Sharon is an award-winning quilter, designer, and textile artist. She is an author of three books and contributing author of many more. She has a history of more than 20 years of teaching workshops and lecturing to quilt guilds.
Her passion is to share her love of fabric with others through sharing skills, inspiring ideas, and encouraging appreciation of quilting as an art form. Specializing in creative use of color and design, she is ready to share her quilting world with you.
From childhood, learning embroidery stitches from her mother and making her first skirt in 4-H, Sharon felt a close connection to fabric. She pursued a degree in Home Economics Education, worked in the ready-made clothing industry, learned tailoring and dressmaking, and spent many years making custom home decor. When Sharon entered the quilting world, she brought with her this varied background of skills and expertise. "I love the color, the texture, and the pattern designs of fabric.
"It is exciting to drown myself in fabric and come up with different combinations. I find it a joyful challenge to see what new perspectives can be achieved."
1:00 p.m.: Off Balance and Out of Synch
Traditional quilters as well as art quilters will benefit from knowledge of balance, emphasis, and rhythm. As you increase your understanding of art principles, you can more effectively use color, line, value, and texture to turn your quilts into works of art. Sharon discusses how composition counts as she shows a collection of traditional and contemporary quilts.
7:00 p.m.: Freedom Quilting
What happens when you are shamed into cleaning your sewing studio and you are left holding the bag? The bag of miscellaneous, unused strips, that is. You can sew these colorful strips into wild and whimsical freedom blocks. Join Sharon as she introduces you to freedom quilting and shares her collection of "log cabin quilts with attitude."

NEWCOMERS MEETINGS
Welcome to all newcomers to the Des Moines Area Quilters Guild.
In 1999, Newcomers was formed for the purpose of educating new members about the workings of the Guild and to help them get acquainted with other members.
If you have been a member of the Guild for less than one year, please attend the next Newcomers meeting on Tuesday, October 16 at the Urbandale Library from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
The Corresponding Secretary, Newsletter Editor, and Website Editor will each explain their duties to the guild. Then, Emma Thomas-McGinnis will talk to us about Fabric Origami.
Remember to bring one or two of your quilts for Show & Tell. Also, please bring your completed 8 pointed star blocks.
This will be the last scheduled Newcomers meeting for 2012. Come early for socialization and small group formation.

FALL RETREAT
Get your projects ready for our Fall Retreat. It will be here before you know it. This year the dates are November 8th through the 11th. We will have two sewing rooms, good food, good friends, and lots of chocolate.
Registration forms will be available at the October Guild meetings. We also have the form on the website so you can print it off and mail it in.
We had a lot of fun at the spring retreat, so if you've never come before you really need to try it. We welcome you, and you'll be sure to make new friends.

UPCOMING 2012 WORKSHOPS
The mission of the Des Moines Area Quilters Guild is to stimulate an interest in quilts and quilt making, educating its members, and provide for the inter-change of information. (Adopted -- September 20, 2003).
Only TWO WORKSHOPS REMAIN this year!
For any workshop, you may mail in your reservation (see link to registration form) along with your workshop fee to Judy Proksa, 99 Linden Blvd., Pleasant Hill, IA 50327. We will also be taking reservations at our meetings on the fourth Tuesday of each month. If you'd like to be put on a waiting list while sending in your registration, email Judy at jproksa@yahoo.com or call her at 515-266-1054. Once your check is received you'll be added to the workshop list.

Wednesday, October 24 (9 a.m. - 4 p.m.) String Piecing 101 and Beyond. In hard times, quilters used every bit of their fabric. Today, we can use string piecing techniques to create a delightful mixture of color and pattern. Learn the basics and get creative.
Thursday, October 25 (9 a.m. - 4 p.m.) Paper Piecing by the Strip. Paper piecing is a wonderful way to make perfect points but can be confusing. How much fabric should be allowed? Where should it be placed? In this class, you will learn the trick of using fabric strips to conquer this useful technique.

SPECIAL GROUP MEETINGS
TAG--The Applique Group
The TAG group meets the third Tuesday of every month at the Quilt Block at 10:00 a.m. Anyone interested in hand or machine appliqué is welcome. We are a very informal group, and usually talk and sew and then have show and tell. Some go to The General Store after the meeting for lunch. This is a great meeting for people who want to learn more because we have a good range of appliquers from new to very experienced.

Evening Applique Society
DATE: The 1st Thursday of the Month
TIME: Beginning at 6:30 p.m.
PLACE: The Quilt Block in Valley Junction
If appliqué is your passion, either by hand or machine, gather your bags and items, we are regrouping again. You can be a Blue Ribbon winner or just starting out with a project and learning the techniques of the trade... all are welcome.
Feel free to bring snacks or teas to share. Also bring Show & Tell, UFOs, or anything you may need help with or want to share.
The group meets at The Quilt Block on the 1st Thursday of the month @ 6:30 p.m. until... Mary Miller (or one of her staff members) is kind enough to stay until we are ready to leave. If you forget anything, the shop with gladly open the register for sales of needed or must have products, so remember to bring your tucked back cash or credit cards.

1800s Quilt Study Group
The 1800s Study Group will hold their next meeting on Thursday, October 25th at 6:30 p.m. at the Quilt Block in Valley Junction. Virginia and Marge will give a report on the recent American Quilt Study Group Meeting and there will be a discussion on the future of this group.
