City Hosting Retirement Send-Off for Claudie Hawkins 
Claudie HawkinsThe City of Beaumont will thank Claudie Hawkins for her 35 years of service with a reception on Tuesday, May 21, from 4 to 6 p.m. The event will be held at the Event Centre, 700 Crockett St. Hawkins announced her retirement as the city's Director of Facilities and Libraries in March. The event is free and open to the public.
  
Library System Receives Two Donations                 
library logo Beaumont Public Libraries received two generous gifts in the past month. The Foundation for Southeast Texas awarded the system a $2,000 grant for its Summer Reading Program, which kicks off in June. The grant will allow the libraries to give one book to each child participating in the program, which is open to youths age 3-18. Another gift came from HEB, which donated 5,000 children's books to be distributed during the city's Books & Bites program. Libraries distribute the books in conjunction with the Summer Food Program, which is put on by the Parks & Recreation Department.
  
Miller Branch Hosting Grant-Writing Workshop   
The Miller Library Branch will host a grant-writing workshop on Monday, May 20, from 2-5 p.m. "Proposal Writing Basics" will cover how a proposal fits into the grant-seeking process, what to include in a standard proposal to a foundation, tips for making each section of your proposal stronger, what funders expect to see in your proposal and attachments, tips for communicating with funders during the grant process, and additional resources on proposal writing, including sample proposals. The presentation will be made by Chester Jourdan, Executive Director of the Southeast Texas Nonprofit Development Center. The workshop is free, but preregistration is required, as seating is limited. Event Will Cover Storm Preparedness
Entergy Texas invites citizens to attend "Operation: Storm Ready" on Wednesday, May 29, from 9 a.m. to noon, at the Ford Park Exhibit Hall. This event is designed to provide an overview of how Entergy handles storm emergencies, and what residents can do to prepare for and respond to storms. Attendees will be able to see the equipment used to restore power, hear from Entergy and local officials about preparations, discover what a leading hurricane specialist is predicting, and learn how they can be ready. Pet of the Week pet  

Sue-Ellen is a 3-year-old, long-haired chihuahua mix. She is very sweet and friendly, not spayed. 

 

The city animal shelter is located at 1884 Pine St., and is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.
