I have always been impressed by the generosity of the members of the Des Moines Area Quilters Guild. Throughout the years you have donated quilts to children, senior citizens, and the veterans, to only name a few. You also donate your time by volunteering at the quilt show, the children's summer quilting program, and the DMAQG state fair sewing room. Many members also volunteer at projects that are outside of the Guild.

The Annual Women's Health Auction, held in August, was another example of our willingness to give.

A big thank you to everyone who volunteered their time. The auction and Mall in the Hall could not have happened without you.

Thank you to everyone who donated items. I was impressed by the variety and quality of the merchandise.

Thank you to all the bidders and those who simply donated money.

Because of everyone's generosity, we raised a total of $13,580.05.

Mall in the Hall
$3,585.05
Auction
$9,995.00

The proceeds have been delivered to the following charities.

Breast Cancer Research Foundation
$2,137.75
Susan G Komen Foundation
$3,233.25
American Heart Assoc for Women
$7,709.05
Hospice of Iowa
$500.00
Grand Total
$13,580.05

All of the recipient charities were amazed and grateful for our gifts.

Quilt Show

Finish those quilts! Sign up to volunteer! Enjoy the show!

Remember, the money we make at the show supports the programs we will enjoy this coming year.

President's Challenge

Time is running short to complete the challenge "What Would You Hang on a Wooden Peg." Our quilts need to be finished in time for the December Tea and Annual Meeting on Saturday, December 7, 2013. Our membership will judge and select eight quilts to be entered in the AQS Grand Rapids show.

For a complete set of the rules, please go to the website, go to programs, and then click on President's Challenge.

Keep celebrating our 30th year!

Our Fall Slumber Party Retreat

One, two, zip the shoe,
Three, four, out the door,
Five, six, down the road
Seven, eight, we're in retreat mode,
Nine, ten, woo-eee, we're here again.

Nothing says Retreat like Terry's delectable poetry. The inspiration hits me because Our Fall Slumber Party Retreat 2013 is upon us. The Blue Ribbon committee will be ready to greet you on Thursday, November 7th and tearfully say our good-byes on Sunday, November 10th.

It is so wonderful to be at Wesley Woods because you get to choose. You can sew 24/7 getting those holiday gifts finished or take a mini-vacation and participate in all our scheduled activities. You can even take a walk to visit the horses and lake. But if you choose to participate in activities you can expect to earn some tickets for the grand prize drawing.

Our famed Stretchercise returns which will be led by Jane and her faithful helpers. And then if you exercise too strenuously or still have some kinks to work out you can choose to have a Gayla massage.

Besides the mini-classes and demonstrations by our Blue Ribbon committee women, two quilt shops will also provide classes and an opportunity to shop. Both The Quilt Block and Crazy Redhead Quilting will be in the house with surprises and treats.

Thanks to last spring's retreat feedback, we decided to offer lunch instead of brunch so you will need to bring some breakfast items.

You can find the registration form on our website or register at the September or October meeting. If you register by snail mail, we will send you the "Need to Know" information by mail also.

If you need any more info please contact, Terry, at 287-6734 or terryannholt@yahoo.com.

"Our Quilting Legacy" Quilt Show
October 2-5, 2013
Iowa Events Center
Des Moines, Iowa

Show Hours:    Wednesday through Friday -- 9am to 6pm
Saturday -- 9am to 5pm

We are down to counting days until our show begins.  Are you ready?  We are!

Our treasured quilt exhibit will reflect quilting trends over the past 30 years.  The family legacy exhibit will feature 90 quilts from 17 of our members who have several generations of quilters ( past and present) in their family.   At last count you have made over 150 preemie quilts that will displayed.  After the show these quilts will be donated to local neonatal intensive care units (NICU's).  These special exhibits are in addition to over 400 entered quilts, our show quilt, around 100 little quilts for our silent auction, and our community service display.  We will have an awesome display of our quilting talent!

Quilt Drop-off Information

Quilt drop-off is now underway:
  • September 20th - 26th for judged quilts. Quilts are to be dropped off at Creekside Quilting during regular business hours.
  • September 20th - 28th for non-judged quilts. Non-judged quilts are to be delivered to The Quilt Block during regular business hours.

All quilts need to be placed in a pillowcase. The Guild has pillowcases for you to use and will be available for pickup at the September 24th Guild meetings or at the quilt shops during the drop-off dates.

Note: We do not return pillowcases to you so do not use one that you want back.

Quilt Sleeve Required

Each quilt entry (except miniatures) is required to have a 4" sleeve attached for proper hanging. You can find directions for making and attaching a sleeve on the Guild's website OR check with your local quilt shop for a sleeve product you can purchase.

Look for information about volunteer opportunities, the silent auction, and our show quilt in this newsletter.

