For those who aren't already receiving our newsletter:
2013 Email Accent
Greetings!

Greetings Quilters!

Our newsletter items are usually due by the 5th of the month, making it sometimes difficult to know what to write. So, here are the only things I will know for sure about March:

  • Daylight savings time (3/9) has begun, giving us an extra hour of daylight to quilt;
  • National Quilt Day and our Guild sew-in (3/15) has passed; and
  • SPRING (3/20) has officially arrived and I am TIRED of cold and snow.

Whew, got that off my chest!

I would like to thank Terry Holt for agreeing to chair our Membership Development Committee. Terry is very open to ideas and suggestions as to how we can promote our Guild and increase our membership. What a challenge to all of us!  If anyone could see what fun programs we have and what wonderful teachers we have in our Guild (can you say Sew Sew Joyfuls) we would not lack for membership.

Speaking of challenges, don't forget my President's Challenge. I have given you a wide palette with which to work as long as the colors are red, yellow, blue, or green, or any combination of the four. Size should be 36" x 36" and any subject is fair game. I expect lots of entries on December 6.

Remember to also start thinking of items to make and donate to our Charity Auction in August and I hope some of you will be making a small quilt to donate for the Silent Auction at our Quilt Show in October.

My final challenge.  I see a lot of the same people bringing quilts for show and tell. If you have NEVER shown a quilt at show and tell, please bring one for the March meeting.  Your quilt sisters and brothers would love to see them.

My final, final challenge! Grab a friend and fill the meeting room on the 25th. If they are not already members, maybe they will be encouraged to join.

Happy Quilting!

Small Group Fair

After each Guild meeting in March, there will be a Small Group Fair with the purpose of matching interested members with small groups that wish to expand.

Join us at the table marked Small Groups in the Fellowship Hall for treats and  information.  If your group is interested in new members, contact me at 222-4460, or I will be calling your group's contact person.

March is also your last chance to bring a signed hatchet block to thank the 2013 Board members for their service last year.

Looking forward to seeing you at the March meetings!

SOLD OUT!

DMAQG Spring Retreat
"The Quilting Games"
April 10-13, 2014

Mary had a little lamb,

Whose fleece was white as snow,

And Mary went to Retreat at Wesley woods

And her lamb and you are sure to go.

Now the story of Mary doesn't end here

Mary did the little lamb shear.

We will tell you in a little chatting,

She used the fleece for batting.

The retreat committee is delighted to announce that we have FILLED all of our spaces for our upcoming retreat, "The Quilting Games", at Camp Wesley Woods, April 10 to 14.  We are looking forward to all the fun of the games, including stripping (no, not that kind) and elephant games.

2014 Quilt Show News
October 1-4, 2014

The theme for this year's show is "A Symphony of Quilts. The special exhibit will showcase "Whatever Makes Your Heart Sing." More on that later in this newsletter.

Most of you know we cannot talk about our show quilt at the church during our monthly meetings. This is something that comes from the minister and we do not want to go against his wishes as we do not want to lose our meeting place!  We can, however, communicate our progress through the Guild newsletter.  Our quilt is blue/white and the pattern is a variation on Jacob's Ladder. The quilt is being hand quilted at Sacred Heart Church in WDM on Wednesday mornings from 9-noon. You are welcome to join us!  Missie Carpenter is working on a way to get raffle tickets to our membership before the quilt show.

Two new categories, "modern quilts" and "mixed technique miniature", will be added this year.

Leigh Lussie is planning something new for the little quilts!  You will hear more about this later in the year.  The size is the same as last year, 24" for each of the four sides for a total circumference of 96" or smaller. We would again like to have bags, purses and totes.

2014 Quilt Show Special Exhibit

"A Quilt That Makes My Heart Sing"

What comes to mind when you hear that phrase?  Every quilter has a quilt which speaks to your heart and we hope you will share that quilt with us for a special exhibit at our 2014 DMAQG Quilt Show October 1-4.

A quilt for a special person....

One you've worked on and finally finished and it came out better than you thought....

