Early Registration for Calder 5K Closes Friday
calder 5kEarly registration ends Friday, April 19, for the 2013 Calder Twilight 5K. The fun run/walk is scheduled for Friday, May 3, at 7 p.m. Runners and walkers of all ages and skill levels are invited to participate in this fun evening race that will take participants down a portion of Calder Avenue and through Old Town. Early registration through Friday, April 19, is $20, and shirts are guaranteed if registered by that date. Late Registration after April 19 is $25. The run is chip-timed, and awards will be given in five-year age brackets. The race begins and ends at Rao's Bakery, located at the corner of Calder Avenue and 10th Street. The run is hosted by the City of Beaumont and the Sea Rim Striders. For additional information, a course map, and online registration, visit www.cityofbeaumont.com.
Household Hazardous Waste Collection Set for May
The South East Texas Regional Planning Commission and the City of Beaumont will host a collection event for household hazardous waste and scrap tires on Saturday, May 18, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Silsbee High School. The school is located at 1575 Highway 96 North in Silsbee. Items eligible for drop-off include batteries, paint and varnish, solvents, pesticides and fertilizers, auto fluids, used oil and filters, pool chemicals, and mercury. Scrap tires will be collected free for the first eight. There is a $1 fee for each additional tire. For more information, call 409-899-8444, Ext. 7520, or visit setrpc.org.
Moonlight Bicycle Madness Rolling May 24moonlight madness
The City of Beaumont Recreation Division will host its 15th annual Moonlight Madness Bicycle Ride on Friday, May 24. Registration will be from 7 to 10 p.m. at Rogers Park, 1455 Dowlen Road. Advance registration is also available at the Sterling Pruitt Activity Center, 2930 Gulf St., and Bicycle Sports, 2770 I-10 East. Forms are available at beaumontrecreation.com. This 14-mile fun ride kicks off promptly at 10 p.m. For more information, call 409-781-1298.  
HR Rolling Out New Application Process

Human Resources will begin using a new and improved online application system beginning April 22. As part of the process, all applicants who apply for new jobs must create new accounts and applications. Previous applications and personal history data will no longer be available. Most processes will not change drastically, but it is new software with a new appearance and functionality. Applicants will continue to access the new system through the city website, www.cityofbeaumont.com. For more information, call the Human Resources Department at 409-880-3777.  

Registration Open for the 2013 Beaumont Bike Cops & KidsRodeo 

The Beaumont Police Department and the Southeast Texas Hike & Bike Coalition are teaming up to present the 2013 Beaumont Bike Rodeo. This fun and interactive event is designed to teach bike safety and road rules to school-age children. The event will be held on Saturday, May 4, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Beaumont Event Centre. Activities include:

  • bike obstacle course
  • bike tune-ups
  • safety instruction
  • entertainment
  • bike silent auction
  • helmet give-away
  • food & prizes

Pet of the Week pet

Franko is a six-month-old unneutered Chihuahua mix.He loves attention and is very sweet.

The city animal shelter is located at 1884 Pine St., and is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.