This is going to be a great show for our Guild's 30th anniversary year.  Come early -- stay late -- volunteer -- support our show quilt -- catch a lecture or class -- visit vendors.  Enjoy YOUR show to its fullest!

Happy Quilting!

Silent Auction
2013 Quilt Show

We are now moving into the last two months before the quilt show. That means it is crunch time in terms of getting all those projects finished for the silent auction. The Guild depends upon the generosity and creative skills of its members to provide articles for the "Little Quilts and More" silent auction. The money we make from the silent auction helps pay for speakers and other educational programs that the Guild provides to its members each year.

Remember that the size component is a maximum of 96" for the four sides of a small quilt, a bag, a table runner, or any object that will fit into a postal mailing box.

Each year I marvel at the creative little gems that are given to us to display during the show and send home with a lucky bidder. Your help is greatly appreciated. The DEADLINE for turning in your items is the September Guild meeting.

If you have any questions, please email me, leighlussie@hotmail.com or call 276-0041.

Volunteers Wanted
2013 Quilt Show

From time to time we have vendors who are in need of an employed worker in their booth.  As a service to the vendors we provide a list of names and phone numbers of members who are interested in working in this capacity.  If you are interested in being on this list please contact Sharon Meisenheimer-Vendor Hostess Coordinator (Rmeis@aol.com).

Please keep in mind that our first responsibility to the quilt show is to fill all our volunteer slots.  This is very important with our obligations with AQS and to our own DMAQG show.  Know that if you have previously signed up for a volunteer slot, we will counting on you!

Thanks for helping make our show a success.

2013 Show Quilt
The Legacy of Quilting

If you haven't gotten a glimpse of the 2013 Show Quilt yet, here's your chance! Our show quilt was finished just in the nick of time and was entered into the Iowa State Fair quilting competition. It won a red ribbon for second place and we are very proud of that!

2013 Show Quilt

Marge Pearson did a fantastic job designing this quilt to go along with our show theme, The Legacy of Quilting.  As our guild is celebrating 30 years, it was thought appropriate to have the theme Legacy of Quilting for the show quilt.  We started the center of the medallion with the very first quilts made and worked our way out to the present.  Included is Broiderie Perse, English Paper Piecing, Red Work, Pieced,  Needle Turn Appliqué , Trapunto, and Paper Piecing.  To finish the quilt properly for history it was hand quilted.  There are over 500 hours of hand quilting in the quilt  and many hands worked on it, from making the blocks to embroidery work to hand quilting.

2013 Show Quilt Finished

Thank you to all who worked on our Legacy of Quilting Show Quilt! And thanks also go to Creekside Quilting for their generous donation of fabric and supplies needed to make the quilt. Be sure to thank them when you are in the store shopping for your quilting needs!

We will be taking the quilt around to area stores once again this year. Be sure to make a trip to see it up close and in person. It is so beautiful and there are so many interesting elements to examine up close, including the aspects listed above, but also the signatures of many of the instructors who have done workshops over the years for our guild.

It will hang at the  Heart of Quilting in Valley Junction until the 17th, and then September 17-29 it will hang at Creekside Quilting in Clive.

(Please be aware of traveling dates for the quilt and know that it may not be up and showing the entire day at that location.  I will be picking up just before noon and delivering to the next store just after noon in most cases.)

Ticket sales for the raffle drawing will be the same as last year.  We will only be selling tickets at the show. This does not stop you from promoting the Show Quilt ahead of the show! Be sure to keep a picture handy on your phone to show or print a small picture and carry it around, sharing the details of when tickets will be sold to all those you know who love quilts. Share it on Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, and blogs if you participate in those social media. And of course, be sure to plan to stop by the ticket sales booth at the show and purchase tickets for yourself! Funds raised from our sales efforts helps our guild tremendously! An easy way to buy tickets is to bring a few address labels from home to fill out the tickets quick and easy! Thank you in advance for doing the best you can to get folks to the show to buy tickets!

Thank You

The Guild received the following thank you from the Alzheimer's Association:

Thank you for your in-kind donation of a wonderful handmade quilt to the Alzheimer's Association, Greater Iowa Chapter.  Your generosity allows the Alzheimer's Association to redirect financial resources to our mission:  To eliminate Alzheimer's disease through the advancement of research; to provide and enhance care and support for all affected; and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health.

Nearly one in every three seniors who dies each year has Alzheimer's or another dementia.  Currently there are over 5 million Americans living with Alzheimer's disease.  That number is expected to grow to as many as 16 million by 2050.  Every 68 seconds an American develops Alzheimer's.  By mid-century an American will develop the disease every 33 seconds unless we continue to work diligently together to find a cure.

On behalf of the many Iowans touched by Alzheimer's disease, we extend our gratitude.

Sincerely,

Chantelle Mathany

Development & Communications Coordinator
