September: Janet Pittman

 gardentrellisdesigns.com

A quilt artist from West Des Moines and a member of our own guild, Janet Pittman has been designing her own quilts since 1994. Her appliqué designs are stitched and then embellished to add natural texture and dimension for a realistic appearance. Janet is a Master Gardener and finds inspiration in her colorful garden.

Janet is the author of three quilting books and dozens of floral and kid-themed patterns. Her designs have been published in national quilt magazines including American Patchwork and Quilting, Love of Quilting, American Quilter, and Country Marketplace. She is also a nationally recognized teacher and lecturer.

Newcomers
Newcomers Meeting

The Newcomers group has had steady attendance this year, averaging 12-15 newcomers at each meeting.  These newcomers have taken advantage of a special meeting for those who have been a member of the Des Moines Area Quilters Guild for less than one year. All newcomers are welcome to attend the meetings.  Meetings are held the third Tuesday of the month from January through October. At each meeting, a Guild Board member explains the duties of her position, then a Guild member presents a program on a popular quilt topic/technique.

The next Newcomers Meeting will be September 17, 2013, from 6:30pm - 8:30pm at the Urbandale Public Library, Room B.  Janora Hayes will explain the Director at Large duties and then present the program, "Color is Relative" . Newcomers, if you have trouble putting colors together you won't want to miss this!

We encourage you to bring Show and Tell. Please remember no outside food or drink is allowed in the library.

Hope to see you on the 17th!

Future
2013 Workshops

September may mean back to school for some, but for me it means back to the sewing machine. I hope you will be inspired to do just that by a member of our own guild this month. Janet Pittman has some beautiful quilts to share with us, as well as many useful tips for turning some of those pictures you took of your garden this summer into lasting memories.

As we prepare for our guild quilt show and the AQS show, please don't forget that October will be the last opportunity to attend workshops in 2013. Pam Buda has some delightful and quick projects to teach that will make excellent Christmas gifts. And for the first time, we are offering not only the regular full-day class on Wednesday, October 23, but two half-day workshops on Thursday, October 24. Feel free to take one or both! The half-day classes are just $25! Plus, for you working gals, you only need to miss half a day of work.

Special Group Meetings

These small groups welcome any member of the Des Moines Area Quilters Guild who wants to drop in at as many or as few of their meetings as one would like.
TAG: The Appliqué Group

The Appliqué Group meets the third Tuesday of every month at the Quilt Block at 10:00 a.m. Anyone interested in hand or machine appliqué is welcome. We are a very informal group, and usually talk and sew and then have show and tell. Some go to The General Store Eatery after the meeting for lunch. This is a great meeting for people who want to learn more because we have a good range of appliqué-ers from new to very experienced.

If you have any questions, please contact Donna Horn at donnasartquilts@msn.com.
