DMAQG is 30! Let's celebrate the fact that the 2012 President's Challenge quilts were juried into AQS Week at Grand Rapids.  Congratulations to the eight entrants. We are all very proud of you.

I hope many of you are planning and or working on the 2013 President's Challenge "What Would You Hang on a Wooden Peg?" Details are on the Guild website.

Quick note: On the Tuesday of our Guild meeting, RAGBRAI will be coming through town. The church will try to discourage folks in the area for RABGRAI from parking in their lot, but if you can carpool, please do, as that will reduce the number of spots we need.

This year is more than half over. However, we still have two huge events yet to occur!

August 27: The Women's Health Auction

Mildred and I have been busy working to get everything ready.

In order for the evening to run smoothly, we are asking that each basket, box, or item have two (2) cards with a description of the item or items, the name of the person or group making the donation, and an approximate value.

One card will stay with the donated item and the second card will be given to the reader, then the auctioneer, then the scribes, and finally the bankers.

As you or your group finish your auction contribution, please take a photo and send it to our newsletter editor. We want to display these photos in our August newsletter and build interest.

Thank you for your help.

October 2 thru 5: AQS Quilt Week & DMAQG Quilt Show

Please read all the information provided by the Quilt Show Committee. It is important!

Remember, entry forms for the DMAQG show must be submitted no later than 11:59 p.m. July 23, 2013.

Take time to create. Quilts for the August Auction, the Quilt Show, Community Service, the President's Challenge, and for yourself and family. You don't have to do it all, but at least do some.

Small Groups

At the last Newcomers meeting four or five ladies stayed behind and were in the process of forming a small group. I am not sure what name they have chosen but they looked like they were having a good time getting organized. Good luck ladies and make sure you turn in a small group sheet. I believe this will now bring us up to 39 small groups within the Des Moines Guild.

Small groups often work behind the scenes of many activities within the Guild, such as, the charity auction and the quilt show. Many hands make a big task smaller.

See you soon,

"Our Quilting Legacy" Quilt Show
October 2-5, 2013

Quilt Show Entries

Thanks everyone for entering your quilts in our October show.  Activity has picked up this past week - we have our own Rush Week going on right now!  You can still enter until midnight on July 23rd.  This deadline allows us to compile the quilt information printed in the AQS show booklet, plus prepare entry tags and plan for judging and display space.

Please review the definitions page to determine what categories to use for your quilt entries.  Remember that we have a new category for your "First Entry Into Our DMAQG Quilt Show."  We also have categories for stationary quilting (home sewing machine) and track quilting (mid-arm or long-arm machine), in addition to hand quilting.

You can enter your quilts online with our easy-to-use online form.  A few paper forms will be made available at the July 23rd Guild meetings for those without computers or printers.

Quilt Drop-off Information

Drop off for finished quilts:
  • September 20th - 26th for judged quilts.  Quilts are to be dropped off at Creekside Quilting during regular business hours.
  • September 20th - 29th for non-judged quilts.  Non-judged quilts are to be delivered to The Quilt Block during regular business hours.

All quilts need to be placed in a pillowcase.  The Guild has pillowcases for you to use and will be available for pickup at the September 24th Guild meetings or at the quilt shops during the drop off dates.   Note--we do not return pillowcases to you so do not use one that you want back.

Quilt Sleeve - Required

Each quilt entry is required to have a 4" sleeve attached for proper hanging.  You can find directions for making and attaching a sleeve on the Guild's website OR check with your local quilt shop for a sleeve product you can purchase.

Volunteer Sign-up
We told you last month that volunteer sign-up would start at the July meeting.  Well---AQS had a change in personnel this month so we do not know what their volunteer needs will be. We hope to be ready for our sign-up by Tuesday's Guild meeting.  Please stay tuned (and flexible)!

2013 Show Quilt

Our show quilt is still a work in progress.  As you all know hand quilting takes a lot of time and the ladies working on our quilt deserve our utmost thanks.  As with generations past, these quilters have formed a tight bond and are very proud of their work.  If they are not satisfied with the amount of quilting in our show quilt, it will not be entered into the Iowa State Fair competition.  We will let you know if it is finished in time for the Fair.

October is getting closer and closer.  We can't wait to see everyone's beautiful work.  As you prepare your quilt entries, premie quilts, little quilts, etc., please also remember to encourage others to attend the show.  Good attendance is beneficial to our Guild as well as to AQS .

Happy Quilting!

Silent Auction
2013 Quilt Show

2013 is going to be another big year for "Little Quilts and More". Last year was very successful and we know this year will be even bigger and better!

The changes we made last year proved to be popular with our members and especially for those bidding on items. We increased the size of little quilts to 24 " per side or a total of four sides equaling 96". In addition to little quilts, we added bags, totes and purses.

Please remember that many of our pieces are mailed out at the close of the show. So anything you make must be able to be folded up and MUST fit one of the several post office "if it fits, it ships" boxes.

Like every other year, the guild depends on the generosity, great skill and creativity of our members to make outstanding pieces that we offer for sale at our show. These quilted objects are a main source of income for our guild. So, once again we are asking for your help in contributing to the success of our quilt show by making a little quilt, a bag, tote or purse for the silent auction.

Please contact me , Leigh Lussie, at 276-0041 or leighlussie@hotmail.com with questions.

July: Barbara Shapel

 barbarashapel.com

Since learning to quilt in 1993, Barbara Shapel has focused exclusively on fiber art. As her skills grew, so did her confidence in her ability to create unique, non-traditional designs. Today she enjoys the challenge of integrating the quilting line and making it an important part of the overall design of a piece. She also works to create two-sided quilts where the back is a reflection of the front and offers the viewer a different perspective of the same piece.

Barbara is an award winning quilter, having won Best of Show in the first juried quilt show she ever entered. Her work is in many private collections and has appeared at a number of shows and locations.

She shows several different ways to create two-sided work and defines how each is done. The audience is encouraged to participate with questions and comments. The program will include much of her work as well as slides of several of her other award winning quilts.

Workshops

Art of Machine Quilting -- View Supply List

In this beginning level quilting workshop, students will learn proper basting techniques, which machine needles to use with specific thread, and the differences between the various quilting threads that are currently on the market. We will then work on a practice sampler and learn how to stitch over a dozen free-motion quilting stitches.

Thursday, July 25, 2013 -- 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Spotted Owl

Students will practice the thread painting stitches Barbara uses all the time to add depth and dimension to her fiber art pieces. Topics to be covered include what thread to use and when, the order of quilting, using a hoop, outlining, machine needles, and transferring images to fabric.

Members Helping Members

During the June afternoon meeting, a lady asked if anyone knew where you could get train fabric.

One of our members, Kathy Stevens, reports seeing some train fabric by Timeless Treasures at Quilters Cupboard in Ankeny.
