August is here and it is time for the Annual Charity Auction for Women's Health Issues. I hope you have finished your donation projects. Don't forget the chocolate!

To make your life easier, we are providing a Donation Valet Service from 4:30 to 5:45 p.m. at the lower level parking lot doors. Just drop off your donation at the door and then go park your car.

The set up committee would like it if all donations could be at the church by 5:30. They also ask that you please stay behind the ropes until 5:45 so they can get all the items checked in and displayed. Once the ropes are taken down, you may go and look.

To make our lives easier, we ask that all auction items contain two cards or papers with a description of the items in the box/basket and the name of group or person donating.

One card/paper will stay with the item and the duplicate card/paper will first go to the reader, then the auctioneer, then the scribes, and finally the bankers.

The two duplicate cards/paper are extremely important for the efficiency of this operation.

All donations with a value of less than $50 will go to Mall in the Hall. Mall in the Hall donations need no cards.

These are the three charities that will benefit from our auction:
   1. Breast Cancer Research Foundation
   2. Susan G Koman Foundation
   3. American Heart Association for Women

Please bring your checkbooks and cash. All donations by check go directly to the chosen charities. Therefore you will need to write a check to the charity of your choice. All cash donations will be given to the American Heart Association because the cash can be delivered directly to them on Wednesday. No funds will be funneled through our bank account.

The auction will start promptly at 6:00 and we need to finish by 9:00.  Come at 5:30 for Mall in the Hall.  There will be no show and tell, and Community Giving will be drop-off only.

Keep celebrating our 30th year!

Board Positions

Wow, I can't believe it's already August! The older I get the faster time flies. I can barely keep up.

As vice president, one of my duties is to head the nominating committee to find members to serve on the DMAQG Board. On August 1st I had the pleasure of meeting with Mary Shotwell, Leigh Lussie, and Peggy Kirk to begin the nominating process. The ladies and I will soon begin calling individuals to ask them to serve in various board positions for 2014/2015:

  • Vice President 2014 (President 2015)
  • Recording Secretary: 2-year term
  • 2015 Program chair(s) elect: One person can do the job but having 2 people helps maintain your sanity. The position begins in 2014.
  • Directors at Large: 1 afternoon, 1 evening, 2-year term
  • Community Giving: 2 people for 2-year term. Positions overlap. 1 person needed for 2014/15.
  • Co-editor of Newsletter: 2-year term
  • Librarian: 2 people for 2-year terms. Positions overlap.
  • Website Coordinator: This is a job for a really computer- saavy person

You can see these are 2 year positions and many are a 2 person job, but years overlap, so one person stays and another comes on board each year so there is one who can guide the other.

I hope you will take time to consider our request to serve on the Board. If you would like to serve or know someone who would be a great candidate, please contact me at uagena@netins.net.

See you soon,

"Our Quilting Legacy" Quilt Show
October 2-5, 2013

Our show quilt was entered into the Iowa State Fair quilt competition and we are happy to tell you that it received a red ribbon in its category. You'll be hearing much more about our quilt (and your chance to own it) over the next two months.

A BIG thank you to all of you who entered quilts in our 2013 show. We closed entries on July 23 with over 400 entries which is a very good number. If you were not able to enter this year we hope you can next year. People enjoy seeing your work.

Quilt Drop-off Information

Please make note of these dates. Incorrect dates were published previously.
  • September 20th - 26th for judged quilts. Quilts are to be dropped off at Creekside Quilting during regular business hours.
  • September 20th - 28th for non-judged quilts. Non-judged quilts are to be delivered to The Quilt Block during regular business hours.

All quilts need to be placed in a pillowcase. The Guild has pillowcases for you to use and will be available for pickup at the September 24th Guild meetings or at the quilt shops during the drop-off dates.

Note: We do not return pillowcases to you so do not use one that you want back.

Quilt Sleeve Required

Each quilt entry (except miniatures) is required to have a 4" sleeve attached for proper hanging. You can find directions for making and attaching a sleeve on the Guild's website OR check with your local quilt shop for a sleeve product you can purchase.

Silent Auction
2013 Quilt Show

We are now moving into the last two months before the quilt show. That means it is crunch time in terms of getting all those projects finished for the silent auction. The Guild depends upon the generosity and creative skills of its members to provide articles for the "Little Quilts and More" silent auction. The money we make from the silent auction helps pay for speakers and other educational programs that the Guild provides to its members each year.

Remember that the size component is a maximum of 96" for the four sides of a small quilt, a bag, a table runner, or any object that will fit into a postal mailing box.

