Health Department Urges Citizens to get Flu Shot

Beaumont, TexasThe City of Beaumont's Public Health Department is reporting a sharp increase in reports of influenza-like illnesses. This trend reflects state and national reports of increase in the flu.

Getting vaccinated for influenza is a safe and effective way to prevent the disease, and it is not too late for citizens who have not been vaccinated to do so. Due to high demand, the Public Health Department is currently out of vaccine, however, citizens can contact their physician, or visit one of the area's local pharmacies that provide it.

In addition to vaccination, other precautions play an important role in preventing the spread of flu, and can make a difference in its impact communitywide. There are a number of nonmedical steps to prevent flu: wash hands frequently; avoid touching your nose, eyes and mouth;  and always sneeze or cough into the crook of your elbow to prevent the spread of germs. It also extremely important to stay home from school or work if you feel you are ill.
