Supervisors Meeting Minutes Available Online
At their October regular public meeting the Board of Supervisors announced the release of Moon Township's new paperless agenda system - eGovernance Solution enables the township to save time, money, and increase board effectiveness.  The new eGovernance features can be accessed via Moon Township's website on both the Meeting Agendas and Meeting Minutes page.  Residents can follow the agenda live at home during the meeting and look at agenda items immediately online following the meeting. For questions regarding the new eGovernance initiative, contact the Township Administration Office at 412-262-1700.

The next Board of Supervisors Meeting will be on Wednesday, November 7, 2012 in the Township Administration Building Auditorium at 7 p.m.
Act 13 - Public Meeting to be Held
Wednesday, December 5 | 7 p.m. | Administration Bldg.
The Board announced that they will hold a public hearing regarding the Township's Oil and Gas Ordinance which is being revised based on Act 13 - The Pennsylvania Oil and Gas Act.  Moon Township Special Counsel, Gavin Robb, and Township Supervisors and Officials will be present to answer questions from the public.  If you have a question in mind you would like addressed at the public hearing regarding Act 13 or the proposed ordinance please e-mail your question to Moon Township Manager, Jeanne Creese, at jcreese@moontwp.com to help the public hearing run more smoothly.  The Board will consider three draft ordinances prepared by the Planning Department, Planning Commission, and Township Officials that would regulate in which zoning districts oil and gas operations will be permitted as a conditional use.  As of 2012, under Act 13, the Township is not permitted to regulate or provide restrictions on how the oil and gas operations take place.  The proposed ordinances are available for review by the public.
Volunteer Fire Company to Host Open House

Sunday, October 7 | 12 - 5 p.m. | Public Safety Building

Sound the alarm!  The Moon Township Volunteer Fire Company is hosting an Open House as a kickoff to Fire Prevention Week.  All residents are invited and encouraged to attend.  Fire trucks, rescue trucks, police cars, and Valley Ambulance units will be on display including the landing of a medical helicopter.  Firefighters will talk with guests about fire safety, setting up an emergency fire escape plan at home, and remembering to "stop, drop, and roll".  They will also train guests how to use a fire extinguisher and talk with parents about teaching their children the proper use of 911.

Volunteer Requirements

1.  Current resident of Moon Township

2.  Individuals who are between the ages of 16 to 18 years old interested in becoming a Junior Firefighter must attend high school and be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Curbside Brush Pick Up Begins October 1
October 1 - 26 | Monday- Friday
The Public Works Department will offer curbside brush pick up.  The schedule will follow resident's regular garbage collection, simply place brush at the curb by 7 a.m. on pick up day. Brush should not exceed six feet in length and four inches in diameter and it should not be bundled or tied. Leaves are not accepted for pick up during October.
Leaf Collection Begins November 5

November 5 - 30 | Monday - Friday
The Public Works Department will offer curbside leaf pick up. The schedule will follow resident's regular garbage collection, simply place leaves at the curb by 7 a.m. on pick up day. Residents are asked to put their leaves in biodegradable paper bags, no plastic bags or boxes will be accepted. There will be no pick up on Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day, or the Friday following Thanksgiving. 

Compost Drop-Off Site
Oct. 19 - Dec. 4 | Saturdays & Sundays | 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.
Residents are welcome to drop off yard waste including tree limbs, leaves, and plant matter to be composted at the Downes Fire Station located near the intersection of Beaver Grade and Ewing Road. Brush should not exceed six feet in length & four inches in diameter & should not be bundled or tied. The township asks that residents do not discard of any materials at the site after hours unless special arrangements have been made with the township. To schedule a drop off during non-operating hours call the Township Municipal Office at 412-262-1700. Violators will be fined.

Moon Township encourages residents to try composting at home. Composting food and yard waste diverts organic waste from the landfill and creates a rich soil additive for landscaping projects. For tips to get started, find a home composting guide on the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection website.
Electronics Recycling Day
Sat., October 27 | 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. |Administration Building

The Township of Moon's Environmental Advisory Council in partnership with JVS Environmental will hold an Electronics Collection to collect unused and unwanted electronic items.  This event will collect electronic items ONLY including; printers, copiers, computers, laptops, televisions, etc.  Electronics Collections are open to Moon Township residents, businesses, and surrounding communities.

