At last, some warm days. I can see buds on the lilacs, so thought I would incorporate that color into my next quilt.  Wait...I haven't finished the last one I started. I'm sure no one else does that.

Although the weather was rainy, I had a grand day doing the local Shop Hop with my daughter. She lives in NE Iowa and still has 7 inches of snow on the ground!  I do love to keep the economy going.

I understand from the Community Service ladies that we have a plethora of placemats and nowhere to take them. Maybe put a few of those sizes together and make a lap quilt. It's a thought.

I was able to attend one class with Flavin Glover and what a great time. More ideas for quilts. Just what I need!  Classes are great fun. You get new ideas, you get out of the house, and you get to gab with your quilting sisters. Try it, you'll like it.

I was happy to see one of my challenges taken up as Denise P. showed a quilt at show and tell for the first time. I know there are more ladies out there who have never shown a quilt at Guild, so come on ladies & gentlemen.

Remember, grab a friend and attend our next Guild meeting on April 22.

Small Groups

A Small Group Fair was held after each Guild meeting in March.  Fourteen small groups have indicated that they are open to new members.  Five guild members requested information about joining a small group.  The list of open small groups will be available during the fellowship time after both April meetings.

If you are interested in joining or expanding your small group stop by the table marked "Small Groups' to visit.

2014 Quilt Show News
October 1-4, 2014

Our show,  "A Symphony of Quilts...whatever makes your heart sing" is October 1 - 4, 2014.  That is only five months away!!  We hope you are planning to enter your quilts and look forward to seeing them.  We want to encourage all members to be part of this great show and share our work with the public as well as other quilters.

The special exhibit for the "whatever makes your heart sing" will be a great part of the show.  We want everyone to think of a particular quilt they have made and why it is a special one.  Look for more information about the special exhibit  below.

Our raffle quilt is currently being hand quilted on Wednesday mornings at Sacred Heart.  Please join us at 9:00 a.m. if you'd like to help.  We are pleased with the work being done and love the blue and white colors.  We hope to sell lots of tickets!!

Along those same lines, we want to encourage everyone to take part in the Little Quilts auction.  Please consider making a quilt, purse, bag or tote.  This is a main source of income for the Guild.  Contact Leigh Lussie if you have questions.

The bookmarks will be available soon.  Think about picking some up to share at other shows, shops and friends in other areas.

The categories for judging have been finalized.  Mary Shotwell and Renee McPhee have done a great job of fine tuning.  See their article below in this newsletter.

Let's make this one of our greatest quilt shows ever!

2014 Quilt Show Entries

This year's DMAQG Quilt Show will continue most all of the previous year's entry categories.  But, we are also adding several NEW categories for this year, thanks to member feedback and requests.  The new categories are:

  • Mixed Technique - in miniature size as well as small, medium, large and XLarge.
  • Modern - in miniature, small, medium and large.

We have defined "Modern" for our show purposes to mean:  a quilt which uses a new design or reinterpreted traditional design, including improvisational piecing, alternative block structures, emphasis on negative space and/or asymmetry.

Please check the guild website for a chart containing information about all of this year's categories and sizes.

2014 Quilt Show Special Exhibit

"A Quilt That Makes My Heart Sing"

What comes to mind when you hear that phrase?  Every quilter has a quilt which speaks to your heart and we hope you will share that quilt with us for a special exhibit at our 2014 DMAQG Quilt Show October 1-4.

A quilt for a special person....

One you've worked on and finally finished and it came out better than you thought....

That special fabric you found....

Finally using all those pieces you've been saving....

Completing your 100th quilt....

A quilt for someone in need....

The new grandbaby....

The wedding.....

A memory quilt....

A quilt that has been handed down to you.....

A quilt someone made especially for you.....

We ask you to reflect on your quilts (ones made by you or someone else) and select one you might like to enter in this year's special exhibit.  We will want you to share the story of why this quilt makes your heart sing.  Your story will be displayed with your quilt entry.

You have until June 15 to enter a quilt, however, we have somewhat limited space for this exhibit.  We will need the following information submitted with your entry:

  • Your name, contact phone number and email.
  • The dimensions of your quilt: width times length.
  • A brief paragraph about why this quilt makes your heart sing.  If your quilt is accepted for the exhibit, we will request a more detailed history to be displayed on a poster along with your quilt.
  • A digital picture of your quilt to help us plan and balance the display.

