Greetings!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY

DMAQG is 30 years old!

Thirty years ago this month, 60 plus quilters met and formed Des Moines Area Quilters Guild, Inc. To celebrate the occasion, we are throwing a birthday party. Come to the Friendship Room after our meetings this month for cake and ice cream.

Regarding the DMAQG history, if you have any documents or information, please let me know and send a copy if you can. We want to update our history files and have it accessible to all of us on the website. Currently, we have most, but not all, of the Guild newsletters and we don't have original membership lists.

Last month, I attended Debbie Caffrey's "Mystery Quilt" workshop. She was a fantastic instructor and I had wonderful time sewing with my quilting friends. As soon as I finish quilting it, I will have a beautiful quilt to snuggle up with on my sofa. I strongly encourage all of you to attend at least one workshop this year. I plan to go to at least three more.

You may have noticed already that we have a Facebook page--new this month. If you are on Facebook, please like our page and join the conversations.

If you aren't on Facebook, don't worry. All Guild news and program information will appear in the newsletter and on the website, and be announced at meetings, as it always has. Our Facebook page is just one more way (like a table in the Friendship Room) for members to chat and future members to find us.

Small
Small Groups

Welcome to the new small group "Material Girls" - Deb Kerns, Carol Wilson, Denise Peterson, Jackie Kelley, and Kay Modde.

Small groups are one of the most effective ways for members of the Guild to connect with one another. There are now 37 small groups registered within the Guild. Only 11 of those groups have room to welcome new members. What a great opportunity to start your own group! If you are looking to form a new small group or would like to join a small group, complete the "Individual Seeking Small Group Form."  We will use the information to help match you up with a small group or with others wanting to form a small group.

We are asking all small groups to please fill out the "Small Group Form." The form has been revised to give us better information regarding your small group.

Both small group forms are available at regular guild and newcomers meetings, and online. Forms can be returned to Mildred Agena at any Guild meeting. The forms can also be emailed to Mildred at uagena@netins.net or mailed to P.O Box 25070, West Des Moines, IA  50265.

If your group is no longer active, please let Mildred know. There are six groups that need to update their status: Central Iowa Textile Artists, Cut-ups, Cutting Edge, Fiber Artists of Greater Des Moines, First Monday Appliqué, and Pedal Pushers.

Thank you for helping us to serve you better.

Retreat
Our Spring Thing Quilt Retreat

Roses are red,

Violets are blue

If you don't come to Retreat

I will boo hoo!

You need to know that my quilting skills are much better than my poetry skills. So if you don't wish to be subjected to more poetry, send in your "Our Spring Thing" Quilt Retreat registration form before the publication of the March newsletter. Then I can quilt and not compose my lyrical verse, and you won't need to read it.

The bestest reason for coming to retreat is so that your projects for the State Fair and the Quilt Show will be finished before summertime. You won't have that hot quilt on your lap when it is 103 degrees outside. You instead will be sitting on a lawn chair, next to the sprinkler with a tall, cool drink in your hand. You will be able to daydream new quilt ideas for 2014 instead of worrying about finishing quilts this year.

2013 Show Quilt: Legacy of Quilting

Today's quilters cannot but have a great deal of respect for the women who went ga-ga when they were first introduced to hand-painted, printed textiles coming from India. (Text books say it was all about the spices!)  Those women who could not afford the 30 yards it would take to dress their bed with a spread and draperies of it, became very creative and began what is known as Broderie Perse. They purchased a small piece of the print, later reproduced in France and England, and cut it up!

We honor these women with the center of our Legacy Quilt. We are using a reproduction of an 1810 Chintz  found in the Virginia Quilt Museum. It is a tree of life theme that was so popular at that time.

Tree of Life Print

Each month I will share with you the progress of our show quilt and how it celebrates our theme, "Legacy of Quilting."

Education Outreach

Your Education Outreach Committee is hard at work getting ready for our summer activities. These projects are important as we work toward our goal of teaching people about quilting.

A big THANK YOU to all who gave 2 yard cuts for the outgoing officers.  Many yards of fabric for backs have been donated. Creekside Quilting and Quilting Connection have both given fabric to be used for both the State Fair and the Kids Classes.

Nancy DeLay and the Indianola Guild have had a retreat and made kits for 71 bigger quilts for older kids. These are ready to quilt and will be welcomed at the State Fair Sew-In. Many other DMAQG members have been cutting strips for the Kids Classes and the fair and making the many yards of binding needed for the quilts. Each meeting we will have bags of fabric available for cutting into 5 inch strips or 2 ¾ inch wide binding.

The dates for the Kids Classes are set and it is not too early to volunteer to help. The classes at the West Des Moines Library are June 17th (Monday) and June 18th (Tuesday). The classes at the Pleasant Hill Library are July 25th (Thursday) and July 26th (Friday). A willingness to help a child and a love of quilting are the skills needed to help kids 10 years old and up create a quilt.

The State Fair this year is August 8th through 18th. We need 5 associates each day to help the fair goers make quilts for children's charities around the state.

To get information or to sign up for any of these opportunities, contact Sharon Meisenheimer at Rmeis@aol.com or 515-986-1145.

RetiringRetiring Board Members Thank You

I would like to thank everyone for the wonderful Amish fabric fat quarters. I can't wait to use them in my next project. It was fun serving on the Board and I look forward to my duties as 2014 Quilt Show Co-chair.

2012 Community Giving Co-chair

Dear Guild members, thank you so much for your beautiful and generous gift of fabrics. I will pass these on to the education programs to be used in their children's quiltmaking. I had a wonderful time serving on the board and meeting and working with so many talented women. Also, thanks to all who kept me in your thoughts and prayers as I recover from my cancer... I am slowly but surely getting better each day. Hopefully I will soon be back in the "quilting circle."
