WOW--What a Show!

We should all give a huge thanks to Pat Hjelmeland and Mary Martin for a job well done. Pat, Mary, and the whole Quilt Show Committee did an outstanding job.

Thanks also go to all the volunteers. You all worked hard and made the vendors, show-goers, and AQS very happy to be in Des Moines.

Thank you to everyone who entered quilts for display. I heard many comments about the quality of the DMAQG quilts. I have to agree, we are a bunch of talented women and men.

Also, visitors were impressed with our display of Giving Quilts, the Preemie Project, and the State Fair Program. A group from Missouri asked how we  got the State Fair Program  started and how does it operates so smoothly. All they need is a Sharon Meiseniheimer.

The special displays of the Treasured Quilts and the Family Legacy Quilts were very much admired. My family and I (Janice, Nora, Katherine, Zoe, Angie, Megan, and Cora) were proud to be a part of this display.

Please go the DMAQG website for the list and pictures of the winning quilts. You might also like to go to youtube.com/QuiltTV and watch the interviews that AQS conducted with some of our members: Anita Gogerty, Mary Shotwell, Karen Woten, and Julee Prose.

We are now nearing the end of our year. Please come the October 22nd general meeting. Be sure to sign up for a workshop with Pam Buda and register for a fun-filled four days of sewing and eating at the fall "Pajama Party" retreat. I am going, so join me and the rest of the Pajama Gang.

The annual meeting and December Tea will be held December 7th at the WDM Learning Center at 9:00 a.m.  This is when your entry for the President's Challenge is due.

Happy 30th!

Small Groups

When you join the DMAQG you are offered a chance to meet other new members at our Newcomers meetings on the third Tuesday of the month from January - November.  This is a great way to find other quilters who might have similar interests and decide to form a "Small Group".

In 2013, two new small groups, "Material Girls" and "In Stitches" were formed in this manner. To date, we have 39 small groups.  Small groups do so much to help the Guild throughout the year by serving treats at meetings, helping with the Charity Auction, and working at the Quilt show.  Many have been together for years and others are newly formed.

If you wish to belong to a small group or have several friends who would like to form a small group we would love to know who you are.  Go online to our website, download the appropriate form, and complete the form with the requested information.  The forms can be turned into the Vice-President at any Guild or Newcomers meeting.

Happy Quilting!

"Our Quilting Legacy" Quilt Show
October 2-5, 2013

Tusen Takk - a thousand thanks!

As we reflect on our October show just ended and the year that led up to it, a thousand thanks are in order.

Thanks to our show committee that always gets it done.  You are a creative, hard-working, dedicated group that meets the challenge of planning our very large show each year.  How many shows display around 800 quilts?!  Not many.  Well done!

Thanks to our members, and your spouses (who helped with set up and take down), for volunteering to fill the many volunteer slots needed to make our show a success.  You approach your duties with such enthusiasm and joy that it makes us so proud to be your quilt show co-chairs.

Thanks also if you served on a committee, showed your quilts and treasured quilts (we loved them!), made or bid on a "Little Quilt" in the silent auction, or loaned props for the special exhibits, etc.

Special thanks to Marge Pearson for designing this year's show quilt, to all who helped make it, the ladies who hand quilted it, and to Creekside Quilting for supplying the fabric and sponsoring the package check area.  The show quilt winner from the Sioux City area just happened to stay around for the drawing.  She was so excited to win the quilt--just look at the picture below.  This quilt will be loved forever!

Thanks to the Quilt Block and Creekside Quilting for allowing us to use their shops for drop-off sites prior to the show.

The Des Moines Area Quilters Guild truly is a talented, special group of people.  Happy quilting as you prepare for the 2014 Quilt Show.  You will be hearing from Kathie Anderson and Deanna WiIson (2014 co-chairs) soon.

Tusen takk!

Quilts for Quilting Campaign

The National Quilt Museum in Paducah, KY, is sponsoring a fundraising campaign, "Quilts for Quilting", driven by the talented artists that make up the quilting community.  Quilters are being asked to consider donating a quilt miniature or full-size quilt to the Museum to be used for fundraising purposes.  Most quilts will be auctioned at one of two live events that take place annually in April and August.  Some miniatures will be made available for the purchase in the Museum's gift shop.

The proceeds from the sale of these quilts will go directly into the Museum's general fund and put toward programs that promote the Museum's mission to advance the art of today's quilters by bringing it to new and expanding audiences worldwide.

Contact the National Quilt Museum for more information on the campaign and how you can donate a quilt to the "Quilts for Quilting Campaign".

Gifts for Retiring Board Members

It was noticed that the tradition of giving hatchet signature blocks to retiring board members has nearly disappeared. We were saddened since this is a very personal way of showing appreciation for all the hours of work these people spend conducting the business of the Guild.

To keep it simple, we are asking for the hatchet blocks with the signature of the person giving the block. We are not asking for any specific color or type of fabric. The fabric will reflect the personality of the giver.

When each recipient finishes their quilt, it will be a scrappy quilt showing the diversity of the membership. Each quilt will be a cherished remembrance of time on the DMAQG Board.

The following people will be retiring from their positions on the board:

Peggy Kirk
Barbara Hines
Deb York
Janora Hayes
Nancy Kucera
Pat Hjelmeland
Mary Martin
Karen Macon
Katherine Roccasecca
Emma Thomas-McGinnis

Community Giving Report

Thank you to everyone who got those preemie quilts finished up for our Community Giving display at the quilt show. Congratulations, ladies, on your creative talent and generosity!

We will continue to collect them throughout the year, but are pleased to have the majority ready to turn over to The Preemie Project after the show.

Don't forget about those other charity quilts to finish or quilt, either. Now is the time to get those finished up and turned back in.

We are still collecting pillowcases, placemats, quilts, toiletries, and tab tops. The Des Moines Schools have received one large collection of sewing donations, but we will continue to collect your items and pass them on.

Again, we thank you for your generous support!
