Celebrate 4th of July at Moon Park!

Join us for our annual Moon Parks & Recreation Fourth of July Celebration sponsored by Clearview Federal Credit Union. Saturday July 4th at Moon Park. Featuring live music, food, vendors, games, and of course Zambelli Fireworks.

 

The festivities kick-off at 4 p.m. at Moon Park with fun for the whole family including kids' activities, entertainment, recognition of local military, food vendors, and more!

 

The amphitheater stage will rock with an all-star musical lineup beginning at 6 p.m. featuring local and national artists:

6:45pm - Frank Vieira & Band

7:30pm - Stoney Richards & Band

8:15pm - Sarah Marince

9:00pm - Austin Webb

 

A special tribute to local military veterans will take place prior to the fireworks spectacular by Zambelli Fireworks that will begin at approximately 10 p.m.  
Board of Supervisors Hires New Township Manager and Planning Director

During the July 1 Public Meeting, the Board of Supervisors approved a motion to hire a new Township Manager. After over 6 months of vacancy in the manager position, the Board has hired Dawn Lane to fill the position. Dawn previously worked for Ross Township where she recently resigned as the Finance Director. She will begin her employment with the Township next week.

The Board of Supervisors also made note of another new hire during the public meeting on Wednesday. Scott Brilhart started this week as the township's Planning Director and Assistant Manager. Scott previously held this position, before leaving in 2008. when he left and began working for Upper St. Clair. Scott returns to us from Upper St. Clair, where he worked as Director of Community Development for nearly 7 years.
Brodhead Road Overnight Paving

Lane Construction has been contracted by PennDOT to pave Brodhead Road between University Boulevard and Flaugherty Run Road. The paving will occur at night between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. in order to eliminate traffic congestion that would occur from daylight closures. There will be alternating, one-way traffic in the construction zone.

Weather permitting, the project is scheduled to begin July 13, 2015 and completed by mid-September. Residents are reminded to slow down and use caution when driving through work areas. For questions or more information, please contact Township Engineer, Mal Petroccia at mpetroccia@moontwp.us.

Moon Park Restroom Renovations Update

Moon Park restroom renovations are wrapping up! Renovations at the park office and main restrooms across from the playground are completed and both are fully open. The newly built restrooms near Defenzio field and near the amphitheater and Saturn field are both completed and ready for use as well! Restrooms near the tennis courts are still under construction, but should be completed in the next week. Moon Parks and Recreation would like to thank residents for their patience during the construction of these restrooms and look forward to continuing our efforts to improve our parks!
Olson Park Trail Sponsorship



During the July 1st Board of Supervisors meeting, Title Source presented the Board of Supervisors and the Moon Parks and Recreation Department with a $3,000 check to sponsor the primary trail at Olson Park. Title Source has been an official sponsor of the Trading Post Trail at Olson since this spring.

The stewardship will go towards funding for GPS and mapped trails, bridges, improved accessibility, wildlife cameras for web-linked nature moments and more.
Township Ordinances Available Online

On April 9, 2015, the Board of Supervisors approved significant revisions to Moon Township ordinances. These ordinances regulate Moon Township interests such as building codes, fire protection, business regulations, motor vehicles, zoning, taxes, bond issues and much more. The ordinances can now be accessed 24 hours a day by visiting the township website and choosing the "Your Government" drop down menu and clicking on the "Ordinances" tab.
Comprehensive Plan Implementation Committee

Moon Township is looking for volunteers interested in joining the Comprehensive Plan Implementation Committee. The Implementation Committee will comprise of 11 individuals who are Moon Township residents or stakeholders, interested in shaping Moon Township as an ideal and prosperous community for many years to come. Individuals interested in joining the committee can send their resume to Jeff Ziegler at jziegler@moontwp.us. Submissions should be made by July 29, 2015.

Moon Farmers' Market is Back in Action
Every Wednesday, June-September
3:30 p.m.-6:30 p.m.

Stop by the Administration Building parking lot on Wednesdays this summer and pick up some fresh, flavorful produce at the Moon Farmers' Market. Locally grown and prepared products will be available from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. every Wednesday through the end of September.


 

The Farmers' Market accepts cash, credit, debit, SNAP and FMNP vouchers. Spend $5 in SNAP and receive a $2 coupon for fruits and vegetables.

Electronics Recycling Collection
August 1, 2015
10 a.m.-2 p.m.

Moon Township's Environmental Advisory Council in partnership with JVS Environmental host quarterly Electronics Collections to gather unused and unwanted electronic items. 

Only one TV per vehicle can be accepted. Items will be collected at the Moon Township Municipal Building, 1000 Beaver Grade Road, from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.

These events collect electronic items only, including printers, copiers, computers, laptops and televisions. Electronics Collections are open to Moon Township residents, businesses and surrounding communities.
Vacant Property Recovery Program Deadline Extended to August 31, 2015

The Allegheny Vacant Property Recovery Program is extending the application deadline for the 2015 Side Yard and Blighted Structure Program from June 30, 2015 until August 31, 2015.

Allegheny County is accepting applications to acquire vacant properties at a reduced cost to applicants. The program is designed to acquire blighted, tax delinquent properties and resell them to applicants for a reuse outlined in their application and approved by the township.

Applications must be submitted no later than August 31, 2015. Up to sixty applications, with a maximum of five per municipality, will be accepted in the order received for consideration.

Reminder From The Property Tax Office

We are currently collecting the face amount for the 2015 Township of Moon Property Tax and the Moon Area School District Property Tax Statements were mailed on July 1, 2015. The 2015 millage rate remained the same as last year at 17.8461 mills. The Homestead exemption for the school property tax is a savings of $130.57 for this year. Discounted or the first installment payments are due no later than August 31, 2015. If you have not recieved a bill for either tax yet, please call the Property Tax Office immediately at 412-299-7446. Have a safe and happy Fourth of July!
