Newcomers
Newcomers Meeting

Summer is more than half over....where has the time gone?!

Newcomers is rocking right along!  June's program was presented by  Barb Smalley on the History of Quilting, and the Board was represented by our Librarians, Susan Harn and Sherry Baze.  Many thanks to them for their time and efforts!

July 15 is your next chance to attend a Newcomers meeting.  Phyllis Blood will be a one-woman show, representing Community Giving and presenting a program on "Embellishing Your Quilts".

Newcomers  meetings are open to all members who have joined the Guild within the past year.  The meetings were established to give new members an opportunity to learn about the Guild in a smaller setting, meet other new members, and hopefully start or join a small group.  We meet on the third Tuesday evening of the month at 6:30 p.m. in Room B of the Urbandale Library.

I look forward to seeing you!

Program
Guild Programs & Workshops

Deb Karasik will be speaking on paper piecing at our July Guild meetings.  The Wednesday workshop is "Turning Over a New Leaf" and Thursday's workshop is "Batik Wheels".  We still have a little room in each of these workshops.  If you've never tried paper piecing this would be a good opportunity to do a project that isn't too big .  Try it, it's easy!

September's speaker is Linda Augsburg, the new editor of American Patchwork and Quilting. She is waving the speaker fee in lieu of donations of pillowcases for the 1 Million Pillowcase Challenge.  We will be collecting pillowcases at our July and September Guild meetings.  Please show Linda that we are up to helping her meet the pillowcase challenge.  Reminder - there are no workshops in September.

October is our own wonderful and very entertaining JoAnn Belling.  JoAnn's class on Wednesday, October 28, is "Dazzling Carsidium", a very unique and beautiful pieced flower.  Her Thursday class is called "Stars Galore".

We still have room in all of our July and October classes.  Please contact us to reserve your space.

See you at Guild!

Month
July: Deb Karasik

Deb started her real quilting passion in November of 2000, when she got a call from one of her daughters, advising Deb, (the daughter...not Deb!) she was pregnant with triplets.  She picked up the quilting bug with a passion and joined her local quilt guild (the San Francisco Quilters Guild).

It was at the SFQG that she met Janet Mednick, who would later help her write a book for the American Quilters Society called "QuiltMavens Perfect Paper Piecing".

She has since written "Quilts With Attitude", also published by AQS, and is currently working on her next book.

Now based in Durham, North Carolina, Deb is quilting, teaching and writing professionally, and her travels take her worldwide to share her passion for contemporary quilting, meeting new people, and sharing her knowledge with quilters everywhere.

Special
Special Group Meetings

These small groups welcome any member of the Des Moines Area Quilters Guild who wants to drop in at as many or as few of their meetings as one would like.
TAG: The Appliqué Group

The Appliqué Group meets the third Tuesday of every month at the Quilt Block at 10:00 a.m. Anyone interested in hand or machine appliqué is welcome. We are a very informal group, and usually talk and sew and then have show and tell. Some go to The General Store Eatery after the meeting for lunch. This is a great meeting for people who want to learn more because we have a good range of appliqué-ers from new to very experienced.

If you have any questions, please contact Donna Horn at donnasartquilts@msn.com.
1800s Quilt Study Group

The 1800's Quilt Study Group will not be meeting until further notice.