Each year I marvel at the creative little gems that are given to us to display during the show and send home with a lucky bidder. Your help is greatly appreciated. The DEADLINE for turning in your items is the September Guild meeting.

If you have any questions, please email me, leighlussie@hotmail.com or call 276-0041.

Volunteers Wanted
2013 Quilt Show

It's time to show your Des Moines Area Quilt Guild spirit and sign up to volunteer at the quilt show. This is a way to support the guild, a way to get into the show free, and see many beautiful quilts.

This year we are challenging your small group to sign up together for Quilt Hostessing Positions. This is a great way to see the quilts up close and personal. We will rotate your group around, so you will get to see each other. After your shift, you can spend the rest of the day at the show together. Individuals are also encouraged to sign up.

For those new to the guild or new to volunteering at the quilt show, here is a little information:

  • You get in free to the show the day you volunteer.
  • If you volunteer on Monday or Tuesday you can choose your day to get in free.
  • On Wednesday through Saturday, please check in at the volunteer check in area on the main floor of Hy-Vee Hall. We are just to the right of the main entrance, inside the front door. We will stamp your hand for admittance and give you a name badge.
  • We will have a place for your to leave your purse beginning on Wednesday.
  • For those hanging and taking down quilts, we ask that you just stick your car keys in your pocket and leave your purse locked in your car. We will not have a spot for purses during those times.
  • You must be a member of the guild to Volunteer. We do allow husbands to signup for hanging or take down.

Once again this year we're using VolunteerSpot to organize the volunteers for our quilt show.

Here is how it works in 3 easy steps:

  1. Click this link to go to our invitation page on VolunteerSpot: http://vols.pt/yCMxKk
  2. Enter your email address
  3. Sign up! Choose your spots and VolunteerSpot will send you an automated confirmation and reminders. Easy!

Note: VolunteerSpot does not share your email address with anyone. If you have any problems please contact Diane at di.m.crawford@gmail.com.

For those who signed up at the July meeting, you should have received an email confirmation. If not, check Volunteer Spot. If you don't see your name at the assigned to the time/activity you selected, please send Diane an email at di.m.crawford@gmail.com.

Thanks for helping make our show a success.

2013 Show Quilt
The Legacy of Quilting

If you haven't gotten a glimpse of the 2013 Show Quilt yet, here's your chance!

Our show quilt was finished just in the nick of time and was entered into the Iowa State Fair quilting competition. It won a red ribbon for second place and we are very proud of that!

2013 Show Quilt

Marge Pearson did a fantastic job designing this quilt to go along with our show theme, The Legacy of Quilting. As our guild is celebrating 30 years, it was thought appropriate to have the theme Legacy of Quilting for the show quilt. We started the center of the medallion with the very first quilts made and worked our way out to the present. Included is Broiderie Perse, English Paper Piecing, Red Work, Pieced,  Needle Turn Appliqué, Trapunto, and Paper Piecing. To finish the quilt properly for history it was hand quilted. There are over 500 hours of hand quilting in the quilt and many hands worked on it, from making the blocks to embroidery work to hand quilting.

2013 Show Quilt Finished

Thank you to all who worked on our Legacy of Quilting Show Quilt! And thanks also go to Creekside Quilting for their generous donation of fabric and supplies needed to make the quilt. Be sure to thank them when you are in the store shopping for your quilting needs!

We will be taking the quilt around to area stores once again this year. Be sure to make a trip to see it up close and in person. It is so beautiful and there are so many interesting elements to examine up close, including the aspects listed above, but also the signatures of many of the instructors who have done workshops over the years for our guild.

August 21 - 28: The Quilt Block in Valley Junction
August 28 - September 3: Quilting Connection in Ames
September 3 - 11: Adel Quilting and Dry Goods in Adel
September 11 - 17: Heart of Quilting in Valley Junction
September 17 - 29: Creekside Quilting in Clive

(Please be aware of traveling dates for the quilt and know that it may not be up and showing the entire day at that location. I will be picking it up just before noon and delivering to the next store just after noon in most cases.)

Ticket sales for the raffle drawing will be the same as last year. We will only be selling tickets at the show. This does not stop you from promoting the Show Quilt ahead of the show! Be sure to keep a picture handy on your phone or print a small picture and carry it around, sharing the details of when tickets will be sold to all those you know who love quilts. Share it on Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, and blogs if you participate in those social medias.

Of course, be sure to plan to stop by the ticket sales booth at the show and purchase tickets for yourself! Funds raised from our sales efforts help our guild tremendously! Thank you in advance for doing the best you can to get folks to the show to buy tickets!
