Supervisors Meeting Minutes Available Online
At the November regular public meeting representatives from Speedway, LLC were present for a public hearing regarding the proposed development of Speedway at 1225 Maple Street Extension. Residents who live near the property were also present at the public hearing to voice their opinions regarding the proposed development of Speedway. The board voted to continue the public hearing at the Regular Meeting of the Board of Supervisors on Wednesday, December 4, 2013 at 7 p.m. in the Moon Township Administration Building Auditorium.
 
Representatives from Chevron USA were also present for a public hearing regarding the proposed ordinance amending Chapter 208 of the Moon Township Code of Ordinances, Zoning, to amend the Township Zoning Map for properties owned by Montour Parks Associates Holdings LP, Chevron USA and GMTN Moon Township, LLC. The zoning was approved to be changed from C2, Highway Commercial, to BP, Business Park. Chevron will be present for a public hearing at the December regular public meeting of the Board of Supervisors.

Montour Trail Council Recognized
The Moon Township Board of Supervisors recognized the members of the Montour Trail Council for their volunteer efforts in the community and in celebration of the 20th Anniversary of the Montour Trail being opened in Moon Township.

Township Meeting Changes
The monthly workshop meetings of the Moon Township Board of Supervisors have been changed for the months of November and December to the following dates:
  • November Workshop Meeting: 
    • Monday, November 25 at 6 p.m
  • December Workshop Meeting: 
    • Wednesday, December 18 at 6 p.m.

The December Planning Commission Meeting has been changed to Wednesday, December 11 at 6 p.m. All meetings are held in the Moon Township Administration Office located at 1000 Beaver Grade Road.

Employment Opportunity: 

School Crossing Guard - Bon Meade Elementary 

The Moon Township Police Department has an open position for a part-time School Crossing Guard for the Bon Meade Elementary School.  Hours are 7:45 a.m. through 9 a.m. and again 2:30 p.m. through 3:45 p.m., Monday through Friday during the school year.  The position pays $13.92 per hour without benefits.  All equipment, clothing and training are provided.  Anyone interested in applying should contact Captain Greg Seamon at the Moon Township Police Department at 412-262-5000 or stop by the Moon Township Police Station at 1000 Beaver Grade Road, Moon Township, PA 15108 to pick up an application.  

Compost Drop-Off
Open through December 8 | Saturday & Sunday
9 a.m. - 5 p.m. | Downes Fire Station

Residents are welcome to drop off yard waste including tree limbs, leaves and plant matter to be composted at the Downes Fire Station located near the intersection of Beaver Grade Road and Ewing Road. Brush should not exceed six feet in length, four inches in diameter and should not be bundled or tied. The township asks that residents do not discard of any materials at the composting site after hours unless special arrangements have been made with the township. To schedule a drop off during non-operating hours contact the Moon Township Administration Office at 412-262-1700. Violators will be fined.

Moon Township encourages residents to try composting at home. Composting food and yard waste diverts organic waste from the landfill and creates a rich soil additive for landscaping projects. A home composting guide is available on the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection website at depweb.state.pa.us.
Leaf Pick Up
Offered through November 27 | Monday - Friday
Leaf pick up schedule will follow resident's regular garbage collection. Place leaves at the curb by 7 a.m. on pickup day. Residents are asked to put leaves in bio-degradable paper bags, no plastic bags or boxes will be accepted. Bio-degradable paper bags can be purchased at any home improvement store. There will be no pickup on Veterans Day, Monday, November 11.
Tree Limb Drop-Off
Monday - Friday | 7 a.m. - 3 p.m. |Downes Fire Station
The Public Works Department offers Tree Limb Drop-Off year round. 
Tree branches should not exceed six feet in length, four inches in diameter and should not be bundled or tied. Moon Township Wants to Hear Your Memories

225 logoIn celebration of Moon Township's 225th Anniversary the township is asking residents, both past and present, to share their favorite stories and memories of people, places and how the township has changed through the years.  Email stories and photos to asergeant@moontwp.com and then read the memories of others in the community online at moontwp.com.  

Moon Township Memorial Garden Walkway
Give a special gift this holiday season with a personalized brick in Moon Township's Memorial Garden Walkway, located between the Public Safety Building and Township Administrative Office.  A gift of an engraved brick brings enjoyment to friends and family for years to come.
 

