Greetings!
DMAQG is 30! Let's Celebrate!
It is spring! No, it is still winter. Daffodils and tulips were buried in the snow and shivering in the wind. Please let it be spring.
I missed seeing all of you at the April general meeting. However, I was busy in Paducah. That Tuesday morning over 20 members of the DMAQG helped AQS hang quilts. AQS very pleased with how quickly and professionally we handled the task. The show opened on Wednesday and was fabulous. I did not know there were so many fabrics and tools that I did not have and truly needed.
Rachel Clark will be here in May. I have signed up for her Wednesday class. Be good to yourself, take a class or two. You will be glad you did.
We will be celebrating our founding all year. Let's celebrate by creating lots of quilts.
In order to dress right for this year long party are giving you a chance to order 30th anniversary shirts. Samples and order forms will be available at the general meetings. You may also download an order form from our website. Let's show our DMAQG pride.
Again, I remind you that we are looking for any information that you may have regarding our history. Our goal is to update our history files and have them accessible to all on the website.
Take time to create. Quilts for the August Auction, the Quilt Show, Community Service, the President's Challenge, and for yourself and family. You don't have to do it all but at least do some. Peggy KirkPresident |

Small Groups
In April I received an update on a small group, the Waukee Needles and Threads. Four of the ladies belong to the DesMoines Area Quilt Guild, but they also have 27 other ladies in their group. "Ladies you need to do some sweet talking to get those 27 other members of your small group to join our Guild!"
We now have 38 registered small groups. Two people can start a small group and then add as many other members as you want.
Don't forget to order a 30th Anniversary shirt. I feel alot of pride in the Guild when I wear mine.
Hopefully, by the time you read this, Mother Nature will have her head on straight and we will have spring weather.

The lucky winners for the March meetings were Marilyn Daley and Susan Wedewer. Remember to wear your name tag and we'll see you at the April meetings!

"Our Quilting Legacy" Quilt Show
October 2-5, 2013
It is time to enter your quilts in this year's quilt show. You must be a current member of the DMAQG to enter a quilt. The deadline for entries is July 23, 3013--which coincides with our July meeting date.
Please review the definitions page to determine which categories to use for your quilt entries.
Please note a couple of changes on our definitions page. We now have the options of Hand Quilting in addition to Stationary Machine Quilting (your home sewing machine) and Track Machine Quilting (long-arm). Also, in addition to 1st, 2nd, 3rd and Honorable Mention ribbons in each category we will have Best Bed-size Quilt, Best Wall Quilt, Best Hand Quilting, Best Machine (stationary) Quilting, Best Machine (long-arm) Quilting and Judge's Choice.
We hope you will be comfortable entering your quilts on-line. Entry forms will also be available at the May, June, and July Guild meetings. Quilt drop-off information will be available next month so. Watch for details.
We look forward to seeing your quilting talents, as do others who attend this AQS quilt show. We receive many positive comments about our DMAQG show. For those of you new to our Guild-- show attendance is around 20,000 and has been even higher in some years. Thanks in advance for entering your quilts in our show. YOU make our show successful!
We hope you are also working on your small treasures for the show. Revenue received from the small treasures silent auction, baggage check, and the show quilt allows our Guild to bring in many national speakers throughout the year and allows the Guild to meet our mission for continuing education.
So mark your calendars for October 2-5, 2013. Start telling your family and friends to attend this great show!

Silent Auction
2013 Quilt Show
2013 is going to be another big year for "Little Quilts and More". Last year was very successful and we know this year will be even bigger and better!
The changes we made last year proved to be popular with our members and especially for those bidding on items. We increased the size of little quilts to 24 " per side or a total of four sides equaling 96". In addition to little quilts, we added bags, totes and purses.
Please remember that many of our pieces are mailed out at the close of the show. So anything you make must be able to be folded up and MUST fit one of the several post office "if it fits, it ships" boxes.
Like every other year, the guild depends on the generosity, great skill and creativity of our members to make outstanding pieces that we offer for sale at our show. These quilted objects are a main source of income for our guild. So, once again we are asking for your help in contributing to the success of our quilt show by making a little quilt, a bag, tote or purse for the silent auction.
Please contact me , Leigh Lussie, at 276-0041 or leighlussie@hotmail.com with questions.

Special Exhibit at the Quilt Show
Following the theme of the Quilt Show this year, we are looking for quilts for a special exhibit that would be displayed together representing a "Family Legacy." We know many of you are just one link in a chain of family quilters and we would like to showcase your family's quilting lineage.
Please email me a short synopsis of you, your family members, and the quilts or quilted items that we could display within our exhibit. Submissions are due by June 1, 2013. Specifics regarding your items and drop off information will come at a later date.
If you would like to participate in the "Family Legacy" exhibit or would like additional information, contact Jill Reber, jillreber@yahoo.com or 515-999-2746.

2013 Show Quilt - Part 4
After winning the American Revolutionary War our country had the time, ability, and resources to join the Industrial Revolution. Both thread and fabric became more available and affordable. The hand quilting took on a new flare with the intricate work of feathers and wreaths. We have added a border of trapunto feathers to honor those who went the extra miles to make their work a piece of art. Lynn Witzenburg helped us do it with a modern technique using wash away thread. Now the quilt is in a frame and being hand quilted as it would have been during this Golden Age of Quilting, as well as thirty years ago when our guild began. You will want to join us at least once to be part of this American tradition. ( MargeQuilts@icloud.com or 515-778-5231)
1800 - 1825 is considered the Golden Age of Quilting. The gradual departure from cutting up floral fabric to make arrangements on cloth is also in this time period. Ladies began a more stylized floral arrangement. These were done with solids or the small print calicos that were new to the market. The most popular method of attaching them was needleturn appliqué. We sought out a group of appliquers in our guild to add this technique to our quilt. Thank-yous to Angela Lawrence, Deb Kimball, Julee Prose, Linda Arndt, Mary Martin, Mary Shotwell, Nan Earll, and Sharon Meisenheimer.