That special fabric you found....

Finally using all those pieces you've been saving....

Completing your 100th quilt....

A quilt for someone in need....

The new grandbaby....

The wedding.....

A memory quilt....

A quilt that has been handed down to you.....

A quilt someone made especially for you.....

We ask you to reflect on your quilts (ones made by you or someone else) and select one you might like to enter in this year's special exhibit.  We will want you to share the story of why this quilt makes your heart sing.  Your story will be displayed with your quilt entry.

You have until June 15 to enter a quilt, however, we have somewhat limited space for this exhibit.  We will need the following information submitted with your entry:

  • Your name, contact phone number and email.
  • The dimensions of your quilt: width times length.
  • A brief paragraph about why this quilt makes your heart sing.  If your quilt is accepted for the exhibit, we will request a more detailed history to be displayed on a poster along with your quilt.
  • A digital picture of your quilt to help us plan and balance the display.

For the quilts which will be in the special display:

  • They should not be in the current quilt show or have been displayed in the 2013 show.
  • There will be no judging of the quilts in this exhibit.
  • These quilts do not need sleeves to be displayed.
  • You will receive additional information about drop-off, labels, etc., after the entry deadline of June 15.

We are excited about our special exhibit for this year's quilt show and look forward to seeing "what makes your heart sing."

Please contact Ellen Kelly Smith, with your entry by June 15, 2014, ellenwkelly@hotmail.com, phone 515-279-2218.

2014 Quilt Show

New Hanging Sleeve Requirement

Due to changes regarding our lack of floor coverings during the quilt show and to ensure that your quilts will hang off the floor, we are requiring that all quilts longer than 96" have the sleeve attached to the back 95" from the bottom of the quilt.  All quilts 96" and shorter will have the sleeve remain at the top of the quilt.

How To:  Layout your quilt on a flat surface.  Measure 95" from the bottom of the quilt and mark across the back of the quilt.  Put the top of the sleeve along this line and attach to the back of the quilt in your preferred method.

We appreciate your cooperation as we transition to this new rule.

Please feel free to contact Jill Reber, jillreber@yahoo.com, regarding any questions.

Community Giving Report

By the time you read this, we will have completed our Community Sewing Day. We hope that many of you participated and enjoyed your day. Our goal for the day was to create kits for twin quilts, both for piecing and quilting. Please check with us at our March meeting and check out a kit that meets your interest.

We continue to accept pop tabs, personal hygiene items, fabric and notions for the Des Moines schools, placemats, and pillowcases.  Quilts for veterans, lap quilts, and children's quilts will also find a home, if that is your passion. Additional opportunities for community giving will be highlighted in future issues.

Thank you so much for your dedication and commitment to others through your incredible talent as quilters.

DMAQG Library Resources

Our library is for you!  We want you, the member, to make use of it and its wealth of information.  It's one of the benefits of being a member of our Guild.

A large collection of quilting books is stored in metal cabinets at the WDM Methodist Church.  At each meeting, about seventy to eighty books from a variety of quilting topics are made available for members to peruse, and if interested, may be checked out, taken home and returned at the next regular meeting.

We encourage you to go to our website and look at what's available for checkout.  If you find book(s) on the list of interest to you, you may e-mail Susan Harn, sageharn@aol.com, or Sherry Baze,  sherrybaze@mchsi.com, with your request and the book(s) will be ready for you to pick up at the next regular meeting.  It's that simple!

Lost/Missing or Misplaced Library Books

It's easy to forget to return books in a timely manner.  Earlier this year the Library Committee reviewed our collection and found the below books to be missing:

  • More Nickel Quilts by Pat Speth
  • Rose Sampler Supreme by Rosemary Makhan
  • Flower Bed Threads by Need'l Love
  • More Nickel Quilts by Pat Speth
  • Asian Elegance by Kitty Pippen
  • The Twentieth Century's Best American Quilts by Lehman Publications

We hope by publishing this list some will be returned.  Thank you for taking the time to check for us.  If you find you have any of the above books and would like to donate them that would be great too!
