Greetings!
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
The hustle and bustle of the holiday season is in our rearview mirror. It is now time to focus ahead to 2013. I am looking forward to working with all the wonderful women on the board who have agreed to serve you, the Des Moines Area Quilters Guild, this year.
In February 1983, quilt shop owner and teacher, Mike Wigg and more than 60 quilters met and formed the DMAQG. Therefore, in February, we are going to have a 30th Birthday Party. Be sure to join everyone in the Friendship Room after the meeting for cake and ice cream.
Be sure to take advantage of the offerings of our guild. Come to the general meetings and learn new ideas from the various speakers that Deb York has lined up for us. Then, resolve to treat yourself to at least one workshop this year. I have already signed up for three classes and I will probably sign up for more. Please join fellow quilters for a day of learning and fun.
Other opportunities this year will be show and tell at each monthly meeting, the spring and fall retreats, Community Giving, the Annual Charity Auction for Women's Health Issues in August, the Quilt Show in October, and the 2013 President's Challenge.
As you can see, there is plenty to keep us all in stitches. So, let's get busy and have some fun.. Peggy Kirk President |

President's Challenge
What Would You Hang on a Wooden Peg?
Who are you? Think of your occupation (doctor, nurse, teacher, butcher, baker, candlestick maker), your sport activity (swimming, skiing, hiking, horseback riding), or your hobby (photography, gardening). What item would illustrate an aspect of your life?
Hang this one (1) item on one (1) wooden peg. The peg may be at your place of work, mudroom, barn, or wherever one finds a peg. You may put other related items on a shelf, on the floor, or both.
Theme: What Would You Hang on a Wooden Peg?
Size: 30" wide by 45" tall (Yes, we are going vertical this year!)
Scale: 50%
The wooden peg should be recognizably visible even with your item hanging on it.
Use techniques and embellishments of your choosing.
Be creative and have fun.
Be sure your quilt is finished by December 7th, 2013.

Small Groups
At this time we have 36 small groups registered within the Guild. Of this number, 11 have indicated that they are seeking new members. What a good opportunity to gather a few quilting friends to start your own small group! Forms for small groups and individuals seeking a small group may be obtained on the website or at Guild and Newcomers meetings.
There are 6 groups that need to update their small group information: Central Iowa Textile Artists, Cut-ups, Cutting Edge, Fiber Artists of Greater Des Moines, First Monday Applique, and Pedal Pushers. If your group is no longer active please let me know and I will remove your name from our lists.

Grateful Our Guild Has Retreats
Today I blessed myself with a day to sew, so I head downstairs and choose a project. I begin to piece and then the dog barks, I let the dog in. I return to my blissful stitching. I hear clink, clink. Dog out of water. Get up to refill. Bowl dirty so wash in sink. Dog drinks. Sink now dirty so clean it. But I am right next to washer and dryer. Change loads, might as well refill washer. Stains on shirt, treat. Dog barks, let dog out. Sink dirty from treatment, reclean sink. Sit down start sewing, but thinking of what to make for dinner. Go to freezer... and so it goes. I then wonder that evening why I didn't get any quilting done. The solution is 2013 "Spring Thing" Retreat, Thursday, April 11 through Sunday, April 14. You can stitch all day without letting the dog out, or doing the laundry, or thinking about what to make for dinner. Someone else takes care of the dog at Wesley Woods, and serves your meals. The laundry just has to wait until you get back.
Please register using the form soon to be available on our website or at the Guild meetings in January, February, and March. Terry Holt Retreat Chair

Treats for 2013 Meetings
We all enjoy the socializing after the meetings and love to have that cup of coffee or lemonade and a cookie or two. We need a few more volunteers! January evening is still open as well as both September and October for afternoon and evening. Your group will need to plan on an average of 150 members in the afternoon and 100 in the evening. We thank you for generosity and support!

Be sure to come to as many meetings as you can this year to increase you chance of winning. One of the door prizes at each meeting will be a gift certificate good for $30 off any Guild retreat or workshop! Remember that you must be wearing a name tag to collect any door prize.

