Supervisors Meeting Minutes Available Online
At the December regular public meeting the board approved a resolution supporting the participation of Moon Township being among the first municipalities to become certified through the Southwestern Pennsylvania Sustainable Community Essentials Certification program. Moon is recognized at the gold level of certification for meeting the program's rigorous performance criteria which tracks 131 policies and practices that define a sustainable community. The Sustainable Community Essentials Certification, developed by Sustainable Pittsburgh, is designed for municipalities that are working to save money, conserve resources and serve vibrant communities. Code Administrator Lora Dombrowski completed the certification application with the assistance of Green Initiatives Coordinator Rebecca Kiernan. Details regarding how Moon Township is addressing these areas can be found on the program's website sustainablecommunityessentials.org.

Advisory Boards Accepting Applications
The Moon Township Board of Supervisors is accepting letters of interest and resumes from residents who are interested in serving on one or more of the township's advisory boards and commissions. All citizens are encouraged to carefully consider these important public service opportunities. |
Reorganization of Communications and Community Development Departments
Communication Department
On Monday, November 25, 2013 the board promoted Executive Director of Community Television Jim Koepfinger to the position of Director of Communications and Technology. The position entails the performance of complex technical and professional work in support of the various computer systems located in and across municipal departments as well as overseeing the communications department located in the MCA-TV studio. Koepfinger has held the position of Executive Director of Community Television with the township for 28 years.
Community Development Department
The board retained Malcolm Petroccia as Moon Township Engineer, employee of the Township of Moon, effective December 16, 2013. Petroccia previously worked as a Project Manager for Michael Baker Jr., Inc. located in Moon Township where he held the position of Municipal Engineer for Moon. The township's Community Development Department has had an absence of Planning Director since July 2013 and Assistant Planning Director since 2008. The township created a new position of Community Developer Director/Planner to be filled in January 2014.

Moon Celebrates 225 Years
Moon Township celebrates its 225th Anniversary on December 18, 2013. Moon Community Access Television and Old Moon Township Historical Society President Earl Edwards have produced a history series of the township that airs on MCA-TV, Comcast channel 14/Verizon FiOs channel 35. Watch the premiere of the third segment of the series Moon Township Remembers on Wednesday, December 18 at 4 p.m. and again at 8:30 p.m. This episode features residents, both past and present, as they reminisce about the township and discuss how it has changed throughout the years. Edwards and OMTHS member, Carl Griffith, share photos with residents to trigger memories and spark conversation. |
Prescription Drug Drop Off
 The Moon Township Police Department now offers prescription drug disposal in its lobby that is open to the public at all hours. The disposal box is made from a large old fashion mailbox where residents can drop off unwanted or expired prescription drugs. The project is sponsored by the Allegheny County District Attorney's Office. The DA has received assurances from local hospitals to assist in the destruction of unwanted medications. The disposal area is video monitored and under the control of police staff around the clock. Moon Police will continue to participate in the Drug Enforcement Administration National Take Back Prescription Drug Collection program held semiannually. |
Start the New Year with an Everlasting Memory
Give the gift that lasts a lifetime with an engraved brick in the Moon Township Memorial Garden. Bricks are placed in the walkway circling the township's 9/11 Memorial and memorials honoring public safety professionals and military service members. Bricks are available at a cost of $65 for an engraved 4x8 inch brick; after the first purchase, additional bricks are $50. Engraved 8x8 inch business bricks also are available for $200. Brick donations support the continued development of the Memorial Garden. Contact Fire Marshal Charlie Belgie at 412-262-5004 to order a commemorative brick today.

New Shows in Production at MCA-TV

MCA-TV has several new shows in production that are scheduled to air this winter.
 Tatts n' Tunes is a mixed variety show that will premiere and promote local venues, music and events while also gaining the personal and private factors of knowing the musicians, artists and the inner workings of the venue. This program is produced by Moon resident, Frank Magnotta, and MCA-TV volunteer Randy Lee Bartosh.  |

Life in Nancy's Kitchen features enthusiastic host, Nancy Stampahar, as she teaches viewers how to cook simple recipes while she discusses motivational skills to encourage them to live life to its fullest. This show is produced by Moon resident, Denise Underwood, and MCA-TV Volunteer Nancy Stampahar.
 Mia Cucina spotlights gourmet cooking demonstrated by Moon resident and MCA-TV volunteer Pam Krug. Join Krug as she prepares wholesome dishes with fresh ingredients. Krug produces Mia Cucina with MCA-TV volunteers Barb Karp and Rose Varsanik.

2. Individuals who are between the ages of 16 to 18 years old interested in becoming a Junior Firefighter must attend high school and be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

December reminders:
Residents are currently in the 10 percent penalty period for both 2013 township and school property taxes. All property taxes must be collected or postmarked by December 31, 2013. All unpaid property taxes after January 1, 2014 will be turned over to the delinquent collection agency as appointed by the township or school district depending on which tax may be outstanding. Additional fees and interest can be added by those agencies to the outstanding tax.
Online payments by E-check ($1.50) or credit card (ESCI adds additional fee for their service) are available at moontaxoffice.us. Only full payments are available online at this time.

Home Alone Monitoring

Never feel alone with Moon Township Police Department's Home Alone Monitoring. This system automatically telephones a resident once or twice a day depending on their needs. The resident in need will receive this message, "This is the Moon Township Police Department. If you are okay, press 1; if you are not okay, press 2." If the resident presses number 2 or fails to press any number, an emergency contact will be called.
