Annual Wild Goose Chase Women's Bike Tour

Wild Goose Chase Enjoy a Weekend of Cycling Fun!
The Wild Goose Chase Women's Bike Tour on May 14 and 15 takes cyclists through Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge. It is an important annual fundraising event for the Friends of Blackwater and helps us support the Refuge. It starts and ends at Cambridge South Dorchester High School on Route 16.

If you would like to support the event, we need a few more volunteers (no experience needed), specifically at registration on Saturday afternoon from 2-5pm, or on Sunday morning from 7-11am, or serving at one of the route rest stops on Sunday from about 8am until 1 or 2pm. It's a great way to meet some fellow Friends of Blackwater. If you're interested in helping, please contact Cathy Beise ASAP at wildgooseride@gmail.com or 443-523-6292.

And it's not too late to register for the ride yourself!
Learn more about the event and see a video of past rides on our Friends' website, and please like/share us on Facebook.

Technical Problems at the Blackwater Osprey Cam

Osprey Cam Nest Three Eggs in the Nest
We currently have three eggs on the Blackwater NWR Osprey Cam, which is exciting news. The bad news is that our camera has malfunctioned and we cannot visit the nest to repair it because it might spook the parents off the eggs. We have been advised by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service that we cannot visit the nest until the chicks have fledged, so we won't be able to fix the camera until late July or early August -- assuming we have chicks in the nest.
We're sorry for this delay in bringing you the osprey family, but we're hoping the parents produce healthy chicks, so we can see them later this summer.
Proposed Changes to Deer Hunts

Comments Accepted Until May 16

Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge is proposing updates to the current Refuge hunt plan beginning with the 2016/17 hunting season and is seeking public comment on the changes that are being proposed. The current Refuge hunt plan was implemented ten years ago, and the Refuge is now proposing to expand hunting opportunities with the goal of reducing deer herd numbers. You can read more about the proposed changes on our Friends' website (PDF). Comments on the changes will be accepted until May 16, 2016.
