Month
April: Pat Sloan

Pat Sloan has been creating things her whole life, but didn't get serious about quilting until 1992. She has gone on to design patterns and fabric, author at least 30 books, and write a daily blog (www.patsloan.typepad.com).  Every Monday at 3:00 p.m. she hosts an internet radio talk show (www.allpeoplequilt.com/radio) sponsored by American Patchwork & Quilting. Her favorite quilting style is whimsical folk art appliqué.

1:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.: Quilting with Expresso

Pat's fun, fast moving, and very lively slide presentation takes you from her "First First Quilt" to her latest and greatest adventures in quilting. Along the way you'll learn some great tips to faster quilting, learn how she does her appliqué, figure out what it means to work in series (it's good!), and find out where she is on the Internet so you can hang out with her!

Pat Sloan's Workshops

Tidbits of Handwork -- View Supply List

This handwork class will show you different ways to approach relaxed appliqué. Add a bit of wool to the project, big stitch it as she shows you how 'thread matters,' and then end the project with a running stitch binding technique.

Thursday, April 25,2013 -- 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Easy Machine Appliqué -- View Supply List

Learn all of Pat's tips for making soft fusible appliqué! In class you will create a sample to test your stitching. She walks you through each step of the appliqué process, from cutting to getting a great size blanket stitch on your machine.

Newcomers
Newcomers Meeting

Welcome to the Des Moines Area Quilt Guild Newcomers. Although the Guild was formed in 1983, it was not until 1999 that the Newcomers group was formed to help new members learn more about how the Guild functions.

Newcomers is open to Guild members who have belonged to the Guild less than one year. The meetings are held the third Tuesday of the month, in Room B of the Urbandale Library at 3520 86th in Urbandale, from 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.

I welcome you to attend the meeting on April 16th. The 2013 Quilt Show co-chairs, Pat Hjelmeland and Mary Martin, will tell with us what it takes to put on our wonderful Des Moines Area Quilt Show.  Pat Hjelmeland will then present the program, "How to Finish Your Quilt." She will share her tips and answer your questions about bindings, sleeves, and labels.

Don't forget - bring a quilt for show and tell. Please remember no outside food or drink is allowed in the library.

The weather will be warmer, the sun will still be shining, and the birds will be singing, so join us at the Newcomers meeting on April 16th!

Vice President

Future
Future 2013 Workshops

Pat Sloan was one of the first celebrity quilters I discovered on Facebook several years ago. When I found her internet radio show, I began to save the podcasts to my phone so I could listen while I walked on the treadmill. Not only did I enjoy Pat's witty sense of humor, I also got the inside scoop on other quilters as she chatted with them.

I can't wait to actually meet this dynamo in person! I'm sure she will be every bit as fun and whimsical as her quilts. We still have plenty of space available in both workshops, so grab a friend and plan to attend one!

P.S. Under consideration for Rachel Clark's workshop... a Seminole piecing technique project instead of the Monster Purse. Anybody have a preference?

Deb York
Program Chair

Special Group Meetings

These small groups welcome any member of the Des Moines Area Quilters Guild who wants to drop in at as many or as few of their meetings as one would like.
TAG: The Appliqué Group

The Appliqué Group meets the third Tuesday of every month at the Quilt Block at 10:00 a.m. Anyone interested in hand or machine appliqué is welcome. This is a great meeting for people who want to learn more because we have a good range of appliqué-ers from new to very experienced.

If you have any questions, please contact Donna Horn at donnasartquilts@msn.com.
Evening Appliqué Society

If appliqué is your passion join The Evening Appliqué Group at The Quilt Block in Valley Junction. The group meets on the first Thursday of the month at 6:30 p.m. We have members with pieces from basic to Blue Ribbon who meet to share tips and techniques.
