Brodhead Road Overnight Paving Project Delayed
The overnight paving project on Brodhead Road has been delayed due to weather earlier in the season. Weather permitting, Lane Construction has estimated they will begin night time milling on August 17. Night time work will continue until September 25.
Lane Construction was contracted by PennDOT to pave Brodhead Road between University Boulevard and Flaugherty Run Road. The paving will occur at night between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. in order to eliminate traffic congestion that would occur from daylight closures. There will be alternating, one-way traffic in the construction zone.
Prior to or concurrent with the night time work, Lane Construction expects to perform repairs to stormwater inlets during normal construction hours of 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday. While township ordinances permit construction during these hours the Township requested that the work not be performed during peak traffic hours of roughly 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Residents are reminded to slow down and use caution when driving through work areas. For questions or more information, please contact Township Engineer, Mal Petroccia at mpetroccia@moontwp.us.

Bees Removed from Robin Hill Park Trail
A bee covered trail at Robin Hill Park has been reopened--and is now bee-free!
Moon Parks and Recreation staff found a local beekeeper to remove a bee hive that was covering 6 feet of a large Honey Locust tree that had fallen and was blocking a trail at Robin Hill Park. The overall bee population has been struggling in recent years due to habitat loss, pesticides, pathogens and parasites. In order to remove the bees in a safe and environmental friendly manner, P&R found Jeff Allison, a local bee keeper and member of the Beaver County Bee Keeper Association, who specializes in making honey, bee keeping and hive preservation. Jeff, with the help of Parks and Public Works staff, used a chain saw to collect sections of the tree without harming or disrupting the bees and removed them from the park. The trail has been reopened and the Honey Locust tree housing the bees has been removed.

Raccoon Oral Rabies Vaccine Baiting August 10-14
The Allegheny County Health Department will be disseminating vaccine-containing bait throughout the county beginning August 10, 2015.
Two types of baits will be used this year; one in a which vaccine contained in a plastic sachet is enclosed in fishmeal pellets and a second in which the plastic sachet is coated with a fish oil scent. The vaccine, when consumed by raccoons, results in their developing antibodies to the rabies virus. Please note that the baits pose no appreciable risk to humans or pets.
Health Department employees will apply bait by hand in all municipalities on foot and from vehicles. On-land baiting is scheduled to begin the week of August 10, 2015 in Allegheny County.
