City Council Approves Water Rate Increase
The City Council Tuesday approved a 6 percent increase in the city's water rates. The new rate will go into effect on Oct. 1. Four percent of the increase will provide revenue to maintain and enhance the city's aging water and sewer system and fund debt service on previous improvements. The remaining 2 percent will go toward repayment for the city's new advanced metering project and leak detection system.

BPD Cops & Kids Carnival Set for Saturday
Cops & Kids Kids and parents are invited to the second annual Cops & Kids Carnival this Saturday, Sept. 14, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There is no admission fee, and the event includes free food, games, rides, entertainment, and prizes. Police tactical units such as K-9 and SWAT will be on display, and uniformed officers will be available to talk with children and parents about safety, crime prevention, and police work as a career. The carnival offers children a chance to interact with officers in a fun, stress-free environment that improves trust and builds better relationships between cops and kids.The event is held on the Event Centre great lawn, 700 Crockett St. For more information, visit www.beaumontpd.com, or call 409-880-3825.
Homberg GC Hosting 76th City Championship
Henry Homberg GC Beaumont will crown its next City Champion at the 76th annual Beaumont City Championship, scheduled for Oct. 5-6 at Henry Homberg Golf Course. Entry is $60 for 36-hole medal play, flighted by handicap. Players must have an established handicap for flighting purposes. Carts are available for $10. The city champion must be a permanent resident of Beaumont. The course is located at 5940 Babe Zaharias Drive. For more information, call 409-842-3220.

Miller Branch Welcomes New Patrons for National 'Library Sign-up Month'
September is Library Card Sign-up Month. The R.C. Miller Memorial Library joins with the American Library Association and public libraries nationwide to ensure that not only do adults have the smartest card in their wallet, but that students have the most important school supply of all: a free library card. Throughout September, children will receive a free book for signing up for a library card. Pet of the Week  Pet of the Week   
Hailey is a 3-year-old unaltered female mix breed, medium-sized. She has been at Beaumont Animal Services for more than a month, recovering from a rough past. Hailey had a family that she loved, but one day they moved away and left her in the house all alone. Luckily, she was found, and is eager to find a new family.

The city animal shelter is located at 1884 Pine St., and is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.
