Adult RE: Awareness Through Movement Classes Continue on Saturdays

UUCH Adult RE focuses on the whole spiritual person--mentally and physically.  From now through February 8th, we are hosting a class on gentle movement that can assist us in being more comfortable and pain-free in our everyday activities.  Come learn how to use the core of your body to improve movement, balance, and chronic pain.

This verbally guided Awareness Through Movement class is for anyone who wants more ease and comfort in their movements.

Class is drop-in, no experience necessary, and will be led by Sally Locklear. Everyone is welcome.  Wear comfortable, loose clothing, and bring a bath or beach towel to use as head support for comfort in side-lying.

Join us each Saturday morning at 10:00-11:15am.

For further information, contact Nancy Finley at finleyn@uah.edu.

If you need childcare for this event, please contact Nancy at least a week before the event.

"A Celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day"

The Reverend Alice Syltie

Across the country this year, the Martin Luther King Jr. celebrations will include a tribute to Nelson Mandela.  In his statement following the death of Nelson Mandela, the Reverend Peter Morales, president of the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA), reminded us of Mandela's words, "I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear." This Sunday we honor the legacy of two men who challenged systems of oppression, inspiring followers to loyalty and action that changed the world.

This Sunday in Religious Education

CREATIVE SERVICE DAY! On our Creative Service days, children and youth partner with church leaders to carry out a creative project that serves the entire congregation. This Sunday, children will collaborate on a special craft project as a surprise gift for church members, friends, and visitors at an upcoming youth-led worship service. Older youth (Searchers and Over-achievers) will work with worship leaders on creating their youth-led worship theme and elements. All are invited to take part in this special day.

Nursery care (ages 0-3) will be provided as usual.

For more information, contact Erin Reid, our Director of Religious Education (DRE) (256.694.6786 or eeried@hotmail.com).

Last "New UU" Class
This Sunday Before Church!

rainbow chalice

At 9:15 this Sunday, we offer the last class for these sessions of the "New UU" series.  Each session stands alone, so even if you missed the first two, this remaining session will still be beneficial.

Guided by the UU Tapestry of Faith Curriculum, this series explores important themes in UU congregational life such as worship, theology, history, covenant, faith development, social justice, and membership.  This program focuses on introducing newcomers to Unitarian Universalism, but those who have been at UUCH for a while will also be able to share and connect with others as we explore our own beliefs and how they intersect with the UU tradition.  Everyone is welcome!

So plan to attend Sunday morning, January 19th, for this chance to learn and share.   Meet for coffee or tea at 9:00 a.m.; discussion starts at 9:15.  Pam Korb and Nancy Finley will facilitate the discussion.  Contact Pam Korb (bradkorb@mindspring.com) for further info.

OWL Begins January 19th

The first session of Our Whole Lives (OWL) sexuality education programs for youth ages 11-12 will be Sunday, January 19th, 12:30-2:30 PM at the church, sponsored by the Children and Youth Religious Education Program. This kick-off session is a joint orientation meeting for parents/guardians and youth who will participate in the program. Families who wish to participate in the program must attend this meeting.

OWL offers a beautiful curriculum in keeping with UU values for building holistic identity and sexuality awareness in young people. OWL fosters authenticity, safety, age-appropriate understanding, self-worth, and, in general, provides the tools a young person needs to make healthy choices. OWL classes will be led by a committed team of trained facilitators. Read more about OWL at  http://www.uua.org/re/owl/.

If you are interested in participating in OWL, but have not yet enrolled, please contact DRE Erin Reid at eereid@hotmail.com by January 17th.

Wrapping Up a Guest At Your Table

As the holiday season ends, so does our participation in the Guest at Your Table (GAYT) program which is sponsored by the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee (UUSC). Hopefully you were able to pick up a GAYT box and/or the Stories of Hope booklet with a white envelope inside. The Stories of Hope booklet helped put some faces to the many grassroots organizations that the UUSC supports within the United States and around the world, and helped us visualize the Guests we support through our contributions to the UUSC.

There are three ways that you can send in your contribution to the UUSC's Guest at Your Table program:

1) Bring your GAYT box or envelope to church and leave it in the basket in the foyer.

2) Mail your GAYT envelope or check directly to the UUSC at:

Guest at Your Table

UUSC

P.O. Box 808

Newark, NJ 07101-0808

3) Charge your contribution on-line at the website: https://guest.uusc.org/uuch.

Upcoming Adult RE Discussion:
2013-2014 UUA "Common Read"

Increasingly, Americans are choosing to dine at restaurants that offer organic, fair-trade, and free-range ingredients for reasons of both health and ethics. Yet few of these diners are aware of the working conditions at the restaurants themselves. But whether you eat haute cuisine or fast food, the well being of restaurant workers is a pressing concern.

As the guest at your table campaign comes to a close the Adult RE committee invites you to join in as we discuss what it means for us to be guests at the tables in restaurants across this country. We will discuss the 2013-2014 UUA Common Read, "Behind the Kitchen Door" by Saru Jayaraman on Sunday evening February 23rd.

You can find a print version of the book at the UUA Bookstore (Click Here), Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble, and Books a Million. An eBook is also available if you prefer or if you are unable to get a copy for yourself we will have a few on the coffee bar at the back of the sanctuary that can be checked out. Keep an eye out for more  details to come. And START READING!
