Board of Supervisors Recognize Eagle Scouts
The Moon Township Board of Supervisors presented a proclamation to the following Boy Scouts on achieving the rank of Eagle Scout, an honor earned by only about five percent of all Boy Scouts. To earn this rank, Scouts must earn 21 merit badges, serve their troop in a variety of leadership roles, and complete a major community service project.
- Michael Marinus of Boy Scout Troop 310 earned 25 merit badges. Marinus built a fire pit including benches at Phillip's Church in Moon Township to benefit the youth ministry.
- William Geldmaker of Boy Scout Troop 310 earned 22 merit badges. Geldmaker raised funds and then cleaned and cleared the rear yard area behind Spencer and Friends Animal Rescue in Avalon to construct a more attractive entrance to the facility.
- Timothy Geldmaker of Boy Scout Troop 310 earned 39 merit badges and was selected to be a member of the Order of the Arrow. Geldmaker excavated, leveled, and constructed a concrete pad area at the Sharon Community Presbyterian Church cemetery with three brick walls where two park benches were installed.

CPR Education and Training Initiative
The Department of Health has launched a new CPR education and training initiative, the "Lend a Hand Save a Life" campaign. The campaign hopes to encourage CPR trainers to collaborate with local organizations to teach the 5-minute hands-only CPR. Hands-only CPR has three easy steps: call 911, push hard and fast in the center of the chest, and use an automated external defibrillator (AED) if available. This type of CPR has been proven as effective as CPR with breaths in treating adult cardiac arrest victims. Anyone interested in being trained in CPR may visit www.heart.org/cpr or www.redcross.org/take-a-class. The "Lend a Hand, Save a Life" campaign will run through May 26, the end of National EMS week. Additional information on the campaign can be found at www.heart.org/lendahandsavealife.

Updates from the Moon Twp. Property Tax Office
-Catherine L. Tress, Moon Township Property Tax Collector
Moon Township property tax statements were mailed on April 1, 2013. The payment periods are as follows:
- 2% discount: through May 31
- Face (full amount): June 1 - July 31
- 10% penalty: August 1 - December 31
Property owners who filed an appeal for their 2013 property reassessment - Do not miss the discount or face period because of waiting to see what happens with your county reassessment appeal. If you receive a reduction (exoneration) after you have already paid your property tax I will issue a request and the township will send you a refund.
The 2013 Moon Township Property Tax Homestead Exemption is $15,000. It is automatically deducted from the property owner's full assessment. The property tax is calculated based on the lower value.
Due to the anti-windfall provision in the year of reassessments, Allegheny County lowered their millage rate and increased the county homestead exemption to $18,000. This only applies to the county exemption. Moon Township reduced the total millage to account for the anti-windfall provision allowance only. Please note that if, as a property owner, you qualify for the homestead exemption, you automatically receive Act 1 - property tax relief reduction for school property tax.
Property Tax Office Hours: May - September 2013
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday: 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Thursday: 1p.m. - 7 p.m.
Saturday: 10 a.m. - 12 p.m.
