available to provide up to 14 quilt appraisals of quilts, current and antique, that will NOT be in this year's show.  Carol will then be able to appraise member quilts hanging in our show during the days of the show.  Her written appraisal will be sent to the quilt owner within a month of the show and can be used for insurance purposes or for valuing quilts being entered in other shows.

We will be providing more information about this opportunity in the next few months.  Basically, if you have one or more quilts you would like appraised, you will need to complete the appropriate paperwork (available at the DMAQG July and August meetings) and provide a check made out to Carol Butzke in the amount of $45/quilt - both of these things sent to Renee McPhee, 2112 NW Gabus Drive, Grimes, IA 50111 no sooner than August 1, 2014 and no later than August 26, 2014, date of the annual DMAQG Charity Auction.   (Note:  paperwork is required only for current quilts; antique quilts are appraised differently.)  Renee will contact each member having a quilt appraised with drop off and other information.

If you have any questions about this appraisal opportunity, please contact Mary Shotwell at 515-279-2368 or WMShotwell@aol.com  or Renee McPhee at 515-333-1902 or reneem@perspectivecp.com.

Board Nominations

It's that time of year again!  Please start thinking about the possibilities of working with the Guild by taking a Board position for the 2015 year!  I am in the process of forming a search committee to help fill the open positions for next year.

If you have any interest in a Board position, I would LOVE to hear from you!  If you are called or approached, please entertain the idea of joining the Board.  It's a great opportunity to impact our Guild.

Thanks in advance for your consideration!

Retreat News

The Blue Ribbon women of the Itchn' to Stitch small group will host "Our Last Hurrah" retreat this fall. We have enjoyed our tenure as hosts, but will be passing on the baton to the 2015 Retreat Committee. The new committee will host the spring retreat scheduled for April 9-12, 2015.

We now have enough registrants to add the Wesley Woods Camp chapel so we will have plenty of space to spread out.  There are 6 openings left with the addition of the chapel space so we welcome your registration.  You can find registration forms on DMAQG website.

We are looking forward to some special activities this fall.  The Sew, Sew Joyful, small group will be giving a demonstration of the "very large quilt carrying bag".  You can even order the handles in advance and not have to mess with cutting a dowel.

We are also having a UFO Exchange.  This exchange should help us eliminate our projects that are half cut, half sewn, half quilted and half forgotten.  Maybe it's the quilt project that is still in the wrapper from the store or maybe, it's like one of mine, still wadded up in the corner where I heaved it in a fit of annoyance.  Retreaters will have the opportunity to pleasingly present their UFO and exchange the project for someone else's UFO.

Any questions you have about the fall retreat can be directed to Terry Holt.

Looking forward to "Our Last Hurrah!"

Community Giving Report

We are making progress on twin quilts for the YMCA Supportive Housing Project. At the May meeting I gave a challenge (I didn't commit Sandy to this) - if we have 50 finished twin quilts by the end of this year, I will personally do the YMCA dance at the December tea. We have twenty-five finished quilts, 16 quilts checked out for piecing, quilting or binding, and 5 kits for quilting or binding. That puts us very close to the goal.  Please stop by our table at the August meeting and check out a project that meets your skill and time.  At this time, we particularly need quilters.  Remember, in order to meet the challenge, we need the finished quilts by the October meeting; if you have one checked out, you may want to finish and return it. We will have the check-out sheet at the September meeting.

We especially want to thank all of you who have completed and donated placemats this year. It appears that we have reached our goal and have sufficient items to meet the needs of our recipients. So for the time being, we will be happy to accept pillowcases, lap quilts, patriotic quilts, and of course, twin quilts for the YMCA Supportive Housing Campus, but would prefer no more placemats for a while.

Our thanks to the following people for their donated time and talent for the month of July.

Library Hours
There will be no library hours in the Friendship Room in August, however, there will be a table loaded with books for sale at a much reduced price!

Books Currently Checked Out

Because there are no library hours in August, members who currently have library books checked out should plan to return books at our next regularly scheduled September meeting. It's the honor system!

Book Donations

Your book donations are appreciated, however, due to limited space in our storage cabinets, we ask you to contribute books only published after 2000 and in good condition.

Magazines are Welcome

Please continue to bring your quilting magazines to share with others.   Each month magazines are placed on a cart and made available "free" for members to pick up, if we have them available.

Happy Reading!

American Patchwork & Quilting
Pillowcase Sew-a-thon

American Patchwork & Quilting is hosting the first ever One Million Pillowcase Challenge 24 Hour Sew-a-thon at its headquarters in Des Moines, Iowa. Starting at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, September 19 and running through 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 20, the public is invited to Meredith Corporation to sew pillowcases for local Des Moines charities including Rebuilding Together.

We are looking for volunteers to partner with our staff to help event attendees make pillowcases to donate, guiding experienced and new sewing enthusiasts through the process.  About 100 volunteers are needed. Sewing experience is helpful but not mandatory.  Men, women and children above the age of 13 are welcome to sign up.  Volunteers are needed for various stations: rolling stations, sewing stations, and serging stations; staff members will train volunteers for each station. Volunteers will receive an event t-shirt.  You can sign up for a two-hour shift at www.allpeoplequilt.com/volunteer or register for two or more shifts if you'd like.

Find more information about the 24 Hour Sew-a-Thon at www.allpeoplequilt.com/sewathon.
