Come to the Volunteer Sessions at Blackwater NWR

volunteer Want to be a Volunteer?
On Saturday August 9, Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge staff and the Friends of Blackwater will hold an information session at the Refuge Visitor Center from 9:00am to 4:00pm (lunch provided) where potential volunteers and current volunteers can learn about what the Refuge is doing to manage habitat and provide visitor services, and how volunteers can help. If you've always wanted to learn more about volunteering at the Refuge, now is a great time to come and hear about what we do. Attendees can stay for part of the day or for the full session. A training session will also be held on August 21, from 9:00am to 12:00pm, to train volunteers in the fundamentals. Register for either session by contacting Michele Whitbeck at 410-901-6124 ext. 23 or Michele_Whitbeck@fws.gov. Read the Refuge press release (PDF) for more details.

Help Support Migratory Waterfowl

Canada geese Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge serves as a major attraction to waterfowl wintering in Dorchester County. Thousands of ducks, geese, and swans use the Refuge not only as a safe resting location, but also as a major food source. To guarantee that migratory waterfowl have mature seed crops upon their fall arrival, the Grand National Waterfowl Association and Ladd Johnson & Associates have donated crop seed and additional funding to support the growing of these foods.  Visitors to the Refuge can witness migratory waterfowl making use of these crops October through February.

To help fund these efforts, the GNWA and Friends of Blackwater are jointly hosting the "Feed the Fowl" Dance on August 2, from 8:00pm to 12:00am at the American Legion Hall, Post 91, in Cambridge, Maryland. The Hall is located at the Corner of Rt. 50 and Radiance Drive at the foot of the Choptank River Bridge. The dance will feature the band Golden Touch. Tickets are $20/person or $30/couple. For more information and for tickets, please contact GNWA at 410-228-0111.
Pollinator Sanctuary Now Open

New Attraction at the Refuge
Black-eyed Susans In celebration of National Pollinator Week (June 16-22), Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge staff opened the new Pollinator Sanctuary trail at the entrance to the Wildlife Drive (just past the pay booth). This four-acre site was specifically designed as habitat for pollinating insects and was planted with over twenty five different species of native wildflowers and grasses, which will be in bloom for much of the spring and summer. Pollinating animals, including bees, birds, butterflies, bats, beetles and others, are vital to our delicate ecosystem, support terrestrial wildlife, and produce a healthy watershed. Be sure to check out the new Pollinator Sanctuary on your next visit.
Construction Begins on Tubman Visitor Center

Tubman Visitor Center New Building Near the Wildlife Drive
The State of Maryland has begun construction on the new Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad State Park Visitor Center across from the end of the Wildlife Drive at Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge. Once completed, the 15,000 square-foot LEED-certified Center will offer exhibit rooms that will immerse visitors in the life of Tubman, beginning with her childhood and following her through her time as a conductor on the Underground Railroad and finally ending with her continuous advocacy for justice. The Center will also include a gift shop, garden, and picnic tables. Read more about the park on the Maryland DNR website.
