Archery Program for Kids in July

Bring Your Youngsters!
archery Starting on July 4, Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge will be offering free archery lessons with a trained instructor for youths between the ages of 7 and 16 years old. The archery program will be offered at the Blackwater NWR Visitor Center located off Key Wallace Drive. These programs will be available 10:00am-12:00pm on the following Saturdays: July 4, 11, 18, and 25. They will also be available 10:00am-12:00pm on the following Sundays: July 5, 12, 19, and 26.

All equipment will be provided and only the provided equipment will be used. Archery is an activity that anyone can learn to do, and it can teach patience and improve focus. It is also a great way to get kids involved in a fun outdoor activity. For more information, contact us at 410-901-6124.
Wild Goose Chase a Great Success

Thanks to Cyclists and Volunteers

The Wild Goose Chase, which provides funding for a variety of projects at Blackwater NWR, was held on May 16 and 17 this year. We had 350 registrants with 318 women participating in the ride. On the first day of the event, participants took advantage of touring the area on land, via self-guided bike tours, and by water, via locally rented kayaks. The cyclist dinner, held at the Elks Lodge, was well attended and all enjoyed Georgena Terry's presentation on the state-of-the-art of bicycle design. While four different bicycle routes were available, most women opted for Ride B, covering 428 miles of countryside with spectacular marsh views and ample sightings of wildlife, including herons, eagles, and turtles crossing the road. Various vendors generously provided merchandise to be raffled off at the end of the ride. The Grand Prize, a Fuji Declaration Single Speed Bicycle, was won by Grace House (pictured between Georgena Terry and Friends' president Rick Abend). Based on participant feedback, the 2015 Wild Goose Chase was deemed a success thanks to all of the riders, vendors, volunteers, and organizer, Maggie Briggs.

Osprey Cam Has Two Chicks

Two Chicks Doing Well
Osprey Cam We got off to a bumpy start this season when one of our three Osprey Cam chicks at Blackwater NWR got tangled in some nesting material and perished. But the two remaining chicks seem healthy and are growing large. Visit the Osprey Cam to see them in action.
Students Use Refuge as a Classroom

Environmental Education at Blackwater
Great blue heron In March and April, all of Dorchester County's 6th grade students visited Blackwater NWR over the course of six days to: 1) participate in a wildlife-viewing tour of the Wildlife Drive where they were taught how to use a dichotomous key to correctly identify common trees found on the Refuge, 2) learn the basics of GPS and its importance in the natural resource sciences, and 3) to join staff from Pickering Creek Audubon Center to plant marsh grasses. Approximately 395 students from three middle schools participated. Along with Refuge staff, seven volunteers and four Audubon staff helped make this year's program a success. A big THANKS go out to Refuge volunteers Cathy Beise, Beth Burgess, Cindy Burns, Sue Fischer, Stan Haddox, Suzanne Hurtt, and Betsy McCaul for their help in leading the activities. Thanks also to the Friends of Blackwater who provided funding for the transportation of the students as well as the marsh grasses that were planted.
Fishing Fun Day at Blackwater

Young Anglers Show Their Stuff
Fishing Fun Day Sixty-two young anglers took to the water on Saturday, June 7, as part of the Refuge's Youth Fishing Fun Day. In partnership with the Friends of Blackwater, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service hosted these eager anglers at Hog Range Pond. Everything from catfish, crappie, blue gill and largemouth bass were caught by the enthusiastic participants. The Refuge provided kids with fishing poles and bait, along with a safe place to fish. Every participant received a free t-shirt, lunch, and take-away gift (this year a soft-pack cooler), courtesy of the Friends of Blackwater. Thanks to the 28 volunteers and staff who came out to make it a fun-filled day. We've received lots of positive feedback from participants!

Sincerely,
