Reflections on the NEON, Inc. Sixth Annual Meeting
Membership Meeting
The 2013 Sixth Annual NEON, Inc. Membership Meeting in Gainesville, FL marked the first annual meeting to be held in the proximity of a NEON site. A small selection of photos from the meeting are available as a slideshow (Flash required on your browser). We have reviewed the feedback, discussed the findings at the senior leadership level within NEON, Inc., and are continuing to iterate on ideas with the NEON, Inc. Board of Directors. While the following summary does not do justice to the full suite of feedback received, we do read every response.

What you liked. Overwhelmingly, participants thought that the (Day 1) visit to the Ordway Biological Field Station was outstanding, and enjoyed the interactions with the NEON field crew. The interactions over the field trip and reception allowed for discussions to happen informally and organically, and this was reflected by a number of individuals. We tried to keep the meeting interactive with less presentations, and that was well received. Many people found the (Day 2) workshops useful and stimulating, and thought that we should continue exploring questions related to scaling.

What you would like changed. Participants reflected a wish for more science talks and for more opportunities to engage with the NEON science staff who designed the field protocols. Although graduate students participated in the field trip, some of you voiced the need to have these same individuals be more involved in the meeting and workshops so that they can be further engaged and their perspectives heard.

Workshop topics for the future. You reflected the need for workshops that incorporated the use of NEON data, including the integration of social science and environmental data. Other suggested workshop themes included: detecting and predicting change from NEON data; population and community ecology; using NEON data for education; and more macrosystems-related topics.  See also "Special Issue of Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment: NSF Macrosystems Biology", below.

Webinars
Webinar
Long Term Observing Management: Funding Models. The fifth webinar of this series will cover the funding models available from a range of agencies, industry, and organizations that support long-term observing. Also included is a discussion about different funding horizons, partnerships, and strategies that influence not only the capability, but the scientific content and longevity of observations. NEON, Inc.'s Brian Wee is one of six panelists invited to participate in the discussion.  The webinar series is organized by NSF's Arctic Observing Network.

Nature's Notebook Webinars. The US National Phenology Network's Nature's Notebook is offering a series of webinars throughout 2014. Topics include: specifics of monitoring using Nature's Notebook, previews of findings as the year progresses, and how to visualize your own data. The first webinar titled "How tracking phenology can benefit your everyday life" will be held on 2014-02-11.
Critical Zone Observatories
NSF has selected sites for four new critical zone observatories (CZOs): the Calhoun CZO in the Piedmont region of South Carolina; the Reynolds Creek CZO in Southwest Idaho; the Eel River CZO in Northern California; and the Intensively Managed Landscapes CZO in Illinois, Iowa and Minnesota. Scientists working at the new observatories, along with six existing NSF CZOs, will study the zone where rock meets life and its response to climate and land use changes. The CZOs add to the environmental sensor networks in place and planned by NSF, including EarthScope, NEON, and the Ocean Observatories Network. (Excerpted and modified from NSF press release.)
Solicitations of Potential Interest to the NEON Community
Please click the respective links to check the original source of information.  The abbreviated text below may not reflect amendments to the original announcements, and may not reflect the original intent of the solicitation.

The "New" icons indicate recent new announcements (includes announcements for regular solicitations), and not necessarily new programs.  These are primarily, though not limited to, NSF solicitations.  Not all new announcements are included in the list below.
  • Icon forCoastal SEES (Science, Engineering and Education for Sustainability)
    • Excerpt: Coastal SEES is focused on the sustainability of coastal systems. Successful proposals will incorporate multiple disciplines to contribute to our understanding of complex dynamics in coastal systems. Concepts that underlie the science of sustainability include complex adaptive systems, emergent behavior, and multi-scale processes, as well as the feedbacks, adaptive capacity, vulnerability, and resilience of coupled human and natural systems. The Coastal SEES Program seeks proposals that create inter/trans-disciplinary research teams to conduct major new integrated coastal systems research. These may include theoretical, field, laboratory and/or modeling activities. Proposal budgets should be in the range of $800,000 - $2 million (maximum) total over a period of 3-5 years.

  • Dimensions of Biodiversity FY2014
    • Excerpt:  The goal of the Dimensions of Biodiversity campaign is to transform, by 2020, how we describe and understand the scope and role of life on Earth. The campaign promotes novel, integrated approaches to identify and understand the evolutionary and ecological significance of biodiversity amidst the changing environment of the present day and in the geologic past. For this year's solicitation, research projects must integrate all three of these dimensions of biodiversity (genetic diversity, taxonomic/phylogenetic diversity, and functional diversity) with the goal of understanding the interactions and feedbacks among these dimensions. For FY2014 the US-China partnership will support research projects, which must address and integrate the three dimensions of biodiversity as described in this solicitation. For FY2014 NSF will continue the partnership with the São Paulo State Research Foundation (FAPESP) of Brazil to facilitate coordinated funding of up to two US-São Paulo Collaborative Research projects.
