July: Barbara Shapel

 barbarashapel.com

Since learning to quilt in 1993, Barbara Shapel has focused exclusively on fiber art. As her skills grew, so did her confidence in her ability to create unique, non-traditional designs. Today she enjoys the challenge of integrating the quilting line and making it an important part of the overall design of a piece. She also works to create two-sided quilts where the back is a reflection of the front and offers the viewer a different perspective of the same piece.

Barbara is an award winning quilter, having won Best of Show in the first juried quilt show she ever entered. Her work is in many private collections and has appeared at a number of shows and locations.

Programs

Tuesday, July 23, 2013

West Des Moines United Methodist Church

8th & Grand, West Des Moines

1:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.: Thread Duets: Looking at Quilts from Both Sides

This fun and informative lecture shows where Barbara started her quilting journey with a sampler quilt. From there, it progresses to her two-sided art quilts and most recent work. She shows several different ways to create two-sided work and defines how each is done. The audience is encouraged to participate with questions and comments. The program will include much of her work as well as slides of several of her other award winning quilts.

Workshops

Wednesday, July 24, 2013 -- 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Art of Machine Quilting -- View Supply List

In this beginning level quilting workshop, students will learn proper basting techniques, which machine needles to use with specific thread, and the differences between the various quilting threads that are currently on the market. We will then work on a practice sampler and learn how to stitch over a dozen free-motion quilting stitches.

Thursday, July 25, 2013 -- 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Spotted Owl

Students will practice the thread painting stitches Barbara uses all the time to add depth and dimension to her fiber art pieces. Topics to be covered include what thread to use and when, the order of quilting, using a hoop, outlining, machine needles, and transferring images to fabric.

Registration and location information for these workshops appears in the article "2013 Workshops" below.

Newcomers
Newcomers Meeting

Can you believe it's July! Only four more Newcomers meetings this year. Remember, if you are a new member of the Des Moines Area Quilters Guild you are invited to meet with other newcomers on the third Tuesday of the month. We learn about the different Guild offices and committees that keep this great group going.  Plus we have a different guest speaker every month who shares her quilting expertise and tips with us.

On July 16th our Recording Secretary, Barbara Hines, will tell us about her duties. Our guest speaker will be Angela Lawrence. Angela, a multi-talented quilter, will present the topic, "Embellishments:  An Important Design Element for a Quilt."

Join us on the 16th at 6:30pm at the Urbandale Library, Room B, 3520 86th, Urbandale, Iowa.

Don't forget your name tag!  It's especially important to wear it during our regular monthly Guild meetings - you won't want to miss out on any of the door prizes!

Please remember no outside food or drink is allowed in the library.

Future
2013 Workshops

The summer is fairly flying away! I still have projects to complete from every one of our speakers this year and plans for projects yet to be started for our own quilt show!

Sue Cleveland was so inspiring. I wonder how many quilts we will see in the coming months that include piping and prairie points.

There are still a few openings in both of Barbara Shapel's workshops. I'm hoping to learn more about thread art, as well as how to quilt some of those art quilts I want to create.
