2013 Email Accent

As I write this the iris are fading, the peonies are blooming and the grass is growing faster than the man of the house can run the lawn tractor.

Isn't it wonderful the color palette Mother Nature gives us? If you've ever wondered if certain colors will go together just look at a flower garden.

I hope you will be using these wonderful colors to make your quilts.

We have so many areas where quilts are needed - community service, charity auction, quilt show, silent auction, and the President's challenge. Between summer BBQs and quilt making everyone will have a busy summer.

I still need a few more volunteers to help with the charity auction. If interested you can email me at uagena@netins.net . The auction will take the place of our regular Guild meeting on August 26. At this time two charities, American Heart and Breast Cancer Research Foundation, have been selected to be recipients of our donations. If anyone has another charity they would like considered, let me know.

Because we have had difficulty in keeping track of guests as to whether they were first time attendees or not, the DMAQG board has decided that all guests will be charged $5 for each meeting they attend. The $5 will apply toward membership if the guest decides to join the guild.  I hope each of you will grab a friend and bring them along on June 24 for another wonderful quilt program.

Have a wonderful summer!

Mall in the Hall

Mall in the Hall is an exciting part of the Women's Charity Auction evening.  This wonderful giant quilting garage sale is a great place to purchase books, tools, fabric kits, and much, much more.

This year we are making a few changes in the Mall in the Hall procedures:

  • The committee will do all the pricing.  This will keep prices more consistent and fairer to all.  Bring your items to Fellowship Hall from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on the day of the auction.  Items should be worth less than $50.  The committee will move items to the live auction, if needed.
  • Bring items sale ready.  Items that need to be kept together need to be in a clear plastic bag or container.  Please make sure to indicate yardage on fabric.
  • Only the Mall in the Hall committee will be allowed in Fellowship Hall until the Mall in the Hall sale starts at 5:00 p.m.  This will insure that all will have a chance to get the bargains.
  • After dropping off your items for Mall in the Hall, go enjoy refreshments at the coffee shop which opens at 3:00 p.m. This will be an opportunity to meet and greet other Guild members.
  • A new addition to Mall in the Hall will be the Christmas Boutique.  Please see the following article to get ideas that you can contribute to this new area.
  • As always, you will pay for Mall in the Hall items in Fellowship hall.

Let's make this the best Mall in the Hall ever!

Something New at the Charity Auction!

We have heard many of you say that you wish you could buy more affordable finished items at the auction.  This year we are opening a Christmas Boutique in the Mall in the Hall.

Items for sales will be new or gently used Christmas ornaments and handmade items that are suitable as Christmas gifts.  All items will be priced between $2 to $50 dollars. It will be a great way to buy a special gift for friends and family.

If you wish to make items for the Christmas Boutique, please make items that you would like to receive as a gift at Christmas - tree ornaments, coasters, table runners, candle mats, small quilted bags, stuffed toys, children's quilted books, etc.

Please give those items to the Mall in the Hall committee between 1:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. on August 26.  The committee will price the items.

Unfinished items and/or kits will be placed in the regular Mall in the Hall.

Thank you for your continued support of the Women's Charity Auction!

2014 Quilt Show Silent Auction

The 2014 quilt show will be here before we know it.  As always we will have a wonderful selection of little quilts and more for the buying pleasure of the quilt show attendees.  I am always amazed at the talent exhibited by our members.  The changes we have made in the past few years have been popular with our members and especially for those bidding on items.  We increased the size of the little quilts to 24" per side or a total of four sides equaling 96".  In addition to little quilts, we added bags, purses, and totes.

This year we are adding yet another new twist to the auction. We had heard may people say that since they cannot be here at the end of the auction they doubt they will have the high bid; therefore, they do not bid at all.  To rectify that problem, we have decided to try "buy it now for this price."  Therefore we are asking everyone who makes an item to pin a note on it with your name and the top price you think someone might pay for it.  Please don't undersell yourself.  If you would like someone to help you arrive at a price, please consult with another Guild member.  I have been involved with the auction for a number of years and would be willing to give you an estimate, if needed.

Please remember that many of our pieces are mailed out at the end of the show.  So anything you make must be able to be folded and MUST fit one of several post office "if it fit it ships" boxes.

Like every other year, the Guild depends on the generosity, great skill, and creativity of our members to make outstanding pieces that we have for sale at our show.  These quilted objects are the main source of income for our Guild.  So, once again we are asking for your help in contributing to the success of our quilt show by making a little quilt, bag, tote, or purse for the silent auction.

Please contact Leigh Lussie at leighlussie@hotmail.com or 515-276-0041 with any questions you have about donating items to the silent auction.

