February: Terry White

threadpaint.com

Terry White knew from a young age that she would someday design needlework and publish a book. Not only has she met that goal, she has exceeded it! Over the years Terry has been published in over 50 magazines, books, and calendars, and has also designed numerous machine embroidery collections. She has appeared on several television programs, and her work has won many awards.

Programs

Tuesday, February 26, 2013

West Des Moines United Methodist Church

8th & Grand, West Des Moines

1:00 p.m.: Threadpainting/Designing by Thread

Terry presents her thread painted quilts to illustrate design ideas and techniques. Different effects require different approaches whether it be in thread color or weight, an interesting mix of materials, or a special design technique. Each quilt has a unique design story and process.

7:00 p.m.: Embellishmentality: Simple Techniques for a Big Impact

Re-purposing, making use of discards & UFOs, as well as making use of the "too many" beautiful things available to us today, all find a place in Terry's work. She will explain her inspirations, techniques, and methods by showing examples in her quilts.

Newcomers

Newcomers Meeting

Welcome to the Des Moines Area Quilters Guild Newcomers Group. The group was formed in 1999 for the purposes of allowing new members to learn how the Guild functions, to meet other new members in a smaller setting, and to learn how to form or join a "small group." Newcomers is open to members who have belonged to the Guild for less than one year.

The meetings are held the third Tuesday of the month in Room B of the Urbandale Library at 3520 - 86th St in Urbandale.

Please attend the meeting on Tuesday, February 19, 2013 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Deb York will talk about her responsibilities as Program Chair. I will present a short program titled, "Thread Therapy."

Please bring one or two of your quilts for show and tell. Are you having problems with a quilt? Bring it and we'll discuss solutions. Hopefully the weather will cooperate and all newcomers can break out of the "cabin" to join us.

F.Y.I. The library does not allow outside food or drink in the meeting room.

Future
2013 Workshops

I hope everyone enjoyed Debbie Caffrey's lectures and workshops in January. I think a few 'Mystery" quilts may even make it to show and tell in the near future. If you couldn't attend one of her workshops, be sure to check out the copy of her newest book Surprise Yourself which she donated to our library.

We're switching gears this month to learn about how to embellish our quilts. Terry White, our guest speaker for February, has been working with embellishments as long as she has been stitching. Many of her techniques were developed when she was doing hand work, but she has re-invented them for machine work. If you've ever admired those "Best of Show" quilts, here is your chance to get some basic instruction on how to create your own works of art.

P.S. If you are planning to sign up for Maria Elkins' Fused Portraits workshop in March, do it soon! There are still several openings, but students need to email Maria a picture two weeks prior to the class so she can prepare it before the workshop.