For the quilts which will be in the special display:

  • They should not be in the current quilt show or have been displayed in the 2013 show.
  • There will be no judging of the quilts in this exhibit.
  • These quilts do not need sleeves to be displayed.
  • You will receive additional information about drop-off, labels, etc., after the entry deadline of June 15.

We are excited about our special exhibit for this year's quilt show and look forward to seeing "what makes your heart sing."

Please contact Ellen Kelly Smith, with your entry by June 15, 2014, ellenwkelly@hotmail.com, phone 515-279-2218.

2014 Quilt Show

New Hanging Sleeve Requirement

Due to changes regarding our lack of floor coverings during the quilt show and to ensure that your quilts will hang off the floor, we are requiring that all quilts longer than 96" have the sleeve attached to the back 95" from the bottom of the quilt.  All quilts 96" and shorter will have the sleeve remain at the top of the quilt.

How To:  Layout your quilt on a flat surface.  Measure 95" from the bottom of the quilt and mark across the back of the quilt.  Put the top of the sleeve along this line and attach to the back of the quilt in your preferred method.

We appreciate your cooperation as we transition to this new rule.

Please feel free to contact Jill Reber, jillreber@yahoo.com, regarding any questions.

Retreat Committee Members Wanted

The Blue Ribbon Women would like to invite you to join a new group of women who will continue the Retreat at Wesley Woods.

The term of office is from spring 2015 to fall of 2016.  One person of the group attends the monthly board meetings.

We have to admit that the first retreat our committee did was a bit of a chore, but after that everyone took on what they were best at and we covered what we needed to in a few meetings.  We discovered our strengths and laughed at our weaknesses.  We have been overwhelmed with the generosity and help given by so many others.  They made our task interesting and joyful.

We already have a volunteer for the new committee but she can't do it alone. And besides, anytime you share a task it becomes so much more interesting and fun.  Getting to know one another is part of the deal.

Please speak to one of the present committee members if you what more information, or call Terry at 287-6734 if you are interested.  We will gladly provide any materials we have created and will mentor the committee through their first retreat.

Terry Holt
Retreat Chair

P.S.  Mark your calendars for upcoming DMAQG retreats:
2014 Fall Retreat - November 13-16
2015 Spring Retreat - April 9-12
2015 Fall Retreat November 5-8

New Opportunity

So the guild has been a blessing to you and you can hardly wait to hear the next speaker.  How about helping spread the news to other sewers and quilters in the metro area?

Here's your opportunity to give back.  We are looking for forward-minded people to join the Membership Development Committee.  This new committee will be focused on telling the DMAQG story.  We want to get out the information about our fantastic community service opportunities, and our stellar educational events.

It is OK to toot our own horn if this gives others the interest to find out how they can join our dynamic group of quilters.  The list of what we all do together is looooong and there are many opportunities for others who have like interests to join us.  We just need to let them know we are here.

Be part of this exciting chance to pass our art forward.  Be part of our legacy.  If you are interested, or would like more information, please call Terry Holt at 287-6734.

I'm looking forward to hearing from you!

Community Giving Report

Thank you to those who participated in the March Community Sewing Day. We had 12 people in attendance, and it was very productive. Fabric was sorted and cut into squares, borders, and binding, and quilt tops were started. The company was great, and the conversations lively.

We are making good progress on twin quilts for the YMCA Supportive Housing Project. We have several tops that need quilting, and soon will have quilts for binding. We also have kits for piecing. Please stop by our table at the April meeting and check out a project that meets your skill and time. We also have piecing suggestions for 10-inch squares. These are all fast and easy, and a good way to use up some of that fabric in your stash. We all have some that seems to now defy logic.

We especially want to thank all of you who have completed and donated placemats this year. It appears that we have reached our goal and have sufficient items to meet the needs of our recipients. So for the time being, we will be happy to accept pillowcases, lap quilts, patriotic quilts, and of course, twin quilts for the YMCA Supportive Housing Campus, but would prefer no more placemats for a while.

We are now planning to recognize those who participate in Community Giving on a monthly basis. Our thanks to the following people for their donated time and talent for the months of January and February.
