Annual Volunteer Session at Blackwater NWR

volunteer Become a Volunteer!
On August 15, Blackwater Refuge staff will hold an information session at the Blackwater NWR Visitor Center from 9:00am to 4:00pm (lunch provided) where attendees can learn about what the Refuge is doing to manage habitat and provide visitor services, as well as learn about volunteer opportunities. If you've always wanted to do something fun to benefit the Refuge, now is a great time to come and learn more about the many ways you can volunteer. Attendees can stay for part of the day or for the full session. Register by contacting Michele Whitbeck at Michele_Whitbeck@fws.gov. You can find more information on our Volunteer page.
Osprey Cam Chicks Fledge

2015 Osprey Cam chicks Two Chicks Doing Well
We've had a very successful season on our 2015 Blackwater NWR Osprey Cam. We recently held the annual Osprey Chick-Naming Contest, and Paula Henry of Gambrills, Maryland was our winner with the names "Flight and Feather." The chicks are now flying, and you can see them practicing their takeoff and landing skills on our Osprey Cam page.

Fall Brings the Return of Our Bird Walks
Bald eagles at Blackwater NWR As fall approaches, Blackwater NWR will begin its monthly bird walks at the Refuge. The free bird walks are led by expert birders and start at the Visitor Center. Be sure to check out our Events Calendar to find out when future bird walks are scheduled. The fall months are often the most exciting at Blackwater Refuge with large numbers of eagles and waterfowl visible as the season progresses.
