As I write this my lilacs are ready to bloom, the sun is shining and I'm ready to go see my granddaughter play soccer. What could be better?  Oh, I know, working on a quilt.

We have so many quilts to make and so little time. Let's see, where to start? You can make lap/twin quilts for community service. The Charity Auction is coming up August 26 and any quilted or other donation will be appreciated. The money from this auction will go toward Women's Health Issues.

We will need small quilts for the silent auction at our Quilt Show and you will want to have a quilt made to put into the show. The show is October 1-4. I just saw a notice from AQS that June 4 is the deadline to enter a quilt in the AQS part of the show.

And don't forget the President's Challenge due December 6. Whew, there are not enough hours in the day!

So, after all that being said, I hope you will grab a friend and join your quilting family on Tuesday, May 27, at 1:00 p.m. and/or 7:00 p.m. Remember to bring your Show and Tell.

Remember, you must be a member of our guild to enter a quilt. Please check with Joyce Moore at joyceil2q@gmail.com if you are not sure if you paid your 2014 dues.  We will use the July 22 meeting date as the deadline to enter quilts. The categories and entry form are posted on line. Go to dmaqg.org and click on the button for Quilt Show.

June 15 is the deadline for Special Exhibits. Please contact Ellen Kelly Smith at  ellenwkelly@hotmail.com or phone 515-279-2218 if you are interested in participating in our Special Exhibit.

Please refer to the March 2014 newsletter or the Guild's website for information on the hanging sleeve.

Volunteer sign-up will begin in July!

Linda Ybarro, 515-987-9459 or librarylady106@gmail.com, has lots of bookmarks and posters printed. Please contact her if you are willing to help deliver these when going to a quilt show or quilt shop.

Lastly, please donate to the Little Quilts Auction. For information contact Leigh Lussie at 515-276-0041 or leighlussie@hotmail.com.

Quilt Show Silent Auction

The 2014 quilt show will be here before we know it.  As always we will have a wonderful selection of little quilts and more for the buying pleasure of the quilt show attendees.  I am always amazed at the talent exhibited by our members.  The changes we have made in the past few years have been popular with our members and especially for those bidding on items.  We increased the size of the little quilts to 24" per side or a total of four sides equaling 96".  In addition to little quilts, we added bags, purses, and totes.

This year we are adding yet another new twist to the auction. We had heard may people say that since they cannot be here at the end of the auction they doubt they will have the high bid; therefore, they do not bid at all.  To rectify that problem, we have decided to try "buy it now for this price."  Therefore we are asking everyone who makes an item to pin a note on it with your name and the top price you think someone might pay for it.  Please don't undersell yourself.  If you would like someone to help you arrive at a price, please consult with another Guild member.  I have been involved with the auction for a number of years and would be willing to give you an estimate, if needed.

Please remember that many of our pieces are mailed out at the end of the show.  So anything you make must be able to be folded and MUST fit one of several post office "if it fit it ships" boxes.

Like every other year, the Guild depends on the generosity, great skill, and creativity of our members to make outstanding pieces that we have for sale at our show.  These quilted objects are the main source of income for our Guild.  So, once again we are asking for your help in contributing to the success of our quilt show by making a little quilt, bag, tote, or purse for the silent auction.

Please contact Leigh Lussie at leighlussie@hotmail.com or 515-276-0041 with any questions you have about donating items to the silent auction.

New Categories

2014 Quilt Show Entries

This year's DMAQG Quilt Show will continue most all of the previous year's entry categories.  But, we are also adding several NEW categories for this year, thanks to member feedback and requests.  The new categories are:

  • Mixed Technique - in miniature size as well as small, medium, large and XLarge.
  • Modern - in miniature, small, medium and large.

We have defined "Modern" for our show purposes to mean:  a quilt which uses a new design or reinterpreted traditional design, including improvisational piecing, alternative block structures, emphasis on negative space and/or asymmetry.

Please check the guild website for a chart containing information about all of this year's categories and sizes.

Education Committee
Volunteers Needed
T
The Education Committee is working hard to get ready for the summer activities.  We are seeing that strips are cut and other elements are ready.

What we need now are volunteers for the various events:
  • June 16 or 17 for Kids Classes at the West Des Moines Library 9 a.m.-3 p.m. (need 2-3 more volunteers)
  • July 24 or 25 for Kids Classes at the Pleasant Hill Library 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. (need 2-3 more volunteers)
  • August 7-17 for the Iowa State Fair.  Each day we need 5 associates to help the fairgoers as they make quilts for children's charities.  The shift is 12 p.m.-5 p.m..  You will be given an admission ticket to the fair and a parking ticket for regular fair parking.  In addition, you will receive a warm glow knowing you are helping with an exciting project.

If you are interested in helping with any of these projects contact Sharon Meisenheimer at rmeis@aol.com or 515-986 1145, and Jill Reber at mqquilt@aol.com or 515-999-2746.

Do you know what you do?  I do!  You care, share, and donate through the Des Moines Area Quilt Guild.  Here's a different look at your generosity.

Over the past four years you have helped the Guild distribute approximately 12,118 yards of fabric that was made into pillowcases, placemats, quilts of all sizes, bibs, Christmas stockings, and so many more items that are too numerous to list.  If you think about this financially, it is about $121,118 and that's without labor costs.

This tells me that giving is close to your heart.  We don't brag about giving but we can brag about our organization's giving.  Tell your friends what the DMAQG is able to accomplish.  Ask them if they would like to be a part of this generous effort.  Invite them to a meeting and then BRAG A LITTLE.

Community Giving Report

In April we donated 18 lap quilts to Ramsey Village, a long-term care facility in Des Moines. They were greatly appreciated.

We are making good progress on twin quilts for the YMCA Supportive Housing Project. We have several tops that need quilting, and soon will have quilts for binding. We also have kits for piecing. Please stop by our table at the May meeting and check out a project that meets your skill and time. We also have piecing suggestions for 10-inch squares. These are all fast and easy, and a good way to use up some of that fabric in your stash. We all have some that seem to now defy logic. At this time, we particularly need quilters.

We especially want to thank all of you who have completed and donated placemats this year. It appears that we have reached our goal and have sufficient items to meet the needs of our recipients. So for the time being, we will be happy to accept pillowcases, lap quilts, patriotic quilts, and of course, twin quilts for the YMCA Supportive Housing Campus, but would prefer no more placemats for a while.

We plan to recognize those who participate in Community Giving on a monthly basis. Our thanks to the following people for their donated time and talent for the months of March and April:

Leigh Lussie             Dorothy Kahler            Joyce Moore

Betty Nelson             Sue Main                    Gloria Overson
Paulette Clemens     Martha Henrich            Jill Picket
Margaret Simons      Sherri Street                Helen Smith
Phyllis Salsbury        Suzanne Lemon           Terry Holt
Carol Olson              Joyce Hart                   Marilyn Dillivan
