Greetings!

DMAQG is 30!

For the February general meeting we planned a birthday party complete with cake and ice cream. The problem was that Mother Nature planned a party of her own, and her white stuff was not ice cream! I stomped my feet and shook my fist to no avail. Mother Nature would have her way.

The speaker was in town, the hall was rented, and the cake and ice cream were delivered. We decided to forge ahead and hold the meeting and party. Afternoon attendance was 57 and the evening was 27. Those of us who were able to make it enjoyed wonderful presentations by our speaker, Terry White ,and then gorged ourselves with cake.

I am so glad that we are able to send out email blast on occasion such as this!

We will be celebrating our founding all year. Whereas the first meeting was in February 1983, the Guild was incorporated in October 1983. So, party on!

In order to dress right for this year long party we are giving you a chance to order 30th anniversary shirts. Samples and order forms will be available at the March meetings. Look for the order form online soon.

Again, I remind you that we are looking for  any information that you may have regarding our history. Our goal is to update our history files and have the information accessible to all on the website.

May the weather in March be kind.

Small Groups

I have heard a rumor that there are ladies in the Des Moines Area Quilters Guild who would like to form a "small group." Small groups are a very effective way for Guild members to connect with one another.

"What do I need to do?" you ask. Well, you've come to the right person to find out.

There are two forms available on the Guild's website. One is the Individual Seeking Small Group Form which was created to give the Guild information needed to help the member looking for a group or to start their own group.

The second form is for established small groups and is titled, oddly enough, Small Group Form. This form tells us who is in the group, what they do, where they meet, and what activities they would like to help serve the Guild, etc.

As of March 2013, the Guild has 37 registered small groups. At this time 12 groups are accepting new members.

Come see me at the back of the church prior to Guild meetings to obtain or turn in small group forms. I also have a list of the current small group names. Feel free to get as creative as you like with naming your group as long as the name is not already taken.

Membership Directory

The publication of this year's annual membership directory has been moved to April 1,  2013. Because of the low attendance at the February Guild meeting (due to bad weather) it was decided to allow members to pay their membership by March 26, 2013.  Any membership renewal or new membership received at the March 26th Guild meeting or at the PO Box by March 26th will be included in this year's directory.

Our membership dues help provide the funds for our meetings, lecturers, and classes. We look forward to receiving your membership renewal on or before March 26th.

New and renewed memberships will still be accepted after March 26th, but you will have missed your chance to appear in the directory.

Directors at Large News

In honor of the Guild's 30th Birthday, the Guild is awarding $30 Gift Certificates. Each meeting afternoon and evening this year, a gift certificate will be awarded to one member wearing their name tag. The gift certificate may used towards workshops or retreats! The lucky winners who ventured out into the snowy weather to February meetings were Sandy Lanning and Judy Cramer. So remember to wear your name tag and we'll see you at the March meetings!

Our Spring Thing Quilt Retreat

Going once, going twice,

Please, it's disrupting our lifes.

Our "Spring Thing" Quilt Retreat

is just three weeks away,

And we need to know who's coming

and who's to pay.

So please help our emotions,

cause we tried our promotions,

But we need to see our friends

so our hearts won't rend.

Just sign up soon

and end our strife.

Oh, the great sorrow my poetry must bring but with the "c...." winter storm the day of the February meetings, we missed your registration for the retreat. And as you know from the last entreaty I promised more of the same if we didn't hear from you. We hope to see you and your registration at the March meetings

"Our Quilting Legacy"
2013 Quilt Show News

The quilt show committee is currently planning special exhibits for our October quilt show. Information about these special exhibits will be provided over the next few months.

During our January Guild meeting we told you about a quilt show exhibit that would showcase all of your charity work. We have thought about this further and now realize that this exhibit would have been too large.

This year the charity quilt focus will be on preemie quilts which will be donated to Des Moines area hospitals. The minimum size for a preemie quilt is 30"x30", with 30"x36" being the perfect size. The quilts should be no larger than 36"x42".

Can you help us out by making a preemie quilt? We'd love to provide quilts to as many Des Moines area babies as we can and showcase the charitable works of our Guild members.

Thank you!

2013 Show Quilt - Part 2

Once women started cutting up fabric and sewing it back together, bed coverings would never be the same. The English loved geometric shapes. Hexagons were one of the shapes they used. It could be the ladies were inspired by the beautiful tile floors in the great public buildings of the time. They would cut heavy paper to the desired geometric shape, baste pieces of fabric to them, and whipstitch the shapes together. Today we call the process English Paper Piecing (EPP).

The English Paper Piecing technique crossed the ocean and was used by the colonists. It has since had many revivals. "Hexies" are a current fad in our quilt making, as it was in the 1930s. Each revival brings a new twist to the technique. An example would be the Grandmother's Flower Garden of the 1930s.

The first frame of our legacy quilt will honor English Paper Piecing. When the rebellious colonial women started skipping the card stock basting and just began sewing pieces of fabric together, the English piecers were mortified! We will honor these rebels in another frame to the quilt!

Thank you to the members of the Guild who helped with the EPP: Jan Hetzel, Judy Proksa, Kerri Hill-Elliot, Linda Montet, Mary Miller, and Virginia Berger.

Calling All Hand Quilters!

If you want a quilt that symbolizes the "Legacy of Quilting," it must include ladies sitting around a quilt and doing hand quilting. The current plan is to have the Show Quilt in a quilting frame in April.

If you would be willing to do a little or a lot of the hand quilting please contact me! Marge Pearson, margequilts@icloud.com or 515-778-5231.

Community Giving

The turnout for the Community Giving Sewing Day was light, but the ladies who came were exceptional! Three tops were started. Pillowcase kits and bats were cut.