2013 Quilt Show
Well, we made it past the end of the Mayan calendar! We are still here and eager to get started with quilt show planning. It will be here before we know it.
To tie in with the 30th anniversary of our guild, our theme will be, "Our Quilting Legacy." Just think how we have grown in our quilting skills personally, and as a guild, over the years. Our local quilt shops, lecturers, relatives, and friends have all helped us along the way.
Because of the success of last year's show quilt our Board approved another show quilt for 2013. Marge Pearson has enthusiastically agreed to design this quit for us. Her design will tie back to the quilting legacy theme. A group of ladies are already working on this quilt. Please keep in mind that our church meeting site has a policy that does not permit raffles, so we will not be discussing our show quilt in the church. Look for more information about it in February and later newsletters.
At our January 22nd meeting, we will be sharing information about planned special exhibits for our October show. We hope you can enter a quilt (or two), make some silent auction little quilts, or volunteer. It takes all of us working together to make our show a success.
Hope to see you at our January meeting. If you cannot make it, more information will be found in the February newsletter.
Stay Warm,
Mary Martin and Pat Hjelmeland

Community Giving
We are both very excited to be working with Community Giving, and are looking forward to a productive year. We will be continuing to accept placemats, pillow cases, and quilt protectors during the year.
We have received two thank you notes: one from Jasper County Elderly Nutrition Services for place mates and one from Youth Emergency Services and Shelter for quilts and pillowcases. Our work for the community is certainly appreciated, so keep these projects in mind when quilting.
The Des Moines Area Quilters Guild, through Community Giving, will be working with the Preemie Project of Iowa during this next year making baby quilts. As this will be coordinated with the Quilt Show, we will be providing more information later as details develop.
Mark your calendars - Spring Community Giving Sewing Day
Our Spring Community Giving Sewing Day will be Saturday, March 16th, from 9:30 a.m. - 4:00 a.m. at the West Des Moines Library. We will meet in the Community Room on the library's main floor. Volunteers can stay all day or come and go as you need to. We suggest that you bring a sack lunch, but fast food options are available in the area.

December Tea
The Guild held its Christmas Tea on December 1, 2012, at the WDM Community Schools Learning Resource Center. The Christmas Tea serves as the Guild's annual business meeting, and at the same time provides members an opportunity to share in the friendship and fellowship of the Guild while indulging in delicious treats.
During the business portion of the tea, the Guild celebrated the accomplishments of 2012, approved amendments to Board by-laws, recognized the service of outgoing Board members, and welcomed the new 2013 Board of Directors. Members voted for their favorite 2012 President's Challenge entry depicting the theme, "A Small Blessing." The 8 entries with the most votes will be photographed and submitted to AQS with hopes of being accepted for the AQS challenge.
Thanks to all of our members who make the DMAQG the success it is today!

Renew Your Membership
If you did not already renew your membership at the December Tea or by mailing in your renewal form, your membership needs to be renewed by March 1 in order for you to be included in the Guild's membership directory. Your membership form can be renewed online -- don't forget to mail the confirmation with your payment. Forms will also be available at the January meetings.

I would like to thank everyone for the wonderful fat quarters I received at the Christmas Tea. What a nice gift! I worked with so many wonderful guild members and I look forward to just sitting in the audience in the coming year. Thank you.

Small Group Spotlight
Small groups are one of the most effective ways for members of the Guild to connect with one another. For more information, visit our dmaqg.org > Membership > Small Groups.
We will attempt to spotlight one small group each month. Look for additional small group spotlights in future issues of the newsletter. Contact Katherine Roccasecca at kariadne@mac.com or Karen Pavlik at ktpavlik1@gmail.com if your group would like to be spotlighted.
Rowdy Rippers
What can you expect from a group called Rowdy Rippers? Well, rowdiness certainly. But why "rippers"? They admit they are "not the most careful piecers."
These gals have fun at their monthly dinner gatherings before Guild meetings and at the Guild spring and fall retreats.
Anyone who has attended retreat knows about "the lamp." When Lisa Zyblicki attended her first retreat she looked around the room and thought there must be a competition for the ugliest lamp, so she picked this one up at a tag sale. If there actually were a competition, this lamp would win: ship's wheel, commemorative plaque, and ship's bell, all in wood and brass, with an appropriate lampshade. The best part of this lamp is the tradition of ringing it when you have completed a project or milestone. Everyone in the room turns for an impromptu show and tell and round of applause.
The group has a serious side, too. In order to help those who lost their possessions in Hurricane Sandy, they made a quilt at the retreat last fall. They started when they arrived, completed the top, and had enough blocks left over for a second quilt.
Members of the group include Missy Godfrey, Sue Grant, Brenda LeBeau, Diane Smith, Diana Raush, Michelle Thompson, Kathy Gocke, Sarah Lusmann, Staci Burchfield, Lisa Zbylicki, and Brianne Zbylicki.

Debbie has designed over one hundred mystery quilt patterns, and most conferences she attends offer a mystery as one of her classes. Be prepared for a lot of sewing and a lot of fun! This class requires basic rotary cutting and machine piecing skills.
Registration For any workshop, you may mail in your registration form along with your registration fee to Deb York, 28187 Prospect Ave., Adel, IA 50003.
