Newcomers
Newcomers Meeting

The Newcomers meetings were formed for the purpose of allowing new members to learn how the Guild functions, to meet other new members in a small setting, and hopefully form or join a small group.  The meetings are open to members who have belonged to the Guild for less than one year.

Many thanks to Marilyn Dillivan, Guild Treasurer, and Pat Hjelmeland for speaking to the Newcomers group at our March meeting.  All Newcomers are invited to join us the 3rd Tuesday of every month at the Urbandale Library.

The next Newcomers meeting will be held April 15 at 6:30 p.m. in Room B of the Urbandale Library.  Mary Shotwell from Brothers Keeper, Kathy Safris from Creative Vision, and Sherry Street from the Prison Quilt group will speak about their educational and charity work.  The ladies from Mary's applique group will also show their work.

A quick reminder - the library does not allow food or drink in the meeting rooms.

Come join us on the 15th.  Don't forget to bring your Show-N-Tell!

Guild Programs & Workshops

Our classes with Flavin Glover were very fun.  We expect to see many House and Log Cabin quilts at show and tell in the coming months.

Many of you ask us when workshop supply lists will be available.  Supply lists will be available on our website, www.dmaqg.org, one to two weeks prior to each workshop.

Our 2014 slate of speakers continue to generate much interest.  Please don't delay in signing up for any workshop you are thinking of taking. Our May workshops are FULL.  Wait lists will be kept for filled workshops and spaces usually become available at the last minute.  If you'd like to be placed on the wait list for any workshop, please contact Ann Reed, 515-276-6005.

Let's continue to make 2014 a fun-filled year of learning!

Month
April: Sally Collins

Sally Collins is an award-winning quiltmaker, teacher and author who has been quilting since 1978 and teaching since 1985. Her quilts range in size from small to wall size and although she is most recognized for her quality workmanship, attention to detail and teaching expertise, her continual love and interest is in the process of quiltmaking, the journey. Her focus for classes is on quality workmanship, borders and edges or drafting. All classes are developed to help students advance and improve their own creative and technical skills as well as how to critique and correct their own work.

BORDERS, BINDINGS, AND EDGES FULL

This no-sew class will focus on how to design, figure out, and fit pieced borders, corner triangles, narrow borders, spacer borders, automatic fit borders, and mitered symmetrical border prints to your quilts.  Sally will define, explain, and illustrate each style with lots of quilts, visual aids, and mock-up samples. Note taking supplies are all you need. If you are interested in bringing your next quilt to a beautiful conclusion, this is the class for you.

Thursday, April 24, 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

MY STARS

This project combines 3" and 1-1/2" sawtooth stars with accuracy being the focus as students create double half-square triangle units to create blocks. Students can choose whether to use one or both sizes, depending on their skill level.

Special
Special Group Meetings

These small groups welcome any member of the Des Moines Area Quilters Guild who wants to drop in at as many or as few of their meetings as one would like.
TAG: The Appliqué Group

The Appliqué Group meets the third Tuesday of every month at the Quilt Block at 10:00 a.m. Anyone interested in hand or machine appliqué is welcome. We are a very informal group, and usually talk and sew and then have show and tell. Some go to The General Store Eatery after the meeting for lunch. This is a great meeting for people who want to learn more because we have a good range of appliqué-ers from new to very experienced.

If you have any questions, please contact Donna Horn at donnasartquilts@msn.com.
Evening Appliqué Society

If appliqué is your passion join The Evening Appliqué Group at The Quilt Block in Valley Junction. The group meets on the first Thursday of the month at 6:30 p.m. We have members with pieces from basic to Blue Ribbon who meet to share tips and techniques.
