Olson Park Playground is Open
The new playground at Olson Park has been installed and is open to the public! The playground equipment, which cost $57,292, includes swings, a rope climber, boulders and a slide. The equipment was purchased from Playworld and Cre8Play and offers a unique, nature-themed twist to the original playground. Equipment is durable and safe and built through a combination of materials including concrete, GFRC (glass fiber reinforced concrete), steel, sculpting epoxy, composite wood and various plastics.
Moon Parks and Recreation cautions that, although the playground equipment is usable, residents should be careful while accessing the playground. Moon Parks will be finishing constructing an ADA accessible ramp leading to the access bridge in the next few weeks. |

Reminders Before Draining Your Pool
With school starting and summer to an end, it might be time for homeowners to begin draining their pools for the season. The Department of Public Works would like to remind residents that while draining the water helps to protect your pool, it is important to follow these EPA guidelines to help protect our watersheds.
Swimming pools are a major source of chlorinated water discharged into sanitary and storm sewer systems. An average swimming pool holds 19,500 gallons of highly chlorinated water, which is toxic to wildlife and fish.
There are different options available to homeowners to prevent sending chlorinated pool water into storm drains. A few simple control measures that prove to be effective are as follows:
- discharge the chlorinated water to land where it will not drain to local surface waters; or
- dechlorinate the water before draining the pool; or
- allow the water to discharge over a lawn surface at least 15 ft. before the street; or
- allow water to remain in pool without chlorine for 5 days or until levels are below 0.1 mg/l.
More information about pool discharge options can be found here.

Moon Township Police and the Defense Logistics Agency 1033 Program
Moon Township Police Department has recently acquired two vehicles and a trailer through the Defense Logistics Agency 1033 Program. The 1033 program is designed to put some types of U.S. Military surplus into the hands of local law enforcement.
This summer, Moon PD acquired two high mobility multipurpose wheeled vehicles also known as HMMWVs at no cost to the township. In May, Moon PD acquired the first vehicle, a soft-top, four-wheel drive HMMWV, that they intend to use it as a police utility truck--not for patrol or traditional police calls. Recently, it was used to transport dozens of child safety seats to the Moon Police warehouse and also to transport a door from the crime lab to a resident's home.
The second vehicle, a four-door hard shell HMMWV, will be used as a transport vehicle for officers that are members of the South Hills Area Council of Governments Critical Incident Response Team (SHACOG). Moon Police Department has three officers on the Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT), which includes members from Baldwin Borough, Baldwin Township, Bethel Park, Brentwood, Castle Shannon, Dormont, Elizabeth Township, Findlay Township, Heidelberg, Jefferson Hills, Moon Township, Mt. Lebanon, Mt. Oliver, Peters Twp., Pleasant Hills, Scott Twp., South Park Twp., Upper St. Clair, West Mifflin and Whitehall Borough.