New Categories

2014 Quilt Show Entries

This year's DMAQG Quilt Show will continue most all of the previous year's entry categories.  But, we are also adding several NEW categories for this year, thanks to member feedback and requests.  The new categories are:

  • Mixed Technique - in miniature size as well as small, medium, large and XLarge.
  • Modern - in miniature, small, medium and large.

We have defined "Modern" for our show purposes to mean:  a quilt which uses a new design or reinterpreted traditional design, including improvisational piecing, alternative block structures, emphasis on negative space and/or asymmetry.

Please check the guild website for a chart containing information about all of this year's categories and sizes.

2014 Quilt Show

New Hanging Sleeve Requirement

Due to changes regarding our lack of floor coverings during the quilt show and to ensure that your quilts will hang off the floor, we are requiring that all quilts longer than 96" have the sleeve attached to the back 95" from the bottom of the quilt.  All quilts 96" and shorter will have the sleeve remain at the top of the quilt.

How To:  Layout your quilt on a flat surface.  Measure 95" from the bottom of the quilt and mark across the back of the quilt.  Put the top of the sleeve along this line and attach to the back of the quilt in your preferred method.

We appreciate your cooperation as we transition to this new rule.

Please feel free to contact Jill Reber, jillreber@yahoo.com, regarding any questions.

Fall Retreat

"Our Last Hurrah"

It's June and time to be thinking of snuggly warm quilts and cold weather.  Yup!  It is time to register for the fall quilt retreat.  Awe, you think that you still might have time later, but wait, this year you can save a space for yourself.  You can "Hold a Spot".

There are two ways to register for the retreat this time around.  You can do the short form and "Hold a Spot" for $25 or just do the long form and send in the full but bargain rate of $140.  Both registration forms will be available at the end of June on our website and at the June and July Guild meetings.

If you choose the "Hold the spot" option your remaining $115 is due by the October Guild meeting.  There is no refund on the "Hold a Spot" if you can't attend, but you can "sell" your place to another person and collect your $25 from them.

The reason we are trying this idea is that we need 34 minimum attendees to use the large quilting area and 44 to add the chapel area.  We pay a penalty of half of the chapel rental fee if we have to cancel this area.  So here's our plan - we will stop official registration at 34 and if you are number 35+ you will be placed on a wait list until we hit 44 registered.  We will give you your registration number so you will know your status.

The dates of the Fall Retreat are November 13-16.

If you have questions or concerns please contact Terry Holt.

Guests are always welcome! The $5 fee will be collected at the sign-in table.

Community Giving Report

We are making progress on twin quilts for the YMCA Supportive Housing Project. At the May meeting I gave a challenge (I didn't commit Sandy to this). If we have 50 finished twin quilts by the end of this year, I will personally do the YMCA dance at a meeting. We have fourteen finished quilts, six or seven quilts checked out for quilting or binding, and 10 kits for quilting. That would put us over halfway to the goal.

Please stop by our table at the June meeting and check out a project that meets your skill and time. We also have piecing suggestions for 10-inch squares. These are all fast and easy, and a good way to use up some of that fabric in your stash. We all have some that seems to now defy logic. At this time, we particularly need quilters.

We especially want to thank all of you who have completed and donated placemats this year. It appears that we have reached our goal and have sufficient items to meet the needs of our recipients. So for the time being, we will be happy to accept pillowcases, lap quilts, patriotic quilts, and of course, twin quilts for the YMCA Supportive Housing Campus, but would prefer no more placemats for a while.

We are now planning to recognize those who participate in Community Giving on a monthly basis. Our thanks to the following people for their donated time and talent for the month of May.

Mary Shotwell           Marilyn Dillivan          Betty Nelson
Helen Smith              Bonnie Hamling        Sue McMain

More Great Books on Sale in June!!!

In June members will again find a sale table set up in the Friendship Room loaded with quality books of all kinds and at a much reduced price.  Please stop by the book sale table.  We just may have the book you are looking for to give to a friend or keep for yourself.

Library Hours

Our library is open one hour prior to our afternoon meeting and one hour prior to our evening meeting.  For afternoon meeting attendees, we will remain open while treats are being served.  Evening attendees will want to plan to stop by prior to the evening meeting.  We do not remain open while evening treats are served.

Check-out System

At both afternoon and evening meetings there will be a table of books for check-out.  Books are checked out for one month and returned the following month, unless prior arrangements are made with the librarians...it's the honor system.  Since not all of our library books are brought up from our storage cabinets at each meeting, members looking for a particular book may want to look on our library website and then email the librarians with their request.  The book(s) will then be "reserved" and ready for pick-up at the next meeting.

Happy Reading!