Trick or Treat Around the Township

Wednesday, October 31 | 6:30 - 8 p.m.

Moon Township's Trick or Treat night falls on Halloween this year.  Kids are asked to dress in reflective clothing and carry a flashlight.  Parents are advised to accompany children and teens are encouraged to stay in groups.  Visits should be limited to well-lit homes, and be careful of barking dogs and unattended animals.  Let's keep trick or treat a spooktacular community event for children and families.  

MCA-TV Kicks Off MHS Football Season

MCA-TV has kicked off its 27th consecutive season of Moon Area High School Varsity football coverage on Friday nights. MCA-TV will cover every home and away Tiger football game. Games will air on MCA-TV Comcast channel 14 and Verizon channel 35 on Saturdays at 11 a.m., Sundays at 7 p.m., and on Mondays at 10 a.m., 4 p.m., and 8 p.m. Fans also can view games online at www.mca-tv.org the week following the game.

Important Updates from the Property Tax Office

Moon Township Property Tax Collector, Catherine Tress, has several reminders for the remaining 2012 tax year. 

 

The Moon Property Tax Office now has several designated 15 minute tax office parking spaces located near the entrance of the property tax office for the convenience of taxpayers dropping off their payment.  

 

The Moon Property Tax Payment Period is currently in the 10% penalty amount.  Property owners have until December 31, 2012 to pay their municipal property tax. 

Beginning January 1, 2013 all property taxes become delinquent.  

 

School Property Tax Payment Periods:

Moon Area School District tax millage rate is 21.3 mils.

September 1-October 31:............................ Face amount due

October 1-December 31:........................ 10% penalty amount

 

If you have recently refinanced, paid off your mortgage or did not receive your 2012 tax property statement(s) contact the Moon Property Tax Office at 412-299-7446 to correct your mailing records.  It is the homeowner's responsibility, not the mortgage company, to notify the tax office when these instances occur.  According to state law, property owners are responsible for their property taxes even if they do not receive a bill.

 

FOR SCHOOL PROPERTY TAXES ONLY:

NEW INSTALLMENT DATES 

The property tax office is currently collecting the third installment payment this month, due by October 31, 2012.

The final installment payment is due by November 30, 2012.  

 

Fall/Winter Property Tax Office Hours
Monday, Wednesday, Friday: 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Tuesday & Thursday: 10 a.m. - 1 p.m.

 

Moon Township Property Tax Office is only permitted to handle the current tax year, per 2009 Moon Area School Board & Moon Township Supervisors resolution.  After December 31, all unpaid Moon Township property taxes will be turned over to the appointed delinquent collector where additional costs will be added to the penalty amount by the collection agency.   

 

The Property Tax Office will be closed in observance of the following 2012 holidays:
* Veterans Day, November 12
* Thanksgiving, November 22 & 23
* Christmas, December 24 - 26

 

Property tax payments can be made in-person or mailed to the Moon Township Property Tax Office at 1700 Beaver Grade Road, Suite 300, Moon Township, PA 15108.  Additional tax information and online payment options are available at www.moontaxoffice.us. Postmarks are accepted.

RMU Presents Moon Township Community Forum Website
Robert Morris University School of Communications and Information Systems is introducing their new Moon Township Community Forum website called "Moon Cloud".  This website results from a grant received from the Knight Foundation. The website will launch in January and will be available to residents at www.mooncloud.com.  The site will be populated by stories prepared by journalism students of the university.  Meetings will be held to outline the purpose of the website and residents will be asked to suggest potential story ideas.  Residents are encouraged to attend one of the upcoming public meetings regarding the site.  RSVP and questions should be addressed to moretti@rmu.edu or call 412-397-6467.  Meetings will be held on the following dates from 7 to 8 p.m.

Home Alone Monitoring

Never feel alone with Moon Township's Police Home Alone Monitoring.  This system automatically telephones a resident once or twice a day depending on their needs. The resident in need will receive this message, "This is the Moon Township Police Department. If you are okay, press 1; if you are not okay, press 2." If the resident presses number 2 or fails to press any number, an emergency contact will be called. 

Any citizen in need may contact the police at 412-262-5000.
