Workshops

Hip to Be Square -- View Supply List  Caffrey - It's Hip to Be Square

Based on the book of the same name, this workshop will focus on cutting and piecing more than eight different blocks, all beginning with a stack of squares.

Using the great Method #5 technique for making half-square triangle units from Debbie's book Power Cutting, Too, learn how to make a variety of blocks including Split Nine Patch, a scrappy simple Nine Patch Autumn Leaf, a scrappy Bear's Paw, Friendship Stars, Delectable Mountains, etc. by making very simple, large (6" - 10") half-square triangle units.

Thursday, January 24, 2013 -- 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Mystery -- Supply list will be provided to registered attendees

We can't give you a photo of this one or it wouldn't be a surprise! We can tell you the name of it is "Snowbound in Valdez" and it is a perfect quilt for layer cakes, charm packs, and jelly rolls. This is a focused day of sewing, since you do all your cutting at home.

Debbie has designed over one hundred mystery quilt patterns, and most conferences she attends offer a mystery as one of her classes. Be prepared for a lot of sewing and a lot of fun! This class requires basic rotary cutting and machine piecing skills.

Registration and location information for these workshops appears in the article "2013 Workshops" below.

Newcomers
Newcomers Meeting

Welcome to the Des Moines Area Quilt Guild Newcomers group. The group was formed in 1999 for the purposes of allowing new members to learn how the Guild functions, to meet other new members in a smaller setting, and to learn how to form or join a "small group." Newcomers is open to members who have belonged to the Guild for less than one year.

The meetings will be held the third Tuesday of the month in room B of the Urbandale Library at 3520 - 86th St in Urbandale.

Please attend the meeting on Tuesday, January 15, 2013 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Peggy Kirk will talk about her responsibilities as president. Peggy will also present a short program.

Please bring one or two of your quilts for show and tell.

Future
2013 Workshops

Our first speaker of the new year may be familiar to some of you since she was one of the featured teachers at the AQS show in Des Moines last October. If you missed the chance to take one of her classes then or want to take another, now is your opportunity. Debbie Caffrey has some very interesting approaches to cutting and piecing intricate blocks that make them very simple. And don't be hesitant about the Mystery workshop on January 24th. This is always one of Debbie's most popular classes. You will come away with your choice of a lap or twin-sized quilt top after an intense day of sewing and lots of fun! You won't be disappointed, I guarantee it!

P.S. I'm looking for volunteers to help with workshop registration at Guild meetings as well as assisting our lecturers at their sales tables and providing transportation for our speakers. If interested, please send me an email at yorkcovp@aol.com. Thanks!