Engraved bricks are placed in the walkway circling the township's 9/11 Memorial and memorials honoring Moon Township's public safety professionals and military service members.  Bricks are available at a cost of $65 for an engraved 4x8 inch brick; after the first purchase, additional bricks are $50.  Engraved 8x8 inch business bricks also are available for $200. Brick donations support the continued development of the Memorial Garden.  Contact Fire Marshal Charlie Belgie at 412-262-5004 to order your commemorative brick.

Moon Community Access Television is offering a free four week television production training course for local communities. Classes begin Tuesday, November 26, 2013 and will continue on Tuesdays, December 3, 10 and 17 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the MCA-TV studio located at 1700 Beaver Grade Road, suite 140. Participants must complete all four classes to become a volunteer. The class is open to Moon Township residents and residents of surrounding communities looking to advance their knowledge of studio, camera, audio and technical training. Successful completion of the four week course provides the opportunity to be an official MCA-TV volunteer. Active MCA-TV volunteers are given camera and studio equipment privileges as well as the opportunity to be a part of shows produced for and aired on MCA-TV.

 

Anyone interested in attending MCA-TV's television production course should contact Communications Director Alexis Sergeant at asergeant@moontwp.com or call 412-269-1191.  Limited spaces are available.

 

Become a MCA-TV Community Producer

Moon Township residents who successfully complete the course can become a community producer. Community producers provide the original and entertaining productions of MCA-TV's programming schedule.  Several MCA-TV original shows have won national and state-wide awards including "The Doctor Is In", produced by Dr. Marc Schneiderman, and "Soak it Up: A Storm Water Documentary". These award-winning shows express the evident value of community-produced programming.

MTVFC Offers Fire Extinguisher Training

The Moon Township Volunteer Fire Company offers fire

Fire

extinguisher training to small groups and organizations.  Sessions include a brief lecture and hands-on training teaching each participant how to evaluate whether or not to fight a fire with an extinguisher and how to operate a portable fire extinguisher safely and effectively.  Contact MTVFC Chief, John Scott, at 412-262-1700 ext. 435 for more information and to schedule a training session.  Fire extinguisher training is free; however, donations to the MTVFC are greatly appreciated.

The recreational basketball league returns for another season. This league is for girls and boys, designed with a focus on skill development including passing, shooting and dribbling. The league is open to all skill levels.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Moon Township voters for their confidence and support on November 5, 2013. I am humbled and appreciative for the opportunity to remain your Moon Township Property Tax Collector for four more years.  I look forward to again serving the taxpayers of our township to the best of my ability with integrity, fairness and professionalism.  As always, if anyone has a property tax related question, never hesitate to call my office.  I also welcome suggestions from any township resident to continue improving the services my office provides for our community.

 

November/December reminders:

We are currently in the 10 percent penalty period for both 2013 township and school property taxes.  All property taxes must be collected or postmarked by December 31, 2013.  All unpaid property taxes after January 1, 2014 will be turned over to the delinquent collection agency as appointed by the township or school district depending on which tax may be outstanding.  Additional fees and interest can be added by those agencies to the outstanding tax.  Please call my office if you have any questions.

 

Taxpayers paying the moon area school district property tax by installments; we are currently collecting the fourth and final installment for the 2013 tax year.  The final installment is due by November 30; however, that is a Saturday so I will be accepting the final installments on Monday, December 2 or postmarked by 12/2/13.  The office will be closed on November 28 & 29 for Thanksgiving. 

 

Online payments by E-check ($1.50) or credit card (ESCI adds additional fee for their service) are available at  moontaxoffice.us. Only full payments are available online at this time. 

 

The Moon Township Property Tax office will be closed on Monday, November 11 in honor of Veterans Day.  My office sends our deepest gratitude to all veterans and thanks them for their service and sacrifices.

Home Alone Monitoring

Never feel alone with the Moon Township Police Home Alone Monitoring.  This system automatically telephones a resident once or twice a day depending on their needs. The resident in need will receive this message, "This is the Moon Township Police Department. If you are okay, press 1; if you are not okay, press 2." If the resident presses number 2 or fails to press any number, an emergency contact will be called.
