Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Monument
|
President Obama Honors Tubman In late March, President Barack Obama created the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Monument near Blackwater NWR. The monument includes parts of Blackwater NWR, although those lands will remain under the control of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, while the monument will be managed by the National Park Service. You can read more about the monument and Harriet Tubman's inspiring life as one of the most successful "conductors" on the Underground Railroad by visiting the USFWS Blackwater NWR Harriet Tubman page. |
Join the Sixth Annual Wild Goose Chase

Women Cyclists Welcome Join Georgena Terry, along with hundreds of other active women bicyclists, for the Sixth Annual Wild Goose Chase on Saturday and Sunday, October 12 and 13, 2013. The Wild Goose Chase, a bicycle weekend for women, is based in Cambridge, Maryland, with all rides taking place in and around Blackwater NWR. The ride is also a fundraiser for Blackwater NWR, and your participation will help the Friends of Blackwater continue to protect this critical habitat. Visit our Wild Goose Chase page to learn how to register for this year's event. |
Two Eaglets on the Blackwater Eagle Cam
|
Check Out the Youngsters We currently have two fast-growing eaglets on the Blackwater NWR Eagle Cam. The chicks are doing well and will probably take their first flight in late May or early June. We plan to hold our Eaglet-Naming Contest this year, so stay tuned to the Eagle Cam page for details. |
Ospreys Arrive for New Season
|
New Nesting Season Begins
And if your taste is more for ospreys, then be sure to visit our Blackwater Osprey Cam where our adult ospreys just returned from spending the winter in South America. The couple is already adding sticks to the nest and mating, so we hope to have an egg in the next few weeks.
